As someone still discovering what Unitarian Universalism means for me, I've found there's a big difference between reading about a faith and actually experiencing the community, and Greater Lansing gave me a really positive glimpse of that. The message on trust and nonviolence especially stuck with me. One of the ideas I took away was that nonviolence isn't the same as simply being passive or avoiding disagreement. It asks us to build trust, listen to one another and find ways to confront conflict and injustice without losing sight of another person's humanity. With how divided everything seems lately, that felt like something I could carry into everyday life regardless of religious belief. That's also something I wish more people understood about Unitarian Universalism. You don't have to arrive with a particular creed or even a belief in God. Christians, atheists, agnostics, humanists and people drawing wisdom from many different traditions can share the same community. The emphasis is much more on exploring what you believe and then considering how those values affect the way you live and treat other people. I felt welcomed at UU Lansing, and I left with something meaningful to think about rather than feeling like I had been told what I was required to believe. If you're in the Lansing area and miss the community and deeper conversations that can come with church, but want the freedom to ask questions and find your own path, this is definitely a place worth visiting.

This last Sunday was my first time back in years and it still the same comforting and safe place I remember. The kids programs are great and the pastors are always amazing. So you know where I'm coming from...I visited Faith Church for the first time today. I'm sad to say…read morethat I had to walk out, I didn't feel comfortable with what was being preached on the platform. During the sermon when Pastor Jones was preaching, he related Satan as the 'bad guy' in the Bible & how he's a lot like The Joker & Darth Vader along with other villains. Then he shows clips of the movie: "Batman Begins" during his preaching. He read 3 scriptures in the 20 min. we stayed listening but he didn't interpret the scripture or explain much from The Bible or preaching from the word of God. He continued to talk about (his own thoughts) & different characters in movies along with relating it to our daily lives. I wanted to give the Pastor the benefit of the doubt & that's why we stayed as long as we did. I didn't want to walk out but I was very hurt & felt ashamed. It was appalling to me that they would show a movie that had nothing to do with Jesus or our God...& on the platform of the church that's in God's house! I learned more about Superheroes & Villians than anything else. I want to learn about scripture, understanding the word, & growing spiritually in my relationship with God & I don't feel I received that from this church. Maybe today was different from the Pastor's normal teachings, maybe he was trying something new, I'm not sure exactly but I wish this church the best of God's blessings.

We have people here that are at all spots in their faith journeys - who feel welcome to explore Jesus wherever they are at.
