Soma contacted me right away and answered all my questions. I went to my first class and the vibe was very welcoming and friendly. The instructor Matt Strack was very informative and demonstrated the techniques very clearly. The other students are nice and helpful and don't try to injure you when you roll. This Jiu Jitsu is a little different from what I was learning back home but it's very legit, practical and effective. Before I forget the gym seems clean and well maintained.

I've been looking for Krav Maga classes for about a year now and wasn't able to find very much in…read morethe Dayton area, recently I found out that training is being offered and unlike other facilities in Dayton they offer only Krav Maga, not a blended form. For those of you who are curious, Krav Maga is a form of self defense / martial arts that orginated in Isreal in response to real world situations, it's still used today by the Isreali Defense Forces, law enforcement agencies, and military forces around the world, as well as for practical self defense for everyone. This particular training is held at the Dayton Jewish Community Center (the class is open to anyone however), currently sessions are on wednesdays from 7-8pm, a second training night is being considered. The founder and instructor Tim Tharp is very friendly and knowledgable, he made me feel very welcome. I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I arrived but after the initial waivers were signed I was encouraged to jump right into the class and start learning (the first class is free by the way!). In just the one class I learned a few very practical techniques that I could use in real world situations, this is what drew me to Krav Maga in the first place. While there are many forms of martial arts to choose from, I wanted one that was more than just earning belts and strict technique, Dayton Krav Maga has satisfied that requirement very well. Daniel is an amazing boxing coach as well an amazing mentor for anyone younger or older. He takes personal investment in your training, your goals and your fitness and this is something I value a lot. I greatly miss my days here and it's very disappointing I moved to where I can't attend the gym several times a week like I used too. As well the culture Daniel has built at his gym is one of a kind and is truly a family. Everyone is there to help you and to push you to be your best because everyone sees the potential in everyone. The self discipline I was taught has truly shaped me into the young man I am today, I know for a fact I wouldn't be the same person without boxing and especially without DMC Boxing Academy. Not to mention they keep their gym in extremely good shape with new equipment and everyone is taught to clean up after themselves and sanitize everything that you use. The gym was always clean and never smelled. I want to share a core memory of mine here which was getting into the ring, then throwing up (I made it to the toilet), and then getting right back in the ring and going at it again. Now this wasn't forced, but it's what I wanted, and that takes heart & self discipline, which again I wouldn't of had without this gym. I was invited by a friend to join her for the Saturday morning Mitts and Hits class. I had never…read moregone to a boxing class so I was very nervous and didn't have a clue what to expect. When I arrived I realized it's a legit boxing gym. No frills and no thrills. It's like out of an old boxing movie. However, the staff were really friendly and helpful. They had mitts and tape for me to use. (I recommend bringing your own if you have it) Ashley, one of the instructors, walked me step by step on how to wrap my hands and she give me a quick intro to some of the moves prior to the class beginning. I had an amazing workout and torched some serious calories. If you're looking to change up your fitness routine I highly suggest you give Drakes a try. (Bonus, the first class is free)

First night I show up they offer no free classes or a free trial, then before getting to know me the owner asked if I was interested in fighting in his charity fight, the whole thing smelled fishy. Next, on to when I actually got to spar. The "fighters" have zero self control and only aim for the head with about 100% of their power behind the punch, no wonder he needs volunteers to get beat up so bad. Everyone keeps getting injured sparring because there isn't any guidance or skill. The instructors told me very little about themselves so who knows if they have even been in a real boxing match themselves. Yet their training people on how to go into the ring and get beat up! Like I said, they offer a pretty good conditioning exercise but no real boxing technique except standing flat footed and brawling.
