We also had their onions rings which were some of the best I've ever had! Super crispy yet soft on the inside. The one dish that we had high expectations for but was disappointed were the duck fat potatoes, they were super hard and tasted very stale. Also had the chocolate guiness cake for dessert, it had a cream cheese type frosting and was a nice way to end the meal. It was very very very busy and even with a reservation on Saturday night we still had to wait. Service was great the entire service!

We didn't have a reservation and the place was quite crowded, so it was a surprise that we were seated at a comfy, two-person booth. We wound up sharing a couple of things: the Fiesta Salad ("Mixed greens, arugula, avocado, black beans, corn, grape tomatoes, pickled red onion, salsa verde, crispy corn tortillas, feta cheese, creamy lime dressing") and the Street Chicken Tacos ("Roasted Achiote chicken, shredded cabbage, cheddar cheese, Pico de Gallo, green onion, chipotle aioli, honey lime vinaigrette, cilantro"). Despite some regretfully slow service, the food arrived relatively quickly and was tasty. The tacos, while nothing mind-blowing, hit the spot and were elevated considerably by the available hot sauce. And the salad was well put together and full of quality ingredients. It's actually a bit of a relief to discover that Jack Astor's is almost exactly how I remembered it, complete with the server writing their name on the table in crayon.

For brunch I believe the three of us picked the same choice: The Simple Breakfast, which consists of two eggs any style (I chose scrambled), Home fries and toast (I chose whole wheat bread) with choice of bacon, ham, sausages or peameal bacon. They give you 3 of whichever you choose and I chose sausages. The portions of practically everything were pretty huge which made for a good deal considering the price, and I found everything quite delicious. In my previous review I noted that we had fairly lengthy waits after our meals were finished at our last visit and I took off half a star in my rating. Today we had kind of a long wait for our bill but not like last time, and due to the quality and quantity of food I received with respect to the price and our friendly server, I decided to 'add back' the half star to restore a perfect rating. My family and I might make it back here for another meal before long, but if not this will likely be our Pub of choice for Thanksgiving dinner once again in October.

The dish arrived a short time later and I was immediately concerned. Hovering around the edges were large swaths of completely unmelted cheese, which is obviously a complete no-no with a dish of this sort. It only got worse from there, though. The plate of food arrived to the table long after it had been prepared, so it wasn't hot. Heck, it was barely warm. I'm not one to complain or send food back, but good golly was I ever tempted to in this case. The chili was dry and flavorless, but again, it would've been fine if it had been hot. The cheese that was under the chili was okay, I guess, but there was absolutely no meltiness to be had. The whole thing was one big clump, basically. It's too bad, really, because the fries tasted like they had some potential. And that "dollop of sour cream"? Non existent. Our waiter actually noticed this a few minutes after I started eating and asked if I wanted some sour cream brought out. Too little too late, my man. I honestly don't understand how a joint sends out a dish this terrible. It just shows an absolutely disdain for the customer and frankly it makes me genuinely upset. I'm coming to your establishment to spend my hard-earned money and *this* is how you treat me? Ridiculous. Needless to say, I'll never return.

It turns out that he was the perfect guide to walk me through some excellent beers. I ended up trying 4 half pints and they were all delicious! Their menu is a nice selection of meat free and carnivore options which is great for mixed groups. We shared an appie and everyone seemed to enjoy their meals.

My partner and I shared nachos to start. Then my partner had the beef vindaloo and I went for a burger with a side salad. Everything was fresh, hot, and full of flavour. It's classic British pub food done well. If you're in the area and want great food and good energy, The Churchmouse is a solid win.

Today was different - the lovely lady was not working and the place was being run by 2 distracted fools. Fool #1 was unable to get the order correct and the breakfast arrived with no sausage. When asked where the sausage was he shrugged, said nothing and disappeared only to reemerge and lope over into the corner behind the bar and get busy on his phone (guy with beard and glasses). Eventually he showed up at my table with a glass of water - no sausage. I remarked that he should get off his phone and serve and he gave me the fey shoulder shrug indicating he did not give a fuck. He returned behind the bar and his colleague (fool #2) asked him something and they both gave that same fey shrug and disappeared back into the kitchen and reemerged with a sausage in a bowl - at this point I was finished eating the eggs, toast and bacon - the sausage was too late and my mood for these 2 idiots had expired and I left without tipping. It is not unreasonable to expect that a chain like Firkin could do something about this sub standard of could-not-care-less attention to their customers. The 2 fools who were supposed to be working and serving customers act as though the customers are a bother.
