Yikes!!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS CONTRACTOR…read more We contracted with them to do a very simple job of installing trim on our kitchen cabinets. However, when they were done they left a very large and unsightly gap at the top of the trim that was installed. I was told this was due to the unevenness of the counter tops. Normally, irregularities would be discovered and addressed when the field measurements are taken. But apparently there were some miscalculations, so we ended up with the gap. I offered to compromise and provide some additional trim to cover this gap in lieu of tearing out the newly installed trim and starting over. Unfortunately, when I brought this proposal to New Prairie Construction's attention, I was told it would cost me over $200.00 to repair their mistake. I'm unsure how this became my fault, but I'm very disappointed. In addition to the workmanship, we agreed to a not to exceed, time and materials contract. However when I got the bill, it was hundreds of dollars in excess of their original not to exceed limit. They eventually adjusted the bill, but it took several e-mails and discussions for then to own up to their mistake.

The exterior was wood siding. The wood had not been painted for years and was clearly very distressed. Shaw's with the help of its paint supplier figured out what specialty paint was needed for those parts of the siding that were the worst. In addition, Shaw's had a team of carpenters who re-sided a portion of the house in preparation for the final painting. Great job. The second job was for an out-of-town rental home. Along with the painting, Shaw's refinished some walls and even lined me up with a glass repair business that helped replace crack windows and mirrors. The third job, just completed, was another rental home where a tenant, without my permission of course, painted a bedroom a Kelly green with some stream of consciousness graffiti for a bit more flair. Shaw's hung in there and after about a dozen coats of paint and a modification of the neutral paint color, eliminated the putrid green paint. I called them again on October 13, 2022, to just clarify and get things straight as I did not want to leave a bad review. An hour after I left the voicemail, I receive a call from the owner (Brett Shaw). He began talking to me very aggressively. He proceeds to tell me that he thought my inquiry was a joke which is why he never responded to my messages or showed up. My request was for trim work and baseboards to be painted in my bathrooms but also stated that if this project is too small that other jobs could be done as well. As a consumer, it is not my job to know the expenses or the prices of this company. I was looking for an estimate while trying to support a local company. Brett has since responded to my review on Google calling me a scam and a liar. I do not appreciate his actions or business practices. Overall, I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and even put on my Google review "Would love for them to get in touch so I can change my review and support a local business". I had a very bad experience and would not recommend them and will not use them again. It's a very long story about all the issues so I will summarize. They replaced the roof and immediately I noticed damage to the interior of my home. The damage consisted of cracked ceilings. Freedom Roofing didn't want to take responsibility for the damage or the repairs. I was forced to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau to try to entice action by the company. The company did not response in the required 14 days and I had to call the BBB to ask them to illicit a response from the company. When prompted Freedom finally responded. Inept drywall people came to my home and repaired the cracks and painted the ceilings a different ceiling color and did a poor job on the repair. I called the owner of Freedom Roofing and he came to my home and agreed the ceiling job looked poor and asked me to get an estimate for a paint job to fix the job his company botched. I got an estimate and submitted it to him and he deducted it from the balance I owed him for the roof job. This process took 5 long months. I am sure the company would of not taken responsibility but for the fact that I filed a complaint with the BBB. There were many other issues, but that was one main one. About 20 years ago we discovered Jackson Quality Construction located about two miles from our home. We started with a small project of removing wooden paneling in our basement so the floor could be waterproofed. Since then Jackson has done several projects around our house always when promised and always perfect. They built a new deck for us last year that visually looked much better than our old one and is very solid. More recently they patched a roof leak that the roofer could not seem to correct even after two visits and a few hundred dollars. Their crew also is genuinely friendly. What we appreciate most is that they will keep at it until we are completely satisfied. There's no just walking away after we pay. However, be prepared that Jackson is quite expensive. Be prepared to pay top dollar. We think it's worth the expense to get it done right without stress and worry. Many of our neighbors have used Jackson and have been highly satisfied. In fact, that's how we learned about them.
