Fish and Chips (what, is that Mexican? or Texan? nope just generic) - tick. It's a massive space as well, and when we were there, there were only 4 other tables. Which made it feel like one of those towns on the Mexican border, where tumbleweeds are blowing and the townsfolk are hiding behind swinging doors. Them ones. Yup, just really average, and really boring. Didn't like this brand of tequila 'n' Tex 'n' Mex very much.

I fully intended to come back for dinner, but everything on the menu sounded good and I had skipped lunch. I opted for a burrito to take back to the hotel with me. When I got back to my room and opened up the bag, I couldn't believe how big the burrito was! Wow. As for the flavor? It wasn't bad, but it wasn't quite Mexican food. It's kind of a fusion .. of what, I'm not sure. Regardless, it was a good burrito, the salsa was okay - not great. Chips were disappointing (store bought). I know I'm spoiled being from Southern California, I'm used to getting freshly made chips at most restaurants. I'd definitely eat here again. Expectations have been appropriately managed.

Tequila Tex-Mex - Very tasty. This restaurant is dialed into the flavored and textures of Telmex. Reasonable prices too. Check it out.

Living in Texas, one food you eat a lot of is Tex-Mex so you tend to be able to tell what's good…read moreand what isn't. Coming to the UK, I didn't expect there to be great Tex-Mex options but I did think there would be a few places of over-priced imitations, which i'm sorry to have to say that this place is. My first impressions of the place were very positive, the restaurant is tastefully decorated in authentic Mexican décor and has a classy feel to it. During the week they do a happy hour from 5-7pm and have a nice bar and waiting area where you can enjoy some of their great cocktails. To eat I had nachos and smoky chipotle barbecue chicken wings as a starter and some ribs and Cajun chicken as a my main; a tender half rack of ribs and a cajun chicken breast covered with bacon and melted jack cheese served with jalapeño coleslaw. This was all washed down with a few cervezas, Corona to be specific, which i'm sorry to say was the only thing I couldn't fault. On previous visits I have tried the enchiladas, burritos and sliced fajita steak. They did taste good but nothing to write home about and some of them I could have made better myself at home. Unfortunately that's usually the thing you get with chain restaurants; an overpriced imitation of a certain type of food. There are things I lived about Chimichanga and I have been here a few times. The food is tasty in parts but not at the price it's being sold for. If you try it just don't expect authentic Tex-Mex and treat it as something to fill you up and their take on Tex-Mex. However, at £50-60 for two people, for that price I'd prefer to go somewhere I know the food is great and that I'd get my money's worth.

Plentiful portions of well observed tex-mex food (the tex is better than the mex, which has something of an afterthought-y quality now that that masterchef woman has put proper mexican food is on the telly andeverything) served by friendly staff on big ol' plates in a timely fashion. The Buffalo wings are good for the UK - and are improved by liberal application of the very well-chosen Louisiana hot sauce that lights up every table. The free tortilla chips are welcome and the Burgers hefty. A decent selection of elaborate virgin drinks will service the person who drove you along with his teetotal mates; I'm sure the cocktails are as good. Smith and Western's reminds me of when TGI Friday's opened in Reading. It was like it came from another planet where everyone was happy to see you and cleaned things and had read The Society of the Spectacle but, instead of taking it as a blistering critique of late-capitalism, had taken it as an inspirational instruction manual on the possibilities of restaurant decoration. TGI's has become a rather tacky commonplace, but Smith and Western's has been built by true believers in the possibilities of theming as an integral contributory factor to the eating experience. I recommend it - unless you're the sort of person who won't like it. You know who you are. To you I say only that the Faerie Queene was written in deliberately arcane language and that your quest for authenticity is futile. Now pass me the Louisiana sauce and shush.
