Where to begin with Tanglewood? Well, let's see. When I lived there, I was on the second floor, and I had to constantly sweep birdseed off my porch from my upstairs neighbor's bird feeder, or else I'd be swarmed by birds who would leave presents all over my patio furniture. I complained more than once to the staff, but to my knowledge they never did anything to get them to stop. However, a friend of mine, who lives on the second floor of a different building of the complex, has a bird feeder and they were told within three days of having it that there would be fines if they didn't remove it immediately. Double-standards much? Also, when I wanted to go out to clean the birdseed off my porch, I had to hope that I was strong enough to do so, because it took a full-body effort to open my non-sliding sliding door. I asked maintenance to replace it or repair it multiple times, and all they did was spray some sort of lubricant in the track and say it was good. Yeah, it was good, if you feel like lifting the heavy glass door with all your might and hold it elevated while you slide it and then hope you don't drop it too hard.
Right before I left, the lock on the front door of the building stopped working and maintenance replaced it. Way to go, right? Wrong. As soon as they did, my key no longer worked in it. I called the office and they said they'd get someone to fix it. No one ever came, and I talked with other residents who had the same problem. To get into the building, we had to go around to the back door. Not that much of a hassle, I guess, unless you like walking through mud and snow, because, oh yeah, most of the back entrances don't have sidewalks! Then one day, as I was about to leave the building for the day, a neighbor used their key to get in the front door, and it worked. I asked how they did that, and they said they had to go to the office to get a new key made. So, while the staff kept saying they'd fix the lock so my key would work, that was apparently never the case, since a new key was going to be needed anyway. Thanks for letting me know that Tanglewood.
And, why is there mud? Because it rains! Simple premise, isn't it? Seems like the staff don't understand it, though, because the roofs of the buildings are full of holes and leak rainwater into the apartments next to the chimney. My apartment had multiple instances of rainwater dripping inside the ceiling, which causes the ceiling plaster and the paint on the wall next to it to become wet and discolored as rainwater drips through. Sometimes the paint gets bubbled, and if you press the bubble, it bursts and rainwater starts streaming down the wall onto the carpet. Awesome! The stains on the walls don't go away either. I had to have maintenance come out more than once to "repaint" the wall and ceiling, which just consists of a painter spraying some quick-dry paint on the stain and leaving before making sure that the stain is gone. Never mind about the warped and bubbled paint and plaster, I guess that's not in their job description.
With some of these issues, you might be tempted to think that this apartment complex can't be that expensive, since there are some fleabag motels with better conditions. But no, this seems to be one of the more expensive apartment complexes in the city. I think it has to do with being a part of the Richdale group, which has multiple complexes across the city. At least one of them actually is very nice, but it's like Richdale thinks that all of its complexes should be priced to the standard of the one that is worth it. If you come to live at Tanglewood, expect to pay over six hundred fifty for a one bedroom apartment, which doesn't include water (what apartment doesn't include at least water in the rent? This one, that's what), electricity, gas, internet, or cable beyond the most basic you can get. You also have to pay fifty extra for a garage if you want it. Plus, they raise the rent EVERY YEAR, so that if you've been there for awhile, it becomes too expensive to stay. I think they want to get a high turnover rate or something. Basically, if you've been there for a few years, this apartment complex is going to suck eight hundred OR MORE dollars out of your wallet every month. You'd think they'd use some of that money to fix up their facilities, but they must just stockpile it under the clubhouse somewhere and swim through it like Scrooge McDuck, because nothing ever seems to get better, only worse.
Bottom line, find somewhere else to live, a place where you can get a two-bedroom apartment with paid utilities for less money a month than you would pay simply for rent for a one-bedroom at Tanglewood. read more
