I didn't catch the name of the wonderful woman who checked me in, but she was so warm and genuinely kind. A special thank you to Corey, who was at the desk before entering the testing room. He was incredibly friendly, patient, and reassuring. Taking an exam is already so nerve-racking, and it's easy to arrive feeling anxious. The kindness and positive attitude of the staff really helped put me at ease before walking into that inevitable testing room. It made a much bigger difference than you probably realize. Thank you, Corey, and the entire team, for creating such a welcoming environment and for treating every test taker with compassion and respect. Your professionalism and kindness did not go unnoticed, and I'm truly grateful. Keep up the amazing work!

The facility is modern, testing room has good temperature control. Conveniently located bathrooms right across the hall. There's also a MIXT right next door for a mid-test refuel! There are two testing rooms. A small one with about 8-10 testing stations and a large one with 16-20. And then one small testing room for people with accommodations.

In addition to language classes, some things that happen here are dance and music performances, movies, dinners, end-of-semester skits, traditional seasonal celebrations (Chuseok, Seollal / Seolnal), and just celebrations in general. The seasonal open houses are cool because different rooms are set up with ongoing activities such as calligraphy, food & drink, coloring, traditional board games, crafts, getting your photo taken wearing a hanbok, and more. Exploring the rooms will have you moving up and down among the floors of the house. So if you're here with family or a group, you might want to bring your cell phones to more easily figure out where each person is. In any case, once the food breaks out, sooner or later everyone can be found downstairs.

The instructor is very attentive to each student's abilities and to the flow of the class. For a once a week, 3-hour class, the cost is only $420 including the cost of the textbooks. That's a big draw-in! The only rough patch is that different instructors teach different classes, and they may vary from semester-to-semester. So you may end up with an instructor less motivated. But at this price, it's worth the gamble. I really enjoy the class, and the classmates too. It's a fun, easygoing atmosphere. So far, the class has been going on for several weeks, and no one has opted out! Instead, people show up early to get some cramming done!

I've taken a class taught by James Sansing at Fort Mason time after time over the years, Art &…read moreAssemblage Workshop: the Re-Contextualizing of Objects. I wouldn't return if it wasn't any good. Assemblage (say it with a French accent to impress your friends) is, simply put, an art form where found objects, everyday articles and whatever you got are glued or screwed together to make freestanding sculptures or wall hangings. James' class is very low key and freeform. It's actually more of a guided workshop than a structured class. James brings in huge bins of junk, debris and discarded materials which might consist of doll heads, driftwood, electric appliance parts, photographs, toys, old telephones and what-the-heck-are-these-things. James supplies tools and glues. Many students bring materials from home. Then the students take the materials and put them together to complete their own masterpieces. There's a lot of "networking" that goes on between the students. It's fun to go around to the different work tables to see what the others are doing, and many times we offer suggestions or take advice from each other. I've stolen some of my best ideas from other students. James is very low key and non-judgemental but he has a subtle way of guidance that is always helpful and inspiring. He is a master of tools and adhesives, and he is a great problem solver when it comes to assembling art where a student is unable to figure out how to put something together or needs another eye to see what works best in the way of balance, color, etc. Besides being knowledgeable in the utilitarian side of things, James is an accomplished artist with a very strong vision of his own that is not forced on anyone else. On top of that he's a very likeable man. If you are looking for a very structured class with a teacher who has a definite agenda and a syllabus, I wouldn't recommend this class. If you're looking for a class that is freeform but has a steady mentor who is there if he is needed but is savvy enough to know when to stand back and let your creativity flow, then this is the one for you.

CCSF Fort Mason campus has changed my life... even that is an understatement…read more I first found out there was an art campus at Fort Mason from getting a CCSF flyer in the mail. Months later, I went to their annual holiday sale to see just what kind of art was being made there. The depth and variety is amazing to me given how, all things considered, the building is kind of small. City College only takes up two floors of building B. Painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture... it's all there. I'm one of those people that resorts to drawing symbols of stick figures when asked to draw a human. Now that I've been taking classes here, I can actually draw a person to their likeness. One of the best things about the Fort Mason campus is the incredible diversity it attracts in students. Obviously there is a lot of ethnic diversity, but it's the age diversity that is such a joy. I've literally had classmates ranging from 18 to 94. The range of ages adds so much to the classroom's energy. Everyone is there because they want to be there and they're all at different stages in their life. All this life experience elevates the work and it's inspiring for everyone working there. The teachers are great too. They make it such a pleasant, encouraging, and supportive environment. I was kind of intimidated when I took my first class. I had flashbacks to grade school and was worried I'd be the only one that didn't already know how to draw at least a little bit. My worry was for nothing. If you are thinking about taking a class here, do it!

My experience at Stratford has been nothing short of exceptional! Ms. Rachel and the entire administration are impressive --- well-run school, great communication with parents (never had an email I had to follow-up on), thoughtful answers to tough questions, robust education, exciting and fun events that are inclusive and bring together the community. Our teachers, Ms. Irene and Ms. Irina, make the experience. They truly love our children and are invested in their success, which I feel would translate across schools, whether your child rides out their entire education with Stratford (post elem/middle) or transfers elsewhere. As an example, my daughter used to cry at drop off transitioning to a new school (for months) and also when having to perform in front of strangers. It took a week for her say she loved her teachers and not cry. The teachers and PE coach worked out different approaches to build her confidence and spirit, and over time, she cried less and less at spirit day performances until she actually started looking forward to it! Outside of this, the school does a great job of supporting two working parents. Personally, I know it can be difficult to navigate the guilt that comes from motherhood and working; wanting to be involved, but also balancing high-pressure jobs, and trying not to burn out. They know it, they plan for it, they communicate things in advance. This enables parents to be involved for enjoyment rather than obligation, which actually makes me want to be more involved. We feel so lucky to be part of this wonderful community! Highly recommend for any family looking for the right balance of a high-quality education that translates to any future, and teachers/staff that are loving, patient, and invested in the growth and happiness of your child.

I have been having issues for months with the master Excel file crashing, freezing and not updating correctly all data. I found David on yelp and contacted him for a consultation. He stopped by my office this past week and we looked together through my system. He was immediately able to identify the potential causes by looking through my files and gave me a few suggestions on how to solve the problems. Today I have updated to the latest Microsoft Office for Mac suite, I have updated some of the spreadsheets that were evidently the ones causing the system to crash due to bad external links and references. The whole system is not working smoothly; I have restarted the master file several times during the day and it hasn't crashed ones but it's actually quite faster then before. Thank you David!

We liked that sylvan provided free testing up front but now realized that's just the sales tactic. I didn't like that they set up an hour to review test results and really it's to sell us their tutoring service. First 3 weeks she had three different tutors. For $70+ an hour of shared tutoring, this was not a good start. The tutor they wanted to keep her with, my daughter didn't like and said he just asked us to review the book (the one that is $12 from Amazon) and reviewed her practice test results she said he didn't teach much and she wasn't learning anything except what she reads in the book. I complained to Ken situ the sylvan manager and he gave us a different tutor which seemed a bit better. We took the test again on our own as a test run right after all these weeks of tutoring. And she scored maybe 1 more answer right in some of the section. The worst was she showed up to hspt actual test and was surprised that there was a written portion following the hspt test. For the 10 weeks she got tutoring, no one at sylvan mentioned this. When I followed up with Ken about this, he said he agreed that "families should be made aware of the written test in advance." So we spent $700+ for basically no actual help.
