Down the steps is a quaint little cafe which has bright music and nice charm. The menu provides what every brunch-seeker desires - sweet and savory. The cappuccino and lattes were made with a skillful Italian hand by the magistrate herself. I ordered the toasted whole grain bagel with crispy bacon and scrambled eggs. The side salad of arugula was simple and fresh. The bagel and bacon could have been a bit crisper but were expertly prepared and delicious. The eggs were fluffy and nice.Silvia Colloca would approve. The Fresca salad was extremely fresh and with an austere sprinkle of olive oil was crisp and lovely. Would I have minded a hint of citrus vinaigrette - not at all but this is Italian simplicity. The pancakes with pistachio cream and raspberry couilis was luxurious; the pistachio concoction seemed to be Nutella with smoothly ground fresh pistachio - a confectionary triumph! The Nutella pancakes with whip cream and strawberries was very satisfying and cleared completely by the little one.

Needed to find a place close to the train stop for breakfast, and this place seemed cute! It's a bit hard to find, but it's off Hanover St. And it's BELOW a building. So keep an eye out for the signs that says "Downstairs". Once in, the cafe has about seven tables, we sat all the way in the back. They have a good breakfast menu, omelettes, full breakfasts, pancakes, as well as a lunch menu with sandwiches and paninis. We had the basil omelette and blueberry pancakes. My friends said their full breakfast was the best they'd had so far in Edinburgh.

Breakfast roll with haggis, black pudding, eggs, and grilled tomato.

The food is absolutely delicious. It's perfect if you want to try a Scottish breakfast. The haggis is really tasty and I loved the Italian chocolate.

Once I came here (this was about 10 months ago) and had the most wonderful, flavourful meatball hero that was simply divine. Sadly, since this trip so many months ago, this has never been replicated. Tani Modi is a cute little sandwich shop/ cafe famous for its meatball hero. My issue is that this cafe gets busy at lunchtimes and their ability to cope is evident in the quality of the hero received. I find that at busy times my hero will be sloppy, cheese not entirely melted and overall is executed in a messy way. Go after lunch and you'll see the love and care taken to prepare the sandwich that will be well balanced between the bread, meatball and melted cheese. When done well, this sandwich is delicious. Coffee is ok, and there are some sweet baked treats to get you through the 3pm slump. They also do breakfasts and salads. Staff are really friendly, there is free WiFi in the basement and ample seating- though it's usually packed at lunchtime so it might be a struggle to get a table.

See that gluten free carrot cake in the far front left corner? That ish is mine! :D

This adorbs little undergound Italian deli saved our lives. The boyfriend was incredibly hangry. I was on the verge of a similar emotional hunger meltdown. We swerved in; bluebear was too far to walk. We were too far gone. The food is so solid. The staff is super friendly. The ambiance is informal and very italian. The relationship between hungry human and food is very natural. It has an open kitchen, which makes it feel like you're in an Italian household, being forcefed too much delicious food by someone's tenacious nona. Aaaannnddd... there is a ton of gluten free stuff. Their gf cakes are incredible... by any standard. A hidden gem, if I ever saw one.

Cozy breakfast on the way to the train station. Good service and food was well done. Thy have a nice selection of deserts for the sweettooth. The much menu looked great. I was really disappointed I couldn't try a sandwich as the Italian sandwiches sounded good. So would I go back, yes! Service was very good for a very busy weekend morning.

Awesome little family owned cafe/deli tucked in below street level. Great americano, great fresh-made panini. ok wifi ;~)

Really well done breakfast, lunch brunch place. Fresh ingredients, cosy environment and friendly service. Very much like your mom pop restaurants. We ordered a ham & cheese omelette, ham Parma panini, Salami Milano pesto panini and a spinach soup. All four things were lovely. It's next to Urban Angel, but I believe it's more authentic and no nonsense straight up good food that hits the spot and leaves you feeling healthy and not bloated. Highly recommended!

    Great place!

The Edinburgh Larder was the answer. We arrived right at opening. We were seated immediately and the place is casual clean and welcoming. The service was excellent and I got the traditional Scottish breakfast. Haggis and all and it was excellent, filing and worth walking in the light mist. The Mushroom Toast was very tasty according to my wife. The place is small and part of the larger establishment next door but still the same great food. The server is very friendly and I ordered full Scottish breakfast to try out everything and chai latte. It came fairly fast and it was a very full dish. I tried all the food and they are all yummy. The blood pudding is not quite my favorite. And the bean with the red sauce is a little too spicy for me. But overall it is very good. Chai latte is super yummy and not overly sweet!

Slotted in on Rose Street, at the back of the huge and imposing columned Dome buiding, this gorgeous little city-centre oasis is the perfect place to rest your shopping-weary feet and have a tasty lunch. It's only open from april to early september, and although it's tucked down a narrow street this place is a great little suntrap. You can get wraps, salads, soups, burgers, that sort of thing here - not a full á la carte lunch, but the portions are fairly generous so you'll only need one course. The service was ok, but our waiter didn't even bother to bring us our change back. We had been planning to leave it as a tip for him, but we thought it was a bit cheeky of him just to assume, especially when service is already included in the prices. For a salad and a soft drink you'll spend just over £10 a head, which makes it slightly pricier than a lot of other lunchtime cafés nearby, but this setting is just so gorgeous I'd happily pay the difference.

I adored the lime, poppyseed, and blueberry roulade! It was gone before the soup and toastie sandwich arrived. Crispy on the outside and so very soft and tasty on the inside. The cookie pie was impressive, but I honestly liked the roulade so much better. The soup today was broccoli and it was delicious! I had a ham and cheese sandwich lightly grilled in a panini press. Mom had a chorizo sandwich. The ladies at the bakery were lovely! Friendly happy folk always make food taste better! The bakery was quiet and not busy at 12:30 pm. It wasn't empty, just not busy. But, we were determined to get all those stamps (and the satisfaction of having accomplished something that was specific to Edinburgh), so this was the first of two coffee shops visited in the space of an hour. Crazy? Yes, indeed. I really liked the feel of this shop. It's open, clean and bright. It's about on par, size-wise, as some of the other shops we visited, but it wasn't as busy. There were two guys working the counter when we arrived, and they had several tables open, which we took advantage of. We ordered our drinks and sat down to wait. They came out quickly, and they were delicious. The guy who brought our coffee to the table was very friendly, checking to make sure that we were set, that we had everything we needed, and that we knew they had fresh-baked pastries at the counter. I was interested in the pastries but knew that we had one more coffee shop to visit before really starting our day, so I had to abstain. The coffee was delicious - well brewed and served piping hot. I could see making this place into a normal haunt, if we were in the area more often.
