We started off with the agedashi tofu which I liked very much. The tofu cubes came out golden brown and I loved the consistency of the potato starch that was on the outside. It is served in a hot broth made of dash, miring, and Japanese soy sauce and topped with negi (certain spring onion). Then we had the okonomiyaki which was OK. It had no flair and a basic savory pancake made of flour, water or dash eggs, and shredded cabbage. It is usually topped with fish flakes and can be filled with different meats and noodles but this one didn't have anything else. We had the aburi salmon and aburi scallops. I was NOT impressed by the rice that came with these dishes. They were too hard and didn't compliment the beautiful salmon or scallops as it should have. The dragon roll was OK as well. The shrimp did not have a fresh crunch for me and the eel and avocado were not as flavorful as it could have been. I would suggest adding more eel sauce. You can never go wrong with more eel sauce. We ended with a plate of vegetable tempura which was pretty good. I'm pretty picky about my tempura and think it's necessary to have vegetables that are bursting with flavor and the tempura just enhances them. I am not the biggest fan of tempura capsicum (red and green bell peppers) and prefer pumpkin, eggplant, or sweet potato. The staff were very nice and the restaurant had guests coming in and out all evening. You can also BYO as well. If you're looking for top notch Japanese cuisine, I would not suggest this place but if you're in the area and would like super nice service with decent food in a clean and low key atmosphere, stop in. Overall: 3.5 Service 4 Food 3 Atmosphere 3.5

Upon getting it home I realised that the salmon was discoloured, smelly and slimy. If I had a cat (which I don't) I would have been in two minds as to whether it would have the slippery fish in its bowl. Giving them the benefit of the doubt I rang to tell them and received the advice 'chuck it in the fridge for 20 minutes and take it and it should be fine'........quality advise there. They did not listen to me and completely dismissed me after being a 3 year regular..........good luck Miku.......I will never eat there again

Apparently it gets really crowded at dinner time on the weekends so we had a great experience with it being less busy. The servers were all cheerful, friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is bright and colorful with a strong cartoony Japanese theme. Not a place I'd recommend for an intimate date (it gets loud in there!), but more for a group of fun-loving friends and/or family. We ordered a couple rounds each of chicken, beef and vegetable gyoza. All were tasty, but I personally preferred the chicken gyoza over the rest. Make sure to get your gyoza grilled, not poached! We also ordered some agadashi tofu which - word of advice for anyone with a palate like myself and the rest of my party - comes garnished with "fish flakes" which I found to be pretty atrocious. Next time I'll request it without :-) The chicken teriyaki was just okay, and very different from the teriyaki we have in California. The steamed edamame was fresh. The Kirins were flowing so generously that I lost count (thanks, Uncle Ben!). Also, order sake. Just do it.

Cute! As I wanted to go the Hakataya around the corner, and my partner wanted to get gyoza, this was the compromise. So I ordered the newly added Tonkotsu Ramen ($12). It certainly is not up to the levels I'm used to. But does the job to supplement a tray or two of gyoza. The frozen beer slushie: It's novelty certainly does not outweigh the displeasure of drinking this thing. The ultimate beer crime.

For St Lucia's large student population, the restaurants on Hawkin Drive (affectionately known as…read more"the Ville" by locals) are loved and frequented by many. If you are looking for Japanese cuisine in this area you have two options, Edamame being one of them. While it is not apparently the most authentic Japanese (they play around with some flavours and dishes), it is very well priced and quite delicious. I can recommend their Yakisoba which comes served on a wooden board. I gobbled it up happily. Edamame is BYO wine with a small corkage fee. The place is pretty funky, with assorted chairs and tables. There are old tacky looking paper menus, some of which are torn and stained but this all adds to the atmosphere. This is a pretty good place for a nice dinner out. With a funky atmosphere, good food and good prices, all you will have to bring is the good company.

Once upon a time, I would claim this restaurant served the best ramen in town. In the past two years, so many new ramen restaurants have cropped up (especially within the vicinity of Sunnybank), I don't know if I'd venture all the way to St Lucia for this ramen treat. I suppose if I lived near St Lucia, this would still be my first choice for reasonably price Japanese fare. They have an extensive and complicated menu so usually I skip through all their udon and soba options and go straight to the ramen. Their ramen broth is filled with flavour although I still don't think it is as good as the broth at Hakataya Sunnybank. Keep in mind however that Hakataya only has six options of ramen on their menu while Edamame serves entrees, mains and desserts. In particular, their agadashi tofu is perfect and their unagi (eel with rice) - umami! This is definitely the best Japanese restaurant in St Lucia - I only hope the owners will hurry up and open a branch on the south side of Brisbane.

I guess it's one of the pluses of a sushi train - the turnover of customers of really high, so they get lots eating, and the wait isn't usually too long. I was feeling seafood, so I got the Baby Squid and Salmon Sashimi nigiri and the Softshell Crab, for a total of 14.5, which is I suppose decent for Brisbane. The squid and salmon were good, but I did notice the ornamented salmon plates were cut thinner, which I wanted to try but didn't think was worth it. Some of the nigiris (sushi boat) had different amounts of rice, and weren't that standardized, which bothered me a little, but I guess now I'm being nitpicky. The Softshell Crab was a little overfried and gave me a "fried" aftertaste, but it wasn't bad. I do prefer my crab with ponzu sauce rather than the one they provided, but no biggie. Overall, Sushi Train is a-ok, with the attentive waitresses making the experience better, but it wasn't as cheap as I had expected [expectations prompted by Urbanspoon]. There's really not much to complain about though!

Sure there are other sushi bars out there, but in my opinion, the model of the 'Sushi Train Franchise' is the best one yet. They all seem to be owned by Japanese people... not Taiwanese, Hong Kong, Malaysian or Thai... (I'm yet to see an Indian sushi bar owner). Which in my experience makes it that much more authentic tasting. The one at Indooroopilly have $3 plates all day on certain days like their birthdays and other special occassions and it does tend to get really busy in there. The food is very fresh, I personally like their Agedashi Tofu additions and Chicken Karaage as well as the ever so popular Tuna Salad Boat and Chicken and Avocado sushi's. This franchise is really clean, it's really efficient and your food is always cooked the way you like it. It's funny how you can't really stuff up a good fried chicken (chicken karaage) but so many other places tend to... stuff it up. I like the fact the train doesn't break down and I love the fact they are so friendly and always willing to help you out. Definetely try this place out, if not for the sushi, for the noodle soups, or gyoza or other yummy things you can order straight from the menu. This is the same franchise that owns Top Noodle so if you have a VIP card, you get 1 point for every $10 you spend.. great discount because you can get discounts off your food quickly if you're a frequent customer like myself.
