My 4 year old attends evening classes here and I must say the teachers handle them really well. Exercises, technique, discipline everything is very well thought into their bi weekly training. They also had a really well chalked out Halloween party recently. I was expecting kids to only mingle and maybe get bored in sometime but the management had planned a really good 1 and half hour party with games involving attentiveness, creativity and discipline. Newton Black Belt Academy is a great place to learn not only Taekwondo, but also life-skills that are taught there. Going to Taekwondo has greatly helped with my confidence and is great exercise for all ages to stay fit too. I have worked at the academy as an assistant instructor and can attest to the way instructors always try working towards the needs of students, and how instructors constantly are learning as well. For children, there is training and learning technique that can be applied to self-defense, and life-skills such as respect, self-esteem, and discipline are incorporated into classes too. I've been training for several years at the Newton Black Belt Academy, and as an "over 50" adult, I am super happy to be challenged in my fitness and self discipline. Because the academy is part of one of the world's largest martial arts organizations (the ATA), there is also the opportunity to compete at tournaments locally and down in the states. Training at Black Belt Academy makes you feel like part of something bigger, and the comraderie is also a big part of why I train here. If you want to pay for your belt ranks or get stuck in long, expensive contracts, go to this place. If you want to learn any real martial art, don't. That may be all you need to know. If you have time for further details, please read on. Between September 2017 and February 2018, our 3 kids and I were awarded" 3 belt promotions! Starting from white to orange ($65 belt exam), orange to yellow ($65 belt exam), yellow to camouflage ($70 belt exam - $5 price hike - without even telling us!!!) It took 3 belt exams to realize what a scam it was! I didn't want to think that a "martial art academy" could be so dishonest! The owner and the staff seemed so nice - as long as I was willing to pay, I guess. (Our family has since then chucked our 3 very expensive -but absolutely worthless - belts belts that we were "awarded", and started with a real martial art school. We are learning and perfecting real martial skills and techniques. We are literally earning our stripes at our new school - as apposed to just getting our stripes simply for showing up at Newton Black Belt!!! The instructors at Newton Black also rush to give you your stripes if there's a belt exam date approaching. The goal is to get you to pay for that belt exam. They dole out new belts at $70/each when our family left - a price hike if $5 since when we started about half a year earlier! If you pay for your belt exam, you'll get your belt promotion - ready or not, or whether they've taught you anything new since your last belt. The owner and his staff will push you to register for belt exams, which are VERY frequent and NOT free. Belt exams means money from your pockets to theirs! Be wary of their contracts. It's their tactic to hook you in and lock you there. If a school is good and honest, and you're making real progress, (barring unforeseeable life circumstances,) you'd want to stay, right? Why the pressure to sign a contract? ("You should sign this contract to take advantage of our discount" sounds really fishy come to think of it!) SAY NO TO ANY CONTRACTS: DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THEIR "30-DAY MONEY BACK"!!! a 30-day money back SEEMS like a good deal, but this place is really good at its performance! You might not see through their scheme until after maybe 2 belt exams!!! (By then, hopefully you have been lucky enough not to be lured into even MORE expensive and LONGER contracts for one of their "Black Belt Programs". Like I said, why the contract if they are so sure of the quality of their school that you'd stay? Be wary when they pressure you to "upgrade" your "training." They will keep calling you at home, at dinner time or at your kids' bedtime, to "talk" about their "upgrade offer." They may seem nice, and you may feel pressured and obliged to listen, but it's just another way for them to try to reel you in. Be wary when they shower you with compliments about your skills and potential. They will tell you that you "should try a more challenging program." That's another way of their pressuring you into a longer, more expensive contract. Be wary when you sit down and discuss any contract with them. They will write down an exorbitant amount, and then strategically cross it out to replace with a smaller number. The smaller amount is still expensive, but thanks to the psychological trick, it doesn't seem so bad anymore. Lastly, another thing to ponder. Please look on YouTube for a video called "Board Breaking Tips with Sr. Master Karpiuk - September 2017." The owner, aka Sr. Master Karpiuk, is demonstrating a technique on (red-trimmed) kid weight masters. They are light weight and fall over easily, unlike the sturdier adult-size weight masters in the back. It makes one wonder why a "Sr. Master" would choose a kiddy-size weight master to demonstrate on for his video. Because it makes him look strong and powerful. That's why. Pretty neat trick! It sums up the whole school: looks kinda neat, but no real substance. There are plenty real martial art schools in the area. Try out a few and see how you like them. Reputable schools that can keep you through legitimate ways - like keeping you motivated, helping you make real progress - do not use contracts to keep you there! Some food for thought: Would you sign this kind of contracts with your doctor? Your dentist? Your hairstylist? Your counsellor? Your personal coach? A tutor for your child? If the review was just too much to read, I hope you can take away at least this: Get your money's worth by choosing a real school that actually teaches martial art and help you learn. He is great instructor and he was instrumental in helping us to attain the skill level that we needed to be able to open a martial arts academy AND he trained us to our current level of 6th degree Black Belt Masters. Friendly staff, fun classes, and techniques are being taught in a correct manner and those techniques work! 6 months have passed since I have joined this school, and I must say that I have already gained confidence! That is a great characteristic of the staff members - they help you build confidence! Although I have attended classes for 6 months, my confidence was boosted in only 1 month of training! Children will get to break boards in BBC classes and EVERYONE gets to participate! The children will learn new curriculum in BBC classes! I have learned so much here, and I am looking forward to continuing my martial arts journey here at Newton Black Belt Academy! ATA Tigers classes (BBC) are great if your child is 4-5 years old because they constantly learn new curriculum in those classes and they get to break tons of boards (everyone participates). Great program for children of all ages and all fitness levels. The staff are so patient with the children. They will encourage your child. It will definitely build your child's confidence. Rigorous training, clear curriculum, and patient instructors who have kept up their training. During the 3 belt exams I have attended so far, I would say that in the 2 hours, I got a total of about 45 minutes of testing. You aren't waiting for that long because a large group of students will be testing for a while. Great confidence builder, as students are expected to perform the material they learned in 8 weeks in front of everyone. The instructors have very good technique with lots of power and speed - I know this because of that "pop" sound in their uniforms when demonstrating techniques. This is evident in Sr. Master Karpiuk's techniques, as well as all of the other instructors. The instructors will lean towards you being successful in martial arts, thus correcting your technique. They are very observant - they will notice any little mistake! I have learned so much from them because of this. Students will spend about 5 minutes stretching, then the rest of the class is to practice their techniques which include forms, sparring, self-defense, and board-breaking. Students at this school not only learn proper technique, but they also learn discipline, honor, and integrity. Also, be warned - the instructors want you to learn real martial arts here, and they will work you HARD! Sr. Master Karpiuk will push you to your full potential, especially if you are in a more challenging program! (Mr. Wilson and Mr. McCann do this to.) Students participate in a number of exercises that improve fitness, flexibility, and proper technique. It is very effective because you get to practice a number of moves with realistic scenarios (to practice a realistic attack).
