I really dig this lovely little gallery, located in one of the coolest middle-of-nowhere towns I've…read moreever stumbled into. I've been to a couple of openings here and had a blast each time. It's about an hour and a half drive north of Seattle, into the beautiful pastoral area of the Skagit River Valley, and well worth that drive for a gallery opening or an artist talk. Smith & Vallee put a lot of emphasis on both paintings and sculpture, particularly from regional artists (and the Skagit Valley area happens to be loaded with great artists, presumably attracted to the great landscapes and light angles, and the arts-friendly communal atmosphere of Bow-Edison). A cozy, intimate gallery + talented local artists + a supportive community = really fun and well-attended gallery openings. It can get pretty packed, which might force you to rubberneck a bit in order to see some of the art, but people are generally kind and relaxed. If it's too crowded for your blood, walk around and check out some of the other neato little shops, restaurants or bars in town and then filter back after a bit. "Town," by the way, is more or less a couple of charming little blocks that look as if you're on the set of a movie.

I am crazy confused. How does this place not get written about by every visitor to Orcas??…read more You've seen the driveway entrance to their place from the main highway. Giant, shiny, reflective, metal spinning imploding-then-exploding undulating spikey flower-like moving sculptures. That may be a clunky way of describing it, but I bet you know what I'm talking about now. Going up [their] long driveway, I felt like I was going to somebody's house for a visit. Yowza, I wish I lived here! Nestled at the end of the road, lies a small house, a small studio for the more delicate sculptures and a large "yard" interspersed with moving metal. I didn't take pictures of the studio's sculptures, and frankly, my iPhone photos really don't capture how magnificent the outside moving sculptures are. These larger pieces adorning the meadow, powered by wind and continued momentum are astounding. Some are free-standing, some attached to trees. All are fascinating to watch--I was nearly hypnotized by some of the more complicated ones. Shiny, shiny. If I had $2K - $10K to spend on these, I totally would. They are stunning. Everybody should have one in their yard. You will love it and tell all your friends about this place after seeing it for yourself! Just gorgeous.

However, once you enter you see the exhibits are a bit more subdued and it isn't as large as it seems from the outside. Still, that shouldn't discourage you from having a good time and getting a big old "VAG" hand stamp on you to experience this art gallery. The exterior of this museum is all Victorian in the scope of its columns and use of concrete materials. It could be a museum perfectly placed in any other Commonwealth country. Entering inside you go through a long hallway with a gift shop at the very end with a good selection of art related and niche items to buy. On one side of the hallway are lockers and restrooms. On the other is a stairway up to their cafe/restaurant as well as the entrance to the actual galleries for the museum. It doesn't feel aged and instead quite modern and efficiently designed. As most museums, there is a rotation of different exhibits and featured artists. During my visit one of the most visually stunning pieces was an atrium area with curving staircases on both sides with a rainbow pattern of waves on the ground. It was a nice visual and interactive piece and definitely one meant for social media. Continuing on I enjoyed seeing lots of interactive art pieces. One was a prompt on the wall where you could put sticky notes on the wall to answer the question. Another similar piece was found but instead of sticky notes you could hang pieces of paper with words or artwork as your response to their prompt. One of my favorite parts of the Vancouver Art Gallery was their offerings of easy to carry foldable chairs. This meant if you really found something you wanted to spend more time on you had a chair to help sit for a while. I wish more museums had this amenity. First Fridays of each month means free admission, though it is first come first serve so you might be waiting a while. But a free admission to this museum felt worth it. However, if you have to pay to come in unless they have a specific piece of art or artist featured that you like it might feel a bit expensive for the price of admission. Either way, museums are a great insight into any city and if you want to experience the creative side of Vancouver, the Vancouver Art Gallery is a good place to visit while exploring the city.

Is that all there is??? (Cue Peggy Lee)…read more I feel strange giving an art museum a 2 star rating, but... I visited VAG last week - it had been over a decade. The admission fee (no senior discount) was $35. Was looking forward to the Emily Carr exhibit (4th floor) - but it was puzzlingly small. I'm aware that VAG has a large collection of Carr's work in their permanent collection - why isn't more of it being shown??? The second floor gallery was off limits - apparently while a new exhibit is created. OK, the first floor had a pottery and a photography exhibit. Where is the permanent exhibit?? The old masters? The Group of Seven?? I was left with a feeling of scarcity. Until the museum is built up I'd suggest lowering the admission fee to something more commensurate with what's being shown. Honestly, it's a stately building with not very much being offered for public viewing. In the meantime, I enjoyed a tasty well-presented appetizer at 1931 Gallery Bistro.

This review is for the PoMo Arts Center, right in the heart of Port Moody (NOT for the entire city…read moreof Port Moody, as the earlier reviewer was somehow under the impression). And the POMOarts Center and organization in general is pretty darn fabulous. I was only recently introduced to PomoArts by an awesome friend of mine who is an artist and recently exhibited some of her artwork here (check out the PoMo "Art4Life" website for info about this awesome exhibition showcasing over 20 artists. The show is on for a month, admission is free, and it's super cool, with a diverse variety of local artists' works in many different mediums). This art organization is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year! The PoMo building here is beautiful, in an old "heritage building", reminiscent of some of the traditional, historic buildings in Fort Langley and elsewhere in the province. And I really liked the whole philosophy behind this arts-focused organization, how they aim to make art available to everyone. In that vein, admission to their art shows are open to the public, and they encourage all to come, to be involved, to participate. They offer a gazillion programs for everyone from toddlers to teenagers to adults of all ages, like a real community center with programs for all. I really like that. If I lived closer, I'd definitely enroll in some of these programs. This building not only has rooms for gallery art shows and classes, but they also have a super gift shop where you can purchase artsy items made by local artists and artisans (see my review for the Blackberry Gift Shop). Port Moody, you are so lucky to have such a fabulous art organization!

HAHAHA you can review the entire city of Port Moody now?!?…read more I grew up in this city for most of my formative years, and of the suburbs in the lower mainland I would say it's the most scenic. The entire city is based around the inlet, which stops at a beautiful and massive park in the center of the city. Most of the services and neighborhoods of this city are also based around this area, and it's the primary outdoor recreational spot here. There's been some huge developments in the central neighborhoods of Port Moody, with new condos springing up constantly. To the north of this neighborhood are the very rich, to the west the very poor. St Johns and the street behind are made up of mom and pop businesses that make up in authenticity what they lack in profit. Except for the pubs, which have always made a killing on college-aged locals. A lot of people I grew up with never left Port moody, instead opting to move several blocks away and keep in touch with their families. I personally thought it was a terrible place to grow up (bored suburban teenager) but would move back in a decade no problem. They really need a renewed focus on "the arts" The fact that I can review this city on Yelp is hilarious! Thanks Bridget S!
