1) When I was looking for a tutor for my 2nd and 3rd grade boys, I was loathe to engage a tutoring company who misspells their name to be cute. Please, tutors, you are teaching reading, spelling and math...spell check your company, first. Then I may trust you to teach my kids to spell. 2) We ended up going to Sylvan in Brighton. Christine and Adam have been tutoring the 2nd grader for almost 3 years for reading, writing and math. In the middle of 2nd grade, he was reading and writing above grade level. I thought we could quit Sylvan...20-20 hindsight...BIG MISTAKE! We had failed 4 subjects in 4th grade. 3rd grade...Adam said if he were in public school, he would have had a early intervention and a computer to help him with writing (He has very hard to read handwriting, and it takes him forever to write.) At the end of 3rd grade, I asked the school if he could bring a laptop from home. They said we should wait until the beginning of 4th grade and see what the teacher thinks. Well...it's the beginning of 4th grade, we had a meeting with his teacher and support team, and he MAY get to use a computer this year ;) I think, if he can use a computer, he MAY GET HONOR ROLL by the final grade period!! My son has been going to Sylvan for almost a year to work on improving his reading skills and I cannot think of a better place than Sylvan. Their teachers have a lot of compassion to teach students the skills they need to be a successful learner in school and some. My son has increased his reading level within a short period of time and enjoys going twice a week. I'm grateful for all of the help and support their teachers and administrators have given to my son and family.
