I'm sure the fitness-conscious have been aware of the non-traditional work-out industry for a while…read morenow--the aim is to get people into an activity rather than simple weightlifting or working on machines. Yoga, tai chi, rock climbing--all of these activities involve a certain body awareness and require a basic level of core strength and fitness, and they're usually fun enough so you're never really thinking about sets and reps and muscle groups. Last night, I encountered one the toughest but most-enjoyable workouts when I went to the Circus Arts Institute. Located in a loft complex near Dekalb Ave, I joined a number of students (I was one amongst four beginner students, in particular) for a 90-minute session consisting of a pretty strenuous warm-up and cool-down as well as activities including tightrope walking, rope climbing, and trapeze. I would find myself both wired and tired after the session, the excitement and fun of what we did clashing with the unexpected amount of exertion required. Everyone here is all smiles and encouraging, eager to see you succeed in anything that you might try.

I'd been thinking about taking aerial lessons for three or four years, maybe longer - since before…read moreI got into burlesque. So, yeah, the circus classes aren't necessarily related to my tassel and glitter endeavors. (Maybe it was sparked by Yvette calling me Cirque de Sadie and suggesting it should be my stage name.) Whatever. Every few months, we'd be at an event and there'd be girls up on a trapeze or in the, um, circle-thing. "Freakin' amazing!" I would say to myself. "I can totally do that." I looked into it, and bookmarked the Circus Arts Institute web site. Then another year passed, until a few of us were talking about pole dance classes. I'd like to give that a try, too, but first I had to put up and give the trapeze a go. I enrolled in May for a 12-week session. Carrie Heller, who runs - and lives in - the Institute, is really fascinating. She encourages everyone to do cardio outside of class; she talks about diet and nutrition; she has a degree in physiology, I think, as well. In the first class, I climbed the Spanish Web (the rope), got up on the trapeze, and attempted walking the tight wire and juggling. Not so good with the juggling. Next class, I tried rings and loved it... got totally hooked. For my birthday this year, Bryant got our friends to contribute to a gift certificate for a second session. Some of them came to the last night of the first session, which was a sort of show-off day. I did a rings routine; nothing too hard, but it certainly demonstrated what I had learned over the first couple of months. Now, my second session is halfway complete. I'm going to have to re-allocate some funding to continue with it. Circus/aerial training is the crack - highly recommended crack.

Instead of looking elsewhere, I decided to stick with Benjamin Prep, and I'm honestly glad I did. My oldest is now blossoming as he moves through the classes. As a proud parent of two daughters--one in high school and the other in middle school--at Impact…read moreLeadership Christian Academy, I can confidently say that this school has been a true blessing to our family. From day one, we've felt welcomed and supported by a community that genuinely cares about the academic, spiritual, and personal development of each student. The teachers and staff go above and beyond to create a nurturing, Christ-centered environment where our girls are not only challenged academically but also encouraged to grow in character and faith. Our high school daughter has absolutely thrived. She's receiving a top-notch education that is preparing her for college and life beyond, but what we value just as much is the leadership training and the strong biblical foundation she's building. She's becoming a confident, thoughtful young woman with a clear sense of purpose--and we know that's no accident. Impact Leadership Christian Academy is shaping her to be a leader who lives by her values. Our middle school daughter is equally flourishing. She's embraced learning in a way we hadn't seen before--engaged, enthusiastic, and eager to grow. She's surrounded by teachers who see her potential and encourage her daily. We've also seen such positive growth in her spiritual walk, and it's been beautiful to witness her excitement about Bible study, chapel, and service projects. The balance of academic rigor, leadership development, and spiritual formation at ILCA is truly unmatched. The small class sizes and close-knit community mean our girls are known, valued, and supported every step of the way. We're so thankful to be part of the Impact family and couldn't be more proud of who our daughters are becoming under their guidance. We wholeheartedly recommend ILCA to any family looking for a school that partners with you in raising strong, faith-filled, future-ready leaders.

The first workshop I attended was an intro to Adobe Illustrator. We had people of many different professional backgrounds in attendance. Although the class was beginner, they also answered the questions of those with a little more experience. When the presenter did not know the answer, the group may have chimed in to help. (Did I ever mention I love Atlanta) The most recent workshop I attended was the Transferable Skills workshop led by Nita Penn. This session was amazing! It was interactive, relevant, high energy, and applicable to our everyday lives. Nita was well prepared, fun, energetic, and inspiring. A lot of times we take workshops that work on our hard skills and it was nice that General Assembly scheduled something to help us learn about soft skills and how they can be transferable and applicable in various situations. I hope to see Nita continue to lead workshops at this location. I can guarantee that as she starts doing more workshops on various topics I will for sure be there with my friends! I am looking forward to building my personal and professional portfolio and am thankful for the opportunities that General Assembly is providing at such a reasonable cost.
