For a tiny place, we were here a while because there's a lot to choose from. Counter service was courteous and prices aren't anything to complain about either. The last decade when going back I've never found good ones in a pick n mix or in the bags at the grocery stores, I was only able to find cheaper versions and then I stumbled across Hardy's in London! Wow they have the most delicious Bon Bon's in every flavor you can possibly think of! I needed them to last a while so I bought a pre mixed bag for around 3 pound that had toffee, apple, blue berry, vimto, lemon, strawberry...you name the flavor and they had it! The other cool thing about this shop for UK residents is that they have all the "American" candy along with Flips pretzels, peanut butter, marshmallow fluff and other goodies. To me I obviously have this stuff everyday but my local friend was just as excited about the American candy and treats as I was with the bon bon's, we definitely walked out with a sugar high!

But inside this shop is an experience all its own. Those of us well into our adult years will still get that proverbial "kid in a candy store" sense when walking into a place like this. The immediate reaction is "I'll take one of everything". The number of choices and sheer number of chocolates displayed in a confined space are both exhilarating and overwhelming at the same time. It was clear from the choices that this was a true artisan shop. In an act of fiscal and dietary restraint, we took away a half-dozen pieces. My wife always compares chocolatiers using their Chocolate Orange Peels (Chocolate Orangettes is what they called them at this place) as a benchmark. This place passed with flying colors. They also offered an intriguing Mango-infused Dark Chocolate with a pipet of Mango compote that you could inject before eating. It was also a highlight. The prices are fair for what this place is and the service is friendly, polite and efficient. If you are meandering up and down Brick Lane, this establishment is worth a stop. If you are a Chocolate fan, then this place is a must-stop. I guess there are people out there who are not chocolate lovers (or at least likers), but that is like not being a fan of oxygen from my perspective. I would like to stop again sometime to try one of the chocolate drinks. We opted to not get one this time on top of the candy pieces we bought to avoid the sugar overload. But they looked amazing from what I saw of others who did indulge.

No, I decided I'd abandon the Time-Out guided Sunday masses and wonder the wrong way down Brick Lane in search of authentic options. And because of that my lunch for £2.40 consisted of two of the best spinach samosas I've ever had and two hearty but dry fish cakes. It was window placement of these savoury cakes, samosas and pakoras that magnetised me into Ambala. The rest of the shop was largely devoid of the Bangla sweets they profess, but do I look like I'm bothered? It was lunch time, I wanted something salty, satisfying and solid value and I found it in spades. Next time you do the sunday brick lane thing, give Ambala a look. When I find out who came up with the idea I shall demand that they are promoted and given some sort of employee of the decade award. Ambala sell a vast range of Indian/Pakistani savoury snacks and sweets. Both their lamb and vegetarian samosas are fantastic, their pakora is great and so is more or less everything else they sell. If you work near this part of London you absolutely have to go in here and buy enough of their delicacies to fill a wheelbarrow, push it straight back to your office and bask in the warm adulation of your co-workers as they scarf hot eastern yumminess. Unfortunately they aren't open early otherwise I would pick up breakfast here.

There are a lot of great stands to visit, selling the most amazing produce, ingredients and ready to eat food In amongst all the varied stands, Sow Gourmet may well be the most unique stall in the market. Thom Harvey, the owner, may well have caught the mood of current food trends. I had joked recently that despite my many cooking gadgets, I'm still missing a vital gadget which I've seen in many fine dining kitchens this year - a pair of tweezers to precisely place microherbs and edible flowers on dishes Sow Gourmet offers you the chance to grow your own microherbs at home. They sell little kits comprising all the components necessary to make a little mini greenhouse to sit on your windowsill. Wet the litlte growing pad and sprinkle on the seeds. Within 7-10 days, the microherbs will be ready to eat. Perfect for people with limited garden space or for foodies looking for something new to experiment with Thom has a variety of his herbs available for you to try and they really do pack a punch of flavour. My favourite, which I've used in dishes is mustard leaf frilly, which initially tastes like baked potato (yes, really!) and finishes with a strong peppery kick. Fortunately, my cooking obsession hasn't yet led to me buying a pair of tweezers! You can buy replacement growing pads and seeds on-line from their website. With whole growing kits (including your first packet of seeds) costing only £5, this would make a nice little stocking gift for any foodies that you know!

The modest booth displayed a variety of "micro-herbs" which are actually the very things you can find in your soups, salads and gourmet dishes in high end restaurants, but that you can grow yourself! This sparked our interested and we stuck around to find that it was extremely easy to grow your own mini gourmet garden. for a £5, you get a nice little container with a bedding sheet and a packet of seeds of your choice. You wet the bedding and spread the seeds around and in a few days you have micro herbs. It doesn't get simpler than that. You can even order seed packet refills online with free delivery! One particular variety I loved was a micro herb which tasted like potato chips, but ended with a bang of wasabi / mustard seed. I know this seems crazy, which I thought as well, but it's actually true! I tasted it at the booth and was able to try it again at home when I grew my packet. Amazing!
