This is a great place to learn about Willa Cather. There's a bookshop that has all her books and…read morerelated books as well. There's also a selection of books for kids and adults about nature and Nebraska. The museum is nicely arrayed with timelines showing Cather's life and what was happening in the world. Quotes from her books and how some of them came about are intermixed with info and pictures about her life. There's a gallery upstairs that I didn't have time to see. Red Cloud has more sites related to Cather and her family. The museum provides a map so you do a self-guided tour. It's definitely worth a stop to learn more about this famous resident.

This has moved to the Red Cloud Opera House down the street. Willa Cather grew up in Red Cloud,…read moreNebraska and used her childhood here as a source of her novels. I took the Willa Cather walking tour in Red Cloud with a high school student. The tour was to her childhood home and around Red Cloud. The town is a little out of the way, but can be combined with a visit to the National Parks Homestead Memorial further South. We did this as a cutoff trip going between two interstates. The tour was really well done and they provided a bit of background on the author. It helps to have read any of the WIlla Cather novels or seen the Oh Pioneers! mini series. My high schooler had not had American Literature yet, and without context for the tour was a little impatient of all the mysterious literary references. But seeing the town on foot with homes and downtown typical of that time was still interesting to a suburbanite without prior exposure midwest small town life.. The Willa Cather tie in is the main reason to visit Red Cloud. Even it you are not a Cather fan, the Pioneer Memorial natural prairie areas outside of town are well worth a stop. Just to see the restored prairie of the pioneers in this part of "fllyover" America is an experience, visualizing it stretching endlessly before you in all directions. We saw it lush and flowering due to previous months heavy rain. The tall and beautiful grasses and wildflowers are wild and untamed compared to the tidy farms that replaced it.
