Rose at the Layton location has been nothing short of amazing. She truly has the biggest heart, and it feels like family there. I cannot say enough about Rose and her team. Rose went above and beyond for our Blayke; we will forever be in her debt. We're so grateful to Rose. She truly cares about your child's education. Rose took the time to understand Blayke's needs and work with her and our family. Rose is very sweet, caring, and so kind. I can't tell anyone how much Sylvan has helped our family out. Everyone there is helpful, sincere, and takes the time to understand the needs of each individual. What we were most impressed by was the director; Joli. She considered all aspects of our needs and wants. She went above and beyond to get us situated and comfortable. What a horrible place. I didn't know if I was buying tutoring or a used car. I don't know if they help children academically or not, and I will not find out. They want $45 upfront to " assess" your child, then the entire time you're there, Rose is trying to finance you a 6 to 24 month $10,000 program. No mention of credentials, success stories, academic achievement, just money. Using all the slight of hand techniques like circling numbers, highlighting numbers, showing charts all in reference to how much money you will be paying them, not how well they have succeeded, or how well your child will do. All these number and charts are how much you'll pay. She should be working for Chevy not Sylvan. I tell her what I am interested in, and she comes back with something completely different. Oh, and the kids get some kind of tokens while you are away, when they taking said assessment, so when you get back, of course THEY want to come back, because they can use the tokens to get a toy! The first thing they do is show the kids the wall of toys they can get by redeeming the tokens. I have an MBA with emphasis in economics from Pepperdine University. I know all the tricks, and find them immoral. That's why I became a Civil Servant and not a business slime ball. This women, Rose, is nothing but a saleswomen who doesn't care one way or another about your child, she's just making a sale. Let me guess Rose, you learned all those tricks at a corporate training event??? Am I close? You assume you are smarter than the dumb people with dumb kids that come in, if the parents weren't dumb, then the kids wouldn't be right? Therefore, you can take advantage of the dumb parents by locking them into some payment plan, application fee, and down payment. Using what is valuable to them, their children, as pawns to advance your annual bonus, right? I was so disgusted that even if you could guarantee my kids a 4.0 GPA and acceptance into Columbia, I would not go to Sylvan. Maybe next time tell me more about what you can do for my child and less about what rates and discounts you can give me. FYI to the public looking for tutoring- an honest, reputable, successful place will give you prices upfront, because they don't need you, you need them. If a place tries to sell you this hard and get you to sign something before even allowing you time to think, which this place did, RUN! I have thousands of dollars in an bank left to my children for them to use on their education and could have paid in one lump sum, but I hate salesmen, and you are not an educator, you are a salesmen. If my wife hadn't booked the appointment and already paid you scammers over the phone, I would not have given you the time of day. I may have given you the $45, but hopefully I can prevent others from going to your terrible institution. You should really take a moral inventory Rose and see if you are comfortable making a living off of manipulating the weak minded. Not me, I read people for a living, and I read a lot of Overpriced BS at this place. read more

Nothing about education has been easy during COVID, and when you have an honors student you want them to stay on track. The director Joli introduced us to a great and affordable program at Sylvan's Layton location, where my student is able to come in for a few hours and have access to a teacher/tutor to help in any challenging areas. We have had a great experience at Sylvan, the teachers are amazing and have made learnIng really fun for our daughter. She has made great progress and loves going to learn. What a disappointment- the commercials are GREAT- however, my experience was less than stellar. I am a teacher, just got my Masters of Education- and I'm off for the summer. After seeing the commercials on tv I decided it might be a great place to teach and supplement my income. I scheduled an interview with a woman named Rose at the Main Street location in Layton. I "dressed for success" and arrived a little bit early. She was very curt with me and told me i "had to leave the premises" until my scheduled time. That was kind of weird but okay, I kind of understood. When I came back at the exact time I was scheduled to interview, she was running late. While I waited I could hear her working with a student. She seemed a little impatient with him, the tone of her voice was not very pleasant. But the minute that students mom came in, her whole demeanor changed to a bubbly, saccharine overly sweet persona. She started singing and praising that student loud enough for the mom to notice. It was just weird. When the student left she brought me into her office. I gave her my resume. But then she started trying to talk me out of applying there. Telling me there's no paid training, and the teachers get paid 11.00 an hour. She seemed totally distracted, did not even seem to care that I was an experienced teacher. Education was NOT brought up at all. I stayed upbeat throughout the 4 minute interview, but I could tell she was not interested in hiring me. I am so glad that I've never had the need to spend a ton of money to get extra education for my children. My first choice WOULD have been to try Sylvan Learning center because the commercials are so great. Unfortunately, I saw that the Sylvan on Main Street in Layton was NOT about quality teaching, it seemed more like a scam to get parents money. And, that they do not have licensed teachers (Utah State Licensed at least) there as advertised. What a let down. And an eye opener. read more

We met with Rose to enroll our child into the program. We spent a good hour going over options. The costs were very high as expected, however going to Sylvan myself when I was a child; It was an amazing experience. We were very undecided on how to pay for it ( in excess of $7000-$9000 ). They have different financing options and we were going to leave and decide. Rose then gave us an option to pay for 2 weeks worth of sessions for $500 (around $570 with application fees). I asked if there was some reason we decided to not start the classes the next week we could call and cancel putting our child on the schedule and get a refund. She said as long as we gave a 1 week notice to from the first class that was scheduled, that it would be fine. I felt very assured that things would work out. I put the $500 down, we had some circumstances health wise come up and my spouse called the next day ( which was one week before the classes started ) to cancel the classes for now and we would come back when we could afford it. We needed a refund and gave sufficient notice and she said she would get back to us after talking to the VP or CEO ( who was out of town for almost 5 days ). We had to call 6 days later and she declined to give us a refund. She said we didn't give sufficient notice to cancelling the classes for our child and the VP refused to refund the money as well. My spouse got on the phone with her and the VP. At this point Rose turned from a very sweetly optimistic person into handling the refund personally, getting defensive and the VP was no different. We told them we even understood the application fees were not refundable but this was extremely unprofessional of them both to be acting so childish about $500. Especially when we were going to come back after our tax return and drop $7000-9000 to enroll again. They simply didn't care. Make sure that you are all in when you decide to enroll and do not let them talk you into a "refundable" deposit that you can think on overnight. I am steering all the people I interact with to not put their kids into Sylvan and especially not do business with Rose. I am extremely dissatisfied with their treatment and taking advantage of us and especially the professionalism they portrayed only after they had our money. Now we just have $500 sitting in their system we will never use and with Sylvan; $500 will not get you even a foot in the door when it comes to how many classes your child will have to attend. Enrolling my son in Sylvan has been the best decision we have ever made. The difference in not only his scores academically, but his outlook on school as a whole has improved dramatically. He used to never bring home homework and tell me he did it at school. After several sessions at Sylvan, he was bringing homework home, having me go several times over his spelling words and having me check over his homework nightly. He has never once argued in having to go to Sylvan, even though it takes us 30 minutes to get there and then another 2 hours learning. He has noticed a difference in himself, and I believe any amount of money is worth the increase in his self esteem. I wish I would have done this sooner and avoided the nightly fight of getting him to do his homework. read more

This place lacks understanding of children and has no concept of what in right. I brought my daughter here who is struggling in school because of severe ADHD and anxiety. My daughter did not want to stay and do the assessment test. So the lady at Sylvan just locked my daughter inside the room despite her crying to leave. In addition the lady we met with has no concept that every child does not come from a home with a mom and a dad. She offended my daughter repeatedly who is 11 and she had to correct the lady and say, " l have two moms". Despite this the lady never apologized and further communication with her was very awkward. No professional organization would employ someone like this or do this to a child. read more

Sometimes, when reading a review, you have to consider the source. As the OTHER parent of the child mentioned below, with severe anxiety and ADHD, who is struggling with school (especially Math), I have a completely different opinion! I found the director that we met with to be very professional, caring, and kind. She knew that the best thing to do when our daughter came was to have the chance to visit with her alone, for a little while, and have the opportunity to assuage her fears and let her know that she was going to be ok and safe there. She made it very clear that this was a chance for her to succeed and develop confidence in achieving Math skills, with more individual attention and at a pace that she could handle. By the time we left there, our daughter was BEAMING with happiness that she had found someone who was really there to help her and who cared. That is the real story. Sylvan has so far been the perfect fit for our daughter. She goes there now with no anxiety, and has said how nice her teachers are, and what a good experience she has each time. That is the REAL story! I love this place! So impressed with Sylvan! read more
