The coffee is not great here which problem adds to why I overlook it here, as coffee is always on the top of my list when grabbing some lunch. It's nice place to grab some artisan foods or nibbles for when you have guests coming. They also have a little newsagents thing going on so you can grab a magazine/newspaper. They have a deli, a hot grill option plus there is fresh juices and smoothies available here.

Well like the vast majority of dwellers on this island I was unemployed for the first time in my life several months ago and I never want to return to that part of my life - who does? As a result I came here every Tuesday to get my free money. Folks dressed in their business best claiming, rather sad really. Although it was a tad comical having to walk through this upscale grocery store to claim. Sometimes I messed with their head and bought an over priced tub of cut up fruit and and some pretentious juice. Thank the powers that be I am employed again but I still have found the service in there borderline rude - I don't feel the need to dress up to do my shopping. If you just want to get a few bits and pieces this is the place and again I have only tried this one. I am not opposed to upper end shopping as I am a fan of Listons chiefly due to their tea range.

We stopped to pick up fry materials and a ridiculous amount of freshly baked bread (they have a huge selection!) on our way to pamper Daddy O'Connor for father's day! They also have beautiful cakes and pastries which are equally fresh. We were in and out quite quickly, using the self service tills which are not as useless as they used to be (The phrase 'Unexpected item in bagging area' inspires a murderous rage in me after a few very annoying attempts in Tesco). They even had a rack of complimentary umbrellas so you won't get soaked bringing your shopping out if its raining, lovely :)

You can ask my friends - some of them were lucky enough to be dragged there to witness the greatness that is Nolan's (and I'm not kidding). For many months I stupidly did all my grocery shopping at Super Valu (an oxymoron if I ever heard one), but since chancing upon Nolan's I haven't looked back. This is a family-run supermarket in the posho area of Clontarf. There is one great thing about supermarket shopping in a posh neighbourhood - there is always a plentiful supply of gourmet food. Being quite the foodie myself, I have always been well impressed with Nolan's variety. Just a couple of examples for you... they sell lychee juice here! And mango and papaya and guava.... lychee is hands-down the best though... Their cheese section is extensive and impressive, and not too dearly-priced. They also serve a range of proscuitto, parma ham and salami, which makes Nolan's an ideal stop-off before a picnic on the Clontarf Promenade. The off-licence sells my absolute favourite new Zealand white - the Villa Maria - believe me, this is a lovely drop (as my grandfather would say). They often have this wine on special, and I saw it today for 11 euro (that is cheaper than it sells for in the Pacific, so that's saying something...) Nolan's are currently engaged in 'Store Wars' - check out the pic - logo just like Star Wars (my little brother would be impressed!) Store Wars is Nolan's promise that they will keep their prices equal to or lower than the likes of Tesco and Super Valu so people will patronise thier local independent family grocer over the mean and nasty chain superstores. I have always enjoyed my Nolan's shopping experience, and while the lighting and ambience aren't the best (but hey, it's a supermarket, not an art gallery), at the end of the day it feels good to be contributing (however minimally) to the decline of the Tesco giants. And just a quick piece of advice - you have to get your fruit and veg weighed and priced in the fruit section. If you take it straight to the checkout the checkout chick will have to go off and do it for you (a mistake you won't make twice!!)

Its also the nearest shop to me so therefore its my local supermarket. I would advise anybody who is out in Clontarf to check out Nolans and the Store Wars has certainly meant its great value when it would have had a reputation before as a pricey supermarket. The layout is a combination of convenience and grocery store. Shelves of shelf stable snacks and coolers of drinks plus a hot food station, small meat counter, fresh produce, wine/beer section, coffee counter, and even a deli station. All of the above is in a small footprint, but it is laid out quite nicely. Easy flow and navigable. The space is well kept conditionally and kept very clean. Pricing was a tad higher than the neighboring Tesco, but you are paying for the experience here just as much as the product. Service was friendly and welcoming from entry to exit. Overall, wildly impressed with Donnybrook Fair, and definitely recommend swinging by when in the Stillorgan area!

Mac & Cheese Update: Very very bland, no seasoning and barely any cheese. There's is a crispy coating on top that was interesting and that reminded me of a type of panko bread crumbs. Overall though, it's not your typical Mac and cheese if that's what you're looking for.

I don't know where to start with Fothergills. The cafe is super cute; one side is more of a restaurant scene with tables, menu, and waitresses and waiters on hand. The other side is more of grabbing something quick to eat and/or drink. I've tried the raspberry muffin. It was so fresh and good words cannot even describe it. I'm more of a blueberry muffin person but being that was not an option at the time I chose raspberry and I did not regret it. My fiancé and I also tried the Irish breakfast (I posted a pic and noted what it consisted of). So awesome! A hearty breakfast was a great way to start a day of exploring in Dublin. The next day, I tried the croissant and scone. They pretty much melted in my mouth. As you walk in the cafe, you could smell how fresh everything was. Anyway, we had planned to drive to the Cliffs of Moher that day and decided to get a couple of sandwiches and saw they had a variety of choices to choose from. I ended up creating my own sandwich; it was super delicious! Even when we ate it hours later, it was still good. We tried the Irish cheese and onion chips and it blew my mind. It's similar to the sour cream and onion here in the states but a hundred times better. I found myself looking for more onion and cheese chips during my stay in Ireland. The cafe started open later than other cafes I'm used to but we never made it back in time. With good prices and great food we probably would have eaten breakfast, lunch, and dinner there. I would definitely visit this place again if I ever get the opportunity to return to Dublin. It made our visit a truly remarkable one.

Yes, this is the enemy of the short fat and balding male rapidly reaching middle age, it is Fothergills, a shop filled with everything from a frankly obscene selection of the most appetising pastries known to man - including those squares of short bread covered with caramel and topped with chocolate.... Excuse me... I need a moment alone... Ahem... cakes... they do cakes as well and jam - I took pictures of the jam shelf, just to show you they take this sort of thing seriously... and quite right too.
