Buried behind the Broad Street Mall, but right in front of the Hexagon Theatre, Thai9 fuses Thai and Japanese, with the first all-you-can-eat buffet I've seen since arriving in Berkshire. If you stick to the buffet, it's only £5.80, but they also have an ayce made-to-order sushi for £13.60. The buffet has a few hits and a few misses. I'd recommend avoiding anything in the bright red and sickly-sweet sauce. Other options include a stir-fry noodles, pad thai with chicken, chicken in black bean sauce, sesame toasts, spring rolls and several different vegetable plates. All of those were quite good. Two small plates of sushi were rather bland. As is the usual case with UK restaurants, drinks are not refillable. It's a shame to pay £1.20 for a can of Diet Coke, even if they do serve it in a glass with ice and a slice of lemon. A decent meal, well worth the cost. I would return. read more

My expectation was already low, I have been before at their other branches in London. But this experience was not good at all. The venue's location is quite handy, centralise and convenient. The decoration wasnt too bad, not so glam, but what do you expect from a sushi restaurant which offers cut prices buffet. At this point, my rating would have still been a three star. Then the food and service came. Service for me could be better, waitress seemed they did not want to be there, I can tell, they were waiting for their shift to end, and thank god it did, the next waitress was slightly better, but needed more training. Did not understand what we wanted to order, or suggest how we should order. It was fairly quiet also, which is why I wondered why it took so long for my green tea to arrive, and to pay for the bill. The food was crap, I said it. Although it was a buffet, I could not eat after the first order. as soon I picked up a piece of sushi, the whole thing just crumbled, not sticky enough. I was disappointed in the presentation, looked nothing like the pictures they advertised. I have made sushi rolls before, not difficult, I am not the greatest cook, but I believe I have made better. Went here whilst visting a friend who now lives in Reading. It was about 6pm whn we visited for an ealy dinner. We opted for the £15.80 all you can eat option. You have a list of dishes on a small paper menu and you can select up to 6 dishes per table. As there was just 2 of us that was more than enough. We chose our 6 and went for it. The beauty of this all you can eat option is thst it allows you to try different things that you might not try otherwise. We went for a mixture tempura, sushi and satay dishes. Food was freshly cooked and arrived quickly sushi was tasty and the tempura was light. We ordered our next 6 dishes and tried some of the salads and tofu dishes. There was plenty of food we left feeling full. Arrived here at 6.15 on a Thursday afternoon. It's my first time & im looking forward to trying a new restaurant. It's pretty warm inside, but it's also warm outside & most places like this dont have AC. There are only 2 other couples dining & I can pick any table I'd like. I'm waiting on a friend to join me, fast forward 15 minutes & the waiter has just asked for my drink order. Service so far seems lacking, if it were busy I'd understand but they're empty. Let's see how the rest of the meal goes. We opted for the all you can eat sushi which sounded pretty awesome. The garlic fried rice was delicious. The sushi didn't seem very cold but I just overlooked that. The service improved, but only slightly. It still look 5+ min to get drinks & next round of sushi. Since it was my first time I would have appreciated an explanation on how the "all you can eat" from a server as it wasn't clear. Thankfully my friend had eaten there before. In full disclosure, after eating at Sushimania both my fiancé & I suffered from salmonella food poisoning. He joined us at the end of the meal & nibbled on our leftovers. Place is terrible. From the moment you walk in you are part of an elaborate price scam. You can only select from certain menu items at certain hours when the moon is in the fourth position. In other words, you aren't getting out of there with any kind of deal.... Don't be fooled. Maybe in service of this and selling you overpriced drinks, the sushi is all incredibly salty and dry. The rice gave me cottonmouth. No ginger or wasabi on the plate. It's 2015 Reading. No excuse for sushi this wack. The fascist manager is there to police your price options, not ensure you have a good meal. This place is good value for money. You can definitely eat until you are stuffed. The food isn't the very best, but then again you are eating a buffet. The Japanese Sushi was definitely very reasonable and actually had quite a good selection of fish. The only thing that's a bit weird is the ordering system which only allows you to have 6 items at a time. It does work for cutting down wastage though. It's by the Hexagon which does mean you have to deliberately go there and there is not much through traffic. All in all worth the visit. read more

This is my favourite Japanese/Thai food restaurant in Reading. It's well worth going here instead of YoSushi if you want a fix of sushi since for 14 pounds you can get a lot more for your money with the buffet. However, sashimi and green tea and desserts are not on the buffet menu so you have to pay extra for them. But I don't think you will miss it too much if you decide not to get any since all the sushi and nigiri are delicious. As for the Thai food, I recommend the Tom Yum soup. It's the best I have tasted so far in the UK. It is a modernised version of the soup with mushrooms and has a generous amount of spice with fresh herbs! A great feature of the place is that for almost all the main dishes you can choose to have chicken, beef, prawn or vegetable so it's great for vegetarians. The green curry is really good as well and I also recommend the seafood glass noodle dish! Yum yum. Can't wait to visit again! read more

I ordered Thai 9 delivered and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. I ordered their special flat noodles and a green curry with beef. The noodles had abundant seafood and the noodles did not stick, and the beef in the curry was moist and tender. I will definitely come here again! read more

If you are debating between going to Yo! Sushi or this restaurant, go here. The sushi is made to order, the list is extensive, and the place is so busy that you don't have to worry about the freshness. This place gets packed very quickly, so go early if you don't want to wait. If you are hungry, I highly recommend the all you can eat option since sushi gets pricy very quickly. You have two hours to consume as much fish, rice, and seaweed as possible. The California Rolls are a bit strange for this Californian, yet still very tasty. The restaurant also offers Thai cuisine, which is offered alongside the sushi in the all you can eat option. read more

We booked a table ahead of time. When we walked in the door we stood there for several minutes and then had to go to the bar to get anyone to take any notice of us. The restaurant was empty. When we sat down, we sat there for a good 10 minutes, still without anyone serving us. In the end we just left. The manager's poor excuse was that his waiting staff were new. I have hardly any words to describe Sushimania Reading. I come here AT LEAST twice a month as the managers and workers there are all so kind, hard-working and welcoming. The food is always fresh and perfectly cooked, rolled and served. Unlike many restaurants, it feels like the food is actually made with some pride and love rather than just being chucked on a plate or in a take away box. The restaurant is always clean and the toilets are immaculate. I won't go into too much detail but I had a car accident one day while on my way to collect my food. I had already paid for it and was just going to call them after I got home to say if I could pick it up later or transfer it to another day. I got a call from the manager when I got home and not only did he ask if I was okay but offered me a solution. That simple 5 minutes they took out of their busy shift to help me, lifted my mood. To think that strangers who see me a few times every month would recognise me by name and face and call to make sure I was okay... is unbelievable. This restaurant goes above and beyond with everything I do and I really hope one day they are sincerely recognised for it. read more

Some items are at a supplement if you go for the buffet, but still plenty to choose from, including fresh tasting salmon sashimi and usually pricey grill eel Compared to best sushi out there, I would give it 3 stars. Went to the Thai 9 in Queens Walk, opposite the Hexagon, in Reading last night 15th January 2011. One of the worst Thai food I have ever had. Overpriced and overrated. We had booked a table for 7.45pm. Got there at 7.35pm. Were asked to wait. Couple came a few minutes after us. They said they had no reservations and they got seated immediately!!!! We got seated at 8pm. Order taken 10 minutes later. Starters arrived at 8.50pm. Main meal arrived at 9.45pm. We had ribs, chicken wings, vegegable tempura and spicy thai fish cakes for starters. The food was bland tastless and most of it was left. We told the waiter we would like the main to be spicer as we found the starters too tasteless. He said they couldn't do it. Why not, it's supposed to be freshly prepeared Thai food. Surely they must have chilli, lemon grass, lime etc avaialble. Thought the main would be better we had Chicken curry - no flavour whatsoever. Might as well had had chicken soup. Fried fish in chilli - got deep fried salmon with stone cold gloop thrown over it. It was disgusting. Just left it. Egg fried rice which was Ok and Rice noodles where the only hint of flavour was of soy sauce. Bill came to £40 including10% Service Charge which is automatically added to the bill. I was going to deduct it as service was Zero, but thought it would seem mean so didn't. With hindsight we should have left when they chose to sit the other couple first. That should have warned us. Would I go here again? Never. All they are interested is in quantity, not quality Have I told others how bad the restaurant is? You bet. read more

Too costly and poor value. I went because the name "Sushi" was used in the name. I have a firm rule that the words "sushi" and "all you can eat" c an never be used together. My wife and I were craving sushi though and hadn't had any since moving to the UK, so we gave it a try. I was right, not good at all. Despite being lower than average, their prices were still on par with a high quality sushi restaurant. The sushi was tough, the seaweed used was old and tough as well, the fish was fishy tasting and the soft shell crab was both fishy smelling and tough. I've had high quality sushi all over the world and this place was a long way from that level of sushi. However, our bill, no drinks and all sushi, came to £86. That's what you would pay in a nice place, but in this place, for just my wife and I, that was way too much. They are gouging for the food and not spending the money they make on good quality sushi fish. The service was bad too, as was the ambiance and the bathrooms. All the reviews I've read say similar things. The people who are talking about "good value" at off a restricted "all you can eat" menu, which I didn't want to eat from. You'll notice all the people who say the food is good, they are all talking about dishes other than sushi. If you want good sushi, this isn't the place to go. read more

We tried this place and weren't too impressed unfortunately. The price for all you can eat would be reasonable if the quality of food was good but it wasn't. We had Satay for starters and I kid you not, it was like turkey twizzlers on a stick! The main courses were better but nothing particularly special.
