Panhandle Tex Mex Eatery & Bar - Margarita sampler. Strawberry, mango, pine lime & lemon

We came to Panhandle for a quick bite before heading back to San Remo for a gig. A sign out the…read morefront of the restaurant called it a Family Cantina, and as soon as we stepped through the doors it was obvious it was truly aimed at families. Even more tacky random Mexican stuff lined the walls, ceilings and wherever else it could be nailed to and the sounds of screaming kids welcomed us in. We didn't have a booking but got a table without a hassle, but I could see it being very busy in here during peak holiday times. We ordered a margarita sampler each, which was four different flavours of margarita in small glasses of (Lemon, Strawberry, Pine Lime and Mango). They were all very quite and didn't taste like there was much alcohol in them at all. After our recent travels around America the sight of queso on a menu resulted in that being quickly ordered. It had a lot more beans in it than anything else and not a lot of cheese, but it was quite nice and the chips that came with it were tasty. For main I ordered a soft taco combo plate, which were okay but nothing special. Someone else at our table ordered the fajitas which was quite a large dish and was rather tasty. I probably would not return to Panhandle, but if you're in the mood for what is probably the only (Tex) Mexican on Philip Island it's worth stopping in to.

Ok, so I am giving this place the benefit of the doubt. It is Mexican food in Australia. It was…read moredefinitely not the best, but it works. It had chips and salsa which was what I needed, since I was somewhat tired of eating beef. Now that being said. This is the cheesiest Mexican food place on planet earth. If you could buy a cheap souvenir the owners have bought it and it now sits on their walls. There were mexican hats, texas license plates, cowboy pictures and about everything else possible. Wow... The service was actually good. Although we were the only people in the place, not a good sign at 6pm.

Terrible food, even worse service. I know that it is a…read moretex-mex place and that the food is going to be in no way authentic Mexican but even for tex-mex food it is terrible. Fish tacos are just fish fingers, everything is served with pale looking beans and bright orange rice. The service is shocking too, had to wait for a whole table of 12 to get their mains even though we ordered first because we ordered an entré? Waitresses rude and food way to overpriced. There are much better places to eat in Aspendale so save your pennies and go anywhere else.

I have to preface this review by stating that I was born and raised in the US, in Phoenix Arizona,…read morewhich is on the border of Sonora Mexico. Phoenix has an abundance of amazing Mexican restaurants, so my standards are very high when it comes to Mexican food...and sadly Nachos fails to meet those standards, as far as the food is concerned. We had the nachos for an entree, I had the fish tacos and my wife had the taco combo. Unfortunately all I can give a pass to was the rice that accompanied our mains. The rice was well prepared, tasty and authentic in flavour. I won't pile on regarding the rest, as none of it was bad per se, it just wasn't real Mexican food. I do compliment them on their variety of Mexican beer and Tequila. Do yourself a favour and pass on the Corona, only penche turistas drink Corona. Grab yourself a Pacifico, a Tecate, or better yet a Negra Modelo. If you haven't experienced authentic Mexican food before, then there's no reason you won't like Nachos Cantina. The food, atmosphere and service are all good. But if you've had real Mexican you may want to skip this place, as it will leave you wanting.

Juanita's does a taco night on the first Friday of every month. We decided to check it out tonight…read more... and we weren't disappointed! The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The chicken mole was the best I've had in Oz, as were the corn tortillas - the latter had real flavor and must have been prepared by someone who has eaten real ones for many years in Mexico. Don't be put off by the street scene outside. The place itself was cozy and service friendly.
