Basket tacos are steamed corn tortilla tacos with simple fillings kept warm and served from a basket. These simple creations serve as quick, cheap and easy lunch options for the day workers. Their simplicity is what makes them so incredible; pure comfort food. We ordered a chicharron and papas taco. It was seriously like 10-15 MXN per taco. Gobbled these up with its ultra tender contents. They have a ton of toppings on the side and even a much revered green sauce to add all the flavors. Otherwise, on their own, they are still quite yummy. Eat standing up and pay when you are done, the honor system in full play here. It definitely beat searching down a sit down restaurant or eating at one of the touristy eateries within the Coyoacan Market.

Always delicious and reliable tacos de canasta in Coyoacan!…read more After watching The Tacos Chronicles on Netflix, my husband got in his head that he wanted to try tacos de canasta. The difficult thing about the tacos de canasta is that they "move" and they are usually not in just "one place", so we were happy to find two guys which sell them every day at the same spot! They are conveniently located two blocks from Frida and Diego's house in Coyoacan and in front of a bodega. We tried their chicharron and bean tacos, and they were delicious! Their salsa verde was the BOMB! Tacos de canasta are very cheap and a few pesos can take you a long way. Please don't try to pay with large bills or credit cards. You pay after you finish eating, because you can always order more after eating a couple of tacos. PS: This location is not the one from the show, but I am using it as a reference so y'all know which type of tacos I am talking about.

It's funny, sometimes when your super hyped for a trip,You read reviews, you watch videos, you do all…read moreyou can to prepare for all the cool things you can do on your trip. Well La Esquina Del Chilaquil was for sure one of those places. Super hyped-lots of social media videos on it and it's one of the "cheap eats" spots all the influencers say one must visit when going to Mexico City. It's so hyped that they sold out the first 2x the wife and I tried to go there. Somehow my angel of a wife agreed to try them for a third time and this time we were able to get our hands on some tortas. So basically what they are famous for is these viral breakfast type tortas that are filled with chilaquiles inside. What I didn't know until I got the sandwich in hand was that they also came with either a chicken cutlet or a pork cutlet. Because of a slight language barrier,I ended up after a short line ordering two of the tortas both with chicken cutlets. So it's basically, chicken cutlets, beans, crema, cheese and chilaquiles inside a torta sandwich roll. Pretty basic and inexpensive, only cost 50 Pesos($2.85 USD) each. Everything is to go,so we found a little park nearby to eat our sandwiches. Sadly, the tortas were just more disappointing than great. The chilaquiles lacked any crunch, the flavors were decent but maybe it was the unexpected chicken cutlet, not sure,it just wasn't a great dining experience overall. Reading other reviews,I see I'm in the minority on this one and maybe it was just an off day or maybe my expectations were too high but yeah they just didn't work out too well for me. I will say this, they sell out every single day,so if you do plan on going to try em out,try to get there before 11am to guarantee your torta. Here is to hoping your experience is better than mine-Be Safe Out There.

Okay. AMAZING. We…read morecame on a Tuesday around 9:30 pm and luckily there was no line. There's no menu and no real sign, so we double-checked it was the right place by asking someone who was already eating . The team didn't speak English, so we basically got whatever they decided to make for us. I was hoping for chicken anyway, so it worked out, but my friend and I originally planned to share and try two different proteins. I DEVOURED the chicken torta chilaquiles sandwich. It did start to get a little tough towards finish towards the end, but I powered through because it was such a flavor bomb. No way I was leaving that behind. I was expecting the chilaquiles to be crunchy, and they weren't- but they also weren't soggy in a gross way. The texture actually worked in the sandwich, and the flavor was so good. And THE CREMA. So rich. So yum. Big fan. It filled me up for the entire day. Zero regrets.

A little torn on this review, because I thought the staff was quite welcoming and sweet,…read morethough also very busy after our food was served, so it was difficult to get anyone's attention to ask for utensils. Meanwhile maybe I didn't order the right items because the food was ok though didn't particularly stand out. On a Sunday afternoon around 1pm in January I came to this market very much the foreign tourist, wide-eyed and curious to see what I would find here. Mercado de Coyoacán is a local market that is also recommended by well known references like Eater and Time Out as food destination for locals and tourists alike, with what feels like about three dozen prepared food stands in the market. Not knowing much Spanish or having done any research prior to stepping foot into this market, in my desperation I resorted to G-maps while wandering around, and luckily I happened to be within a few market storefronts away from #186, the stall number for Antojitos Sandy. This stand is so popular that they have a few different seating areas, the counter immediately around the kitchen, and a couple overflow tables in market stall spaces diagonally neighboring the kitchen. Food I tried: - café de olla $45*: their version of this Mexican preparation brewed in a clay pot (olla de barro) with piloncillo (unrefined cane sugar), cinnamon, and perhaps cloves or orange peel--was good, pretty standard. - agua Fresca guayaba (guava juice) $45: on the sweeter side, decent. - pozole rojo $135: probably what I enjoyed the most about this meal, a flavorful broth soup with pulled pieces of chicken, topped with chopped crunchy radishes, iceberg lettuce, and deep fried tortillas (aka chips) that you can break up and add to the soup for that added crunchy texture. - tlayudas Oaxacañas $165: this Oaxacan specialty is one of the menu items this food stand is known for, and is a large, thin grilled tortilla topped with toppings of refried beans, pork lard, diced bits of Oaxacan cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado and a protein of your choice (shredded chicken, pork, beef, sausage), of which I chose suadero which was a mix. This was huuge, larger than some personal pan pizzas in diameter. The tortilla is kinda crispy though I found mine a little soft in the middle and from the moisture of the toppings. Having never eaten one before, I found it a bit hard to eat with the toppings falling off as I went along and no utensils. I read online afterwards it's supposed to be eaten broken off bit by bit, which I found a bit messy to eat in a market setting. The flavors were a bit bland for me, from the tortilla to the toppings, the vegetables were raw and unseasoned and the meat wasn't particularly savory. I think I probably was supposed to top the tlayuda with some of the salsas sitting in jars on the table though it was a bit hard to reach sitting at a communal table of ten. Coupled with the difficulty to eat, unfortunately it didn't leave the best impression. I'm glad I tried it though wouldn't say I'm clamoring for more. That being said perhaps it was just the combination I ordered, there are a lot of other options on the menu so who's to say they aren't better? Certainly the crowds waiting for seats and the mass of glowing reviews deem it worthy. *all prices in pesos.
