The Goddard School is not simply a time for play--it is a foundational academic daycare that supports essential cognitive, social, and emotional development. Educators in this space should have specialized training in early childhood development, instructional strategies for young learners, and knowledge of age-appropriate curriculum standards. A degree in Linguistics, while valuable, does not provide the pedagogical framework or developmental understanding required to teach effectively at this level. This situation raises concerns about the standards being upheld in early learning environments. Recognizing someone as "Teacher of the Year" who lacks a degree in Early Childhood Education not only undermines the value of that credential but also sends the message that passion alone qualifies one to lead a classroom. Passion is important--but it must be paired with relevant, formal education to ensure children receive the quality instruction they deserve.

It took me almost a year to build up the courage to send him and in the summer of 2021 he started at Goddard. Now it's the summer of 2022 and both of our children attend Goddard. Our son is a little timid in large groups and likes to play independently, in each class his "style" has been respected. We get regular updates on his days and when a little extra attention is needed from us, his teachers have been gracious enough to help us reinforce positive behaviors at home. He loves his school and his teachers, every day he has a "great day" (his words). Navigating school and childcare in the post-pandemic has not been easy but we are always thankful and appreciative of the communication and cautiousness that Goddard places on the safety of the students and teachers. They both missed out on their kindergarten year due to Covid and unfortunately were very behind. I was able to see a HUGE improvement in just a few short months. Now 2 years later my children are excelling in their reading! So much so that I decided to now enroll my youngest who is soon to be entering Kindergarten. In just one month I have seen her growth. She is reading small books and her handwriting has also improved tremendously! I can not say enough good things about Harbour View Kumon Center. I recommend it all the time to everyone I know. DISCLAIMER - this is based on my personal experience:…read more Five stars for ABUSE and duplicity. Zero stars for caring for children, honesty, integrity, accountability. My 2 year old child knows the fear and havoc of ABUSE (physical and emotional) from this school and 'teachers'. My 2 year old (two!!) has NIGHTMARES about this place and the ABUSE she suffered at the hands of the staff here in May of 2019. The abuse was covered up and denied (it is a family-run business). My child detailed to me being hit, thrown, yelled at and threatened. The details were consistent, credible and enduring (over weeks and now months) and matched by the sudden onset of symptoms of PTSD (night terrors, screaming, heightened emotional states, moodiness, extra clingy, uncharacteristic outbursts, etc). Specifically, she did not want to participate in the 'graduation dance' practice and was trying to stay quietly hidden. My child has explained how the lead teacher snatched her arm, pulled her so hard she fell, while yelling at her, hit her across the chest and torso, then when my child was crying and screaming for her to stop, the teacher picked her up over her head and threw her, like a medicine ball, down on a wood-framed bench, she then told my child to repeat again and again that my child had tripped and fallen all on their own. I confronted the staff and the perpetrator's husband (also a teacher there) provided additional confirming details, unsolicited, to me. The owner (and mother in law of the perpetrator) told me that this was 'just family'. As I told her then, this is absolutely not how you treat family - or anyone, especially children. I thought that would be obvious. I ache for the children who are still there and am deeply concerned for their welfare. Please, please, please do not submit your children to this. These folks act one way in front of adults and parents and another when it's just children. I am ashamed and embarrassed we ever had our children in this place and were unaware of this sad and abysmal conduct for so long. We had other children there (over years) and after this incident asked I them if they had ever been abused or seen abuse. Thank God, both older kids had not been personally abused but both confirmed they had witnessed other incidents with other kids who had been hit, abused and threatened. A police and child protective services report was made and investigations conducted but the family-staff denied any wrong doing. Did I mention that this is a family business - so ethics and money are deeply intertwined here (if they could be said to have any ethics). Sadly, my two year old was not able to be a witness due to age, and this facility does not have video cameras - now I know why. It was left at a 'he said-she said' case...but in this case one of those people is a 2 year old child who has no motives other than to return and reflect love. The initial review was taken down due to 'lack of detail', I suspect after the business complained about the bad review (in fact a member of their family threatened me using this service!). I hope this suffices by providing more detail. I recommend you do not go here. I hope police shut this place down. But until then, you can do it by not giving them your business. Ever. Again, I disclaim that this is my personal opinion and experience with this business. I encourage you to make up your own mind, with the safety of your children foremost.

That part is on us. However, young children have accidents, especially when they are adjusting to a new environment, and I was shocked by how the situation was handled. I received a call telling me that my child had an accident and that I needed to bring shorts or pants because they were currently only in their shirt. I was also told that if I could not bring clothes, my child would remain without pants. That is the part I cannot accept. A childcare facility should still have a basic contingency plan for situations like this. No child should be left exposed, embarrassed, or without proper clothing because there are no backup options available. Even when a parent forgets something, the child's dignity and comfort should remain the priority. What makes this even more concerning is that since starting at this school, my child's confidence and self-esteem seem to have changed. They have started saying things like, "I don't use my listening ears. I never do," and "I'm a bad kid." As a parent, that is heartbreaking to hear. Children should be corrected and redirected with patience and care, not in a way that makes them internalize shame or feel like they are bad. A potty accident should be handled privately, calmly, and respectfully. It should never become something that adds to a child's embarrassment or affects how they see themselves. As a parent, it was incredibly stressful to receive that call and feel like my child's dignity was not being protected. I hope the school reviews its policy on potty accidents, backup clothing, and how children are spoken to when they are struggling or adjusting.

Anna is the director and head instructor of this location. She is so kind and very communicative. Each day I can see my kids improving. My daughter who is 7, enjoys coming to tutoring and doing her Kumon homework. My son is still struggling but I am also certain it is because Kumon is pushing him and helping him learn more than what the school system has. I have no complaints and really love that this place is helping my kids get up to grade level in reading, perhaps one day ahead. The Kumon curriculum is of international standards which Virginia Beach school system is not. Therefore, I do believe having my kids enrolled here will help advance them.
