Great school to learn Dutch and Korean. The class is small-sized and teachers are really good!

I went to Club Mac so I am used to learning languages in asbestos filled buildings of yesteryear…read more That is why I feel right at home at the French Centre in Porter House. Finally addressing those New Year's resolutions (fly a plane, shoot a gun, learn French) I started the Beginner 1 course a few weeks ago. I thought dragging myself to class after work on a Tuesday would get old pretty quickly but I genuinely look forward to these classes, made all the more fun by Giancomo, the Italian born Linguist and French teacher with the maniacal laugh that always lasts one round too long for you to keep it together yourself. The classes are the perfect pace for people in full time work, easy and repetitive enough to retain with a minimum of home revision. The cost was about $230 for an eight week course. Much cheaper than Alliance Francais but less class hours and probably less intensive. It's week three and we have just learned to order coffee. The classes are mainly oral/aural based learning. They give you course notes but in Giancomo's words "only because you expect us to give them to you". This style of learning is great for me and I think it's the way we naturally learn language (babies can't write, right?) but there are a couple of visual learners in the class and I can see that they would benefit from being allowed to write things down more. If you're looking to undo the misguided belief of the NSW pre-2000 school curriculum that languages weren't that important because we're an insular bunch of rednecks, I'd recommend French Centre. The same people run Italia500 if you like your languages even fruitier. Learning a language makes your brain bigger and who doesn't need a bigger brain?

I have loved my weekly classes at the french cultural and language centre…read more A small group of strangers have slowly become friends over the past eight weeks as we struggle to conjugate verbs and giggle at pronunciation. Our teacher has been brilliant - knowing when to laugh at your pronunciation and when to gently correct you. I would highly recommend anyone attending this centre to learn a second language to travel or just to have a laugh and test that brain power!
