The staff seem friendly enough, but the atmosphere isn't quite what it was, with just the wrong sort of juke-box music in the background (to me, rock and historic pubs just don't gel). There are now regular gigs by live bands and other acts. Hopefully, it'll get back on its feet now that it has new landlords. I would recommend the roasts and a good way to feel like you have got out of Brighton and done something worthwhile with a Sunday. A great, slightly quirky, traditional pub in a great Sussex village…read more You won't find Chiddingly by accident - it's off a narrow lane off the A22, between Lewes and Eastbourne. The village itself dates back to Domesday and has a fine mediaeval church (worth a visit while there). In fact, the village has 55 entries in the listed building guide, so there's more than enough history to occupy the most hardened tourist before retiring to the pub for refreshment. The pub building dates back to 1774 (and possibly earlier) and is a Grade II listed building; the frontage of blue and red bricks looks suitably traditional, and through the front door there is a main bar area to the left and a wonderful snug room (with a huge fireplace) to the right. The interior is all wooden beams and stone floors, with a bar serving a good selection of real ales and generous portions of traditional pub grub, all with friendly bar staff. (NB The food is popular, so be prepared to wait at busy periods). Towards the rear of the pub, the walls are festooned with old pictures and photographs, and a motorcycling theme predominates: it is a well-known meeting place for bikers, and there's a club board by the back door giving details of events, runs, etc. Outside is a large garden, with lots of seating. The rear of the pub is decorated with old enamel advertising signs, covering every subject imaginable. Also at the back is the large, surfaced car park - perfect for rows of shiny (or, in my case, not so shiny) motorbikes. If all that wasn't enough, the pub also host a fortnightly folk and blues club (http://www.6bellsfolk.co.uk ) as well as its biker meets. Oh, and on my last visit, my mate and I (on our bikes) opted for 2 pints of soda and lime to quench our thirst, with a couple of packets of crisps. It came to £1.80. The menu is very extensive, so much so that it's almost impossible to choose a dish. There are loads of veggie options as well, so useful if you're not a meat fan. I went for the lamb tangine but unfortunately they had run out, so I plumped for the roasted pepper and spinach risotto with stinging nettle pesto instead. A tasty dish, served with a couple of crispy goats cheese balls - ideally there would have been more of these but the flavour combinations were good and I was especially impressed with the pesto. Pretty much all of the main courses were less than a tenner as well so perfect for those on a budget. For pudding I went for the Banoffee Pie. Tasty, but I have to say it mainly consisted of cream, the other ingredients were a bit lacking. There are plenty of bar staff so getting served isn't an issue. No table service, order at the bar. Overall, a great atmosphere, good food with loads of choice, and all pretty good value.

The food here - especially the steaks are excellent. Try a glass of the house red with a nice rare Sirloin and you won't be disappointed. They have live jazz every Wednesday night too, a lot less hectic than a night out in Brighton so worth a trip once in a while but I think lunchtime is the best here.

ain't nothing but a late night out in soho…read more... ain't nothing but a side street that also houses dishoom, clearly a distraction for anyone hungry. ain't nothing but an overflowing crowd being told outdoors drinking ceases after 10pm? ain't nothing but a one in, one out queuing system, so just stand patiently in line for entry. ain't nothing but relief from the outdoors elements in exchange for a sardines packed indoors on a monday night because there's no cover charge? ain't nothing but jostling for precious real estate as you inch yourself towards the bar to quench your thirst. ain't nothing but cashless transactions, even a cashless tipping machine, just tap and go! ain't nothing but a beer in one hand and a cup of nuts in the other, still inching ever so slowly towards the stage. ain't nothing but non stop live music and a boisterous appreciative crowd making room to groove along. ain't nothing but a long wait to poach one of a handful of tables to sit and soak in the ambience, freeing up your hands to clap! ain't nothing but enthusiastic jamming sets right up till 12.45am. ain't nothing but a good late night out in soho!

The breweries represented regularly here include Archers, Dark Star, Squirrel, Weltons, Custom, Cottage, Oakham, Grand Union, Hog's Back, Hepworths, Kings, Hampshire and Northumberland. There's a choice of real ciders too, and a limited range of bar food (pasties, pies and the like from a local butcher). Fundamentally it is still a music venue though, downstairs is quaintly cosy so not much room for dancing, but it gives a nice Greenwich Village cafe vibe. There's a really nice wall feature of a 3-D rooftop scene and little star lights cover the rest of the walls downstairs, apparently the original scenery from CATS the musical. The light and airy upstairs is used as a restaurant/bar where food is served Thur - Sat 6pm til 10pm & Sun 12pm til 3.30pm & has free wi-fi. Unusually for Brighton the downstairs is closed on Friday & Saturday nights and available for hire. Definitely worth checking out if your at a loose end on a weekday evening.

Serving average quality food and a reasonable selection of drinks the upstairs bar is always a nice place to be. However, the real draw is the cabaret bar downstairs. Having previously hosted such names as Amy Winehouse, The Kooks, Herbie Flowers and Chris Difford, the downstairs bar is definitely where it's at. The walls have been made to look like a charming cityscape complete with real, backlit windows and twinkling stars. This combined with the low ceiling and slightly raised stage makes the venue an intimate place, better suited to bands that are comfortable dealing with much audience participation. Drinks are a little expensive but definitely worth it. The simple pleasure of watching great music in a genuinely charming setting is enough for me to just shut up and pay. Great for folk, blues, jazz or anything rootsy. One of my favorite gig venues!

The inside is so cosy that on a really busy night - when there's clusters of people standing - you usually end up with someone's elbow or handbag in your face. Luckily, the atmosphere is so friendly and laidback nobody seems to notice or care! There's a cluster of seats outside and a ramshackle assortment of wooden tables and chairs inside. Gig posters decorate the hallways and toilets and there's live jazz and acoustic bands most weeks. The rest of the time, the music depends on which bar staff are working. Most of the time they seem to rotate classic rock, indie and hip hop but I was once subjected to an hour of speed metal. I would have left but it was torrential rain outside. If they'd played The Supremes or Amy Winehouse instead, they'd probably have an extra star. :-)

A mass of blue fairy lights cover the stark white ceiling, and the effect this creates (especially after a few vodkas!) can be slightly disorienting, in a good way. Outside, like its neighbours, the place has some outside seating, which in summer is a great people watching spot. Its proximity to the Dome and to the Theatre Royal means that this is also a great choice for a pre-show drink.
