Him and his wife had nine children. Take a trip to the Houses and learn more about him and the lives/deaths of others that shaped him. Checked out the ghosts and stories of those people: Abigail Hempstead, Joshua Hempstead III, Owen Coffin, Sarah Bramble, John Stoddard, Zipporah Bolles and children, Sarah Wilton, and Anna Warner Bailey.

The first floor introduces you to Nathan Hale and his teaching here in 1775. Upstairs offers more of a classroom feel, plus a special exhibit on spying in the American Revolution. If you're lucky enough to run into museum guide Debra Dickey, feel free to ask her any question about Hale or the Revolution; she's a real font of knowledge. I didn't encounter any other guides, so can't vouch for them, but the poster displays also provide a great depth of information even in lieu of conversation. The schoolhouse is not in its original location, and indeed has moved to six times since Hale taught here. But it has been lovingly restored for over 115 years, and is entirely supported by donations - so feel free to leave a few dollars in the collection plate when you go. For a small museum, it is well done.

The front entrance on a busy street seems older and more ornant on the outside, and as you go down the parking lot gets more modern and designed for function. It was hard to find the entrance to the parking lot, which is narrow and on the side of the building. You can enter on the bottom floor, which had a friendly guard who told me where the elevator was. The elevator is older and small, but not claustrophobic or scary. You can also take the stairs up. The library is divided between children and adults, and the employees were very friendly. If you have the Connecticut 169 book, they do know what it is!

It's impossible to make an online appointment for a renewal because they don't exist! She refused to help me. Maleeka refused to give me her last name. If she's not doing anything wrong, why refuse to provide your full name? I called a couple of times trying to get her full name. The phone rang and rang without being picked up. When Maleeka answered when I called AGAIN, she started screaming at me and told me she was calling the police...all because I wanted her last name. My son also called, trying to get her name. He asked to speak to the postmaster and was told, "It's me! I'm Maleeka. Who 'dis,?" She refused to give him her last name. Also, she wasn't wearing a uniform or a name tag. Maleeka needs to be fired. A formal complaint has been filed.

Maybe I built it up in my head too much, as I had never even heard of it until a video came up on my fb feed. That said, getting there is a little tricky. There is a guard/checkpoint you have to pass through. The first time I didn't know that and wasn't expecting it and turned around. Today I when I came the checkpoint was unmanned. Apparently if you tell them you're going to enders they'll let you through, but I've heard of people getting turned away.
