But all it takes is showing up after you've figuratively fallen on your face and you will already have progressed. Even if you sit and watch without participating, making the effort to be there instills a habit in you. You just have to do it, although sometimes that simple act of showing up seems like the hardest. What I really appreciate about the class is how the instructor, Charles, seems to tailor how he handles each student according to what they might be able to handle. He's big on "manageable steps" so you're only pushed outside of your comfort zone if he thinks you can handle it. If you can only introduce yourself, then that's all you do until you're ready to move on. If you're an actor who wants to focus on scene study, then you can work on material with a partner and perform the scene in each class with the option of participating in a showcase. Or you can do improv (my fav!). Everything is tailored to you as an individual and I think that's so important. I've met some great people and everyone is very supportive. Cons: To see progress, you have to commit. Ok I lied, that's not really a con :D Just get it over it. If you searched for acting classes, then you want to go. However, I found the teacher's approach to performance anxiety rather formulaic and ineffective. In the first class, you will introduce yourself and answer questions. The next class or few classes, you will do improv. Then, at the teacher's leisure (and your expense), he will give you a scripted scene to work on. He is very lackadaisical about assigning scenes, and he typecasts regularly. The Irish student repeatedly gets the alcoholic roles, the black man gets angry male roles, the basketball player plays a basketball player, and so on. If you're a woman, I advise to pick your own scenes lest you want to be limited to relationship scenes with one-dimensional roles while watching your male classmates continually play interesting, developed characters. While he pays lip service to choice and comfort in the class, the teacher's approach is that of a dogmatic director who should not be questioned rather than that of supportive teacher. When you express discomfort with a scene or lack of understanding at his direction, he becomes rigid and confrontational and treats you as though you're being difficult and argumentative for not simply nodding in agreement. For this reason, despite his holding the class out as a safe space for people with anxiety, I would not recommend the class for overcoming stage-fright. He seemed to forget that, unlike a professional acting gig, we're paying him for a service rather than the other way around. The class does not provide any lessons on the basics of acting. When the teacher gives you a scene, he provides no instruction at all. You can labor over a scene for several weeks without direction only to have him tell you right as you're about to present your scene that your approach is completely wrong. When he does give instruction, it is vague. One time when I tried to apply his direction during the following class, he argued that I was wrong and that he had never given me such an instruction; notably, he did not bother to clear up the confusion by clarifying what his instruction had been. Several times he told me to "just read" the lines, but when I did so it would lead to frustration because what he meant was to read flatly, ignoring punctuation and emphasis, which is not how I normally read. He was resistant and cold when I would I try to approach him at the end of the class to get clarification on his feedback. I left the class completely frustrated and more confused than ever about how to act. And while other students seemed pleased with the class, I noticed that they received the same criticism class after class as they struggled to put his vague instructions into practice. If someone expressed the difficulty of trying to apply his advice, rather than provide helping words or exercises, he would say, "that's acting." Yes, we know what is acting. How about explaining how to do it? His strongest suit is, when you have finally gotten to fully act out a scene, advising you on how to make small changes in body language, pacing, and prop usage to be more convincing. Consequently, I would recommend this class to those who are already comfortable with their acting skills and want simply to get feedback on fine-tuning scenes.

I had a fellow artist friend highly recommend the program and James Price. The class really opened me up, and is good not just for actors, but those trying to get better with improvisation and public speaking, or even learn to stop caring what others think and just live as you. After I finished the beginner class I was invited back to be on the conservatory track. I took two other courses, Voice and Singing, both led by great teachers as well. Oh, and every class I took was more than reasonably priced. I 1000% would be continuing if I had the time to focus on acting at the moment. They also have acting labs that are open to all students several times a month. I never once saw any teacher behave unprofessionally. The big problem with the dramatic arts is there tends to be a lot of narcissists that end up in the field. These types usually make the class about themselves, and their teachers just an obstacle to their inevitable success for which they are willing to put in none of the effort or work. These are the types that seem to have an issue with James, and post for the world to see. We had just one person drop a class I was in, the Meisner intro (it wasn't their idea of what an acting class should be--did you research even an iota?) and they were easily the laziest in the group, skipping out on all the required between-class work (which will help you so much!). To those looking to dip their toes into acting, or novice actors looking to level up their skills, I would highly recommend checking out The Acting Studio. Really easy location by Penn Station and Herald Square. If you come ready to do all the work and then some, you're gonna have an amazing time. If you're not willing to leave your ego at the door for a minute, you'll probably end up here writing a bad review.

I must say that I didn't do my review research ahead of time but it probably wouldn't have changed my mind because the negative reviews that I found on The Acting Studio and James Price in particular are hidden or have been removed. I found out by word of mouth after being insulted more than once by James in class for no apparent reason. I'll be honest and detailed Our class on Fridays which is taught by James is supposed to end at 10pm. He goes well over sometimes close to midnight with no regard for our personal lives. If you say that you have to go early, which is really on time, he insulted you by saying that everyone has things to do. Most of the class is filled with his stories of his past roommates or his rants and fights with his young husband Aong who is from Thailand. James makes assumptions about you based on your looks and ethnicity. Facts: He called me a BITCH in class because I stood up for myself after begin belittled for asking a question. He apologized to me later in front of the class and with only a month to go until our last class... he once again belittled me for asking if I could ask a question. His response was: No you can't. You are always disrupting the flow of class. Even if this was true... should this have been told to me in front of class? A good teacher explains things the first time so that the students don't always have to ask what do you mean by that? To add insult to injury, he has a young male student from Italy who told me to get over it and then proceeded to jump on James' bandwagon. James has made reference to me having a hard life without even knowing my background. I could go on but let's just say that his class isn't for an intelligent, WOKE, AA woman. He's a coward and he needs an audience to showcase his off the wall behavior which can change from crying to laughing to yelling to belittling in a second. I question his mental state. No one in class is ever sure of what our assignments for the next class are. Everyone is afraid to go first because no one is ever clear on his directions. The class doesn't have to be 9 months. We do the same thing over and over each week which drags the class out and I suspect for money. Take your money and go elsewhere.

All teachers are or have been in the industry for years. The way they teach is very hands on. It's probably one of the very few schools that gives you this much Hands on experience. You learn at class and get to do it in real life the same week. It's very nice that while all the information fresh you get to experience it and really learn how it works. All lectures are connected in a way that help you become a good storyteller. We are learning a lot at New York Film Academy. I'm so happy that I decide to attend here for my BFA in film diploma. SHORT REVIEW: FIVE STARS…read more This is our second "semester" with Robofun and it is a great haven for children where they learn many skills for their future. LONGER REVIEW: I recently attended a tech event which focused on the future of AI and Big Data. When someone asked a big data person from IBM: "What are the important skills that children need today?" he replied: "Empathy, Teamwork, Aesthetics and Creativity" These are all of the things that Robofun provides for my daughter. At first glance it looks like the kids are just having fun but the work that the children do teaches them skills that they can apply to their future selves. The founder, Laura Hart, is a graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Education and she genuinely cares about children and what's best for them. She's also a nice person so naturally her staff and teachers are great at what they do. They care for the kids and teach them skills in a way that helps build the children's confidence and create really unique projects. I usually get pretty bored at summer camp presentations but at RoboFun, when the children presented their work, I was so impressed with the robots they created where they coded, how some composed music, how they worked closely with their teammates, and proudly presented their projects. This is an excellent learning environment for my children and they cannot wait to attend every day! FIVE STARS
