This little local radio station is huge…read more Have you ever been to the studio on Central Avenue? You wouldn't believe that this little storefront operation is the epicenter of public radio in upstate New York and beyond. And beyond is putting it mildly. I've heard WAMC into Canada, well into Massachusetts, and almost down to Manhattan. The footprint of our local public radio broadcaster is enormous. Sure, there are times when I listen to the commentary and want to roll my eyes. And there are other times when the musical guests aren't to my tastes. Part of me wishes for more nationally syndicated content. However, I love listening to VOX Pop Food Fridays from 2-3pm. And for some reason, whenever I pop in the car, I hear Randy Simon talking about the environment. Recently, I even heard Ewan M talking about the news of the day. Food Fridays have been on fire lately. Today it was about the Jewish Food Festival. Last week was the crew from Stacks Espresso talking about coffee. It's where I first heard Mahmood Faiz from Mazadar explaining how much time and effort goes into his food at the restaurant. But some of our brightest culinary talents get featured on the show with Ray Graf, and it's always enlightening to hear people call in and ask their questions of these local experts. Deanna Fox is a perpetual favorite, but Ric Orlando, Rocco Defazio, Dora Swan, Josh Coletto, and other local luminaries have rocked that mic. Even better, if you miss the show, or want to hear them again, WAMC has the archives available online. One of these days, I may even call in with questions when it airs live. I just have to figure out a way to carve out the time.

Valley Free Radio is a fun, hip radio station that spits out all types of interesting, informative…read moreand just plain amazing shows. All of the DJs are volunteers and work on their own free time, without pay. I visited the studio last week during their radiothon and was pleasantly surprised with the shows J-Magic's Jambalaya (Where the Guitar is the Star) and Spoonful of Blues. Their commitment to providing free radio (ie free of commercials/ads) is really awesome and they are even available streaming online at www.valleyfreeradio.org. I listen on Tuesday nights, when the above mentioned programs are airing. I hope that VFR continues to be on the airwaves for years to come.

This Public Radio Station is in the middle of NY State. A small town off Rt 17. It covers the…read moreCatskills area of the state, and into northern PA. Its a community supported station, like they all are, but it is very specific to the area and very needed by the area. They do a ton of local news and events, and they have lots of local programming as well. Its hydro powered, really. You can see the actual hydro powering happening if you go to the station. Very cool. In addition to carrying the NPR stipples (Weekend Today, All Things Considered, etc.) they make space for local talent to cover books, music, farming, Fall Foliage and much much more. Its very homey, and if you go there to make a donation you can meet the "on air" staff, and watch them work. They also do local events, an annual auction, some farm to table dinners and more. This very small station has a very big impact. Keep up the good work.

I'm more of a food guy than a music guy…read more For anyone who knows me, that surely goes without saying. If left to my own devices, I'd listen to songs about buildings and food by Talking Heads, some early Dylan, a bunch of Tom Waits, and maybe a little bit of Motorhead to liven things up a bit. But much like I enjoy trying new food I also enjoy listening to new music. And much like I eschew mass produced food, factory farmed music holds little appeal. Thank goodness for 97.7 WEXT. There are a bunch of really great people involved with the station who follow music so that I don't have to. But one of the things I love most about this station is that every Sunday morning at 8am I can listen to Hello Pretty City and hear Laura's voice, and let the sonic wave she releases over the airwaves crash all around me. And should I miss any of her show, it's rebroadcast at 8pm.

When I found WNEW-FM 102.7 in early 70's I finally heard great sounds. Moving to Albany in 88' I found WEQX which was...102.7 FM. Another great station. Now radio (except for classical) in the capital district sucks. Until I heard WEXT. I've learned a lot about new, current music. Plus obscure older stuff from my days. And interesting, useful commentary. Truly a breath of fresh air on the dial. Give your flywheel tuning a spin to 106.1 it's the bees knees.

The nice thing is that the opinions and programming truly do seem to reflect the spectrum of opinions. Because I love to cook (and eat), we started our radio relationship with the Food Show. Lots of fascinating history of food and the science of food. Then we found a host of alternative music shows (Prog-Bog "music so progressive it hasn't been invented yet"); Mudcat Blues and Strictly Vinyl. We listen while we work in the garden or cook. Not a great deal of signal range, but that's OK for now.
