The day of my appointment I arrived dutifully 15 minutes early, checked in and waited in the lobby as instructed. At exactly the scheduled time for my appointment to begin, I was told that the NP was leaving for the day, would not have time to see me and that I would need to reschedule. No one else would be available to see me, so I was told, even if I were willing to wait. After leaving, very upset that my asthma issues were still not to be addressed, I chose to call a different local physician's office, not part of the Mount Nittany Group. There, the receptionist expressed her concern for my issues, and immediately scheduled me for the very next morning with the lead physician. Guess which office I'll go back to...

I was referred to Dr. Phillip A. Miller for OMT for chronic sinus issues, widespread bone and joint…read morepain, and possible fibromyalgia. I did not find Dr. Miller's communication style effective due to his talking so fast that I frequently had to ask him to repeat what he was saying. It sounded like gibberish at times. Instead of gentle manipulation, Dr. Miller's treatments were harsh and jerky, similar to chiropractic manipulations. He did not always indicate what he was doing or prepare me for these sudden, violent jerks. I clearly expressed pain during treatment and was told to "hold on" and that he knew how it felt because he'd had the same manipulations done himself. At no time did he pause, ask if I needed a break, or inquire about the applied pressure as most practitioners routinely do. In fact, he induced an extremely painful headache by pressing down relentlessly hard on my face as I clearly expressed pain and struggled under the weight of his hands. He was not responsive to me during or after the treatment regarding my discomfort and pain. Immediately after the session, he asked me to walk around in the exam room and see if I felt better. I told him I did not feel any improvement in my pain. I left with new areas of pain in my neck and lower back. When I checked his report from my appointment, I noted that he said I tolerated the treatment well and indicated improvement. I was understandably upset to see a complete fabrication of the events during my visit. I reached out to my primary care physician (who was not in the office that day) via the patient portal system to let her know what happened, and was contacted by Dr. Miller's practice manager. Despite being "encouraged" by both his practice manager and director, Dr. Miller never appropriately addressed my concerns. He did post two unsatisfactory attempts at an addendum that still fell short of the truth. In my opinion, Dr. Miller's bedside manner, communication, and treatment approach failed miserably in accuracy, transparency, and compassionate care.

I went, and was very happily surprised. The office is easy to find, parking is sufficient, and the inside is very clean and modern. During the current Covid pandemic, patient safety is obviously a high priority as well, with a quick phone interview asking relevant questions, and a temperature checks at your car before you enter the building. All the hygienists we've seen are very friendly and courteous, answering any questions you have. They're also great with kids, as our daughter has gone for the past 4 years and loves it. Having a toddler eager to go to the dentist is not an experience I've heard from others very often, but ours is, which is a testament to their care. One other review mentioned that Dr. Anderton has turned into a greedy businesswoman, due to her not taking the insurance anymore (I assume it's the Penn State dental insurance). I know a little about the situation, and it's definitely not her fault. The issue, as I understand it, is that the insurance changed to require dentists to use some material for cavity fillings that tend to degrade, while Dr. Anderton insists on using high-quality fillings. That led to her not being accepted into the network. However, you can still be reimbursed from an HSA if you have one. In short, Dr. Anderton is the best dentist me, or my family, has ever had, and we'll be her happy patients for as long as we can.

During appointments, I had to ask two different dentists and a dental assistant to stop touching and patting me throughout treatment. It was not a single incidental touch, but continuous unnecessary physical contact on my arm or shoulder, which was highly unusual and felt invasive. A hygienist also used my chest as a resting surface for her instruments, dropping tools onto it repeatedly during cleaning. I found the experience physically uncomfortable and jarring. I continued going there for several years because, to their credit, they eventually noted my discomfort in my chart and the unwanted touching stopped. However, at my last appointment I was 7 minutes late because of an unexpected domestic issue that arose as I was leaving the house. I called ahead to let them know. When I arrived, I was told they could no longer see me as a patient because I was "always" late, which was simply untrue. I had often arrived on time and had also waited 20 to 30 minutes for the office when it was running behind, including one occasion when the wait was closer to 40 minutes. What felt especially unfair was that I was never given any warning about lateness policies before being abruptly dismissed from the practice after arriving for my appointment. There were no prior conversations, notices, or written warnings in their appointment communications. Being refused treatment and permanently dropped as a patient on the spot over being 7 minutes late was disproportionately harsh and humiliating. A basic courtesy conversation or warning beforehand would have made the situation feel far less unnecessarily severe. Overall, I found the practice disrespectful of personal boundaries and needlessly punishing toward me as a longtime patient.

I had thought that Penn State Health accepted Medicare for full payment for services at this clinic. Wrong. I went to a Podiatrist to have my toe nails cut and requested Topical medication to cure toe nail fungus. The Doctor was great and addressed my medical needs. She spent about 20 minutes with me and had a prescription called in to my Pharmacy. Several Weeks later I get a bill for $359 for her services. Medicare covered $244 and I got a bill for $114.00. I went to their office and asked if I could get installment payments. I am living on Social Security. They told me to contact their Hershey office about payments. The woman that took my call at Hershey said that if the amount is under $200 they don't ACCEPT installment payments. She sent me some forms to fill out requesting to have my balance written off by Penn State. The forms they sent me were ridiculous. They wanted me to mail them copies of my last 4 bank statements in addition to another bunch of BS. NO way i would do that instead of just sending them installment payments. My account numbers is none of their business. As far as I know, they MUST accept installment payments by law. So guess how much they are getting? Anything Penn State is a RIP OFF. From their tuition to parking, to anything Penn State, RIP OFF. Find a different Podiatrist and save yourself a headache. Penn State Health is for rich people.

We decided to try out a medication which I would later find out I was allergic to. When going off that, I asked for another medication I have been prescribed for 6+ years. He quickly refused (which I think was in fear of his reputation and job) and didn't offer much explanation. Very discouraging experience. They offered to refer me to someone who might be willing to prescribe the medication, but I made the decision to go off all medication and prioritize therapy. Not worth jumping through all the hoops these people set up for you. Especially when one day, they just decide you can't have it anymore :) Overall I found the intake process very easy, and communicating with my psychiatrist was not a problem. From a human perspective though, I think they care more about claiming your insurance money than your mental health. If you are in need of a locally practicing psychiatrist who can prescribe unscheduled medication for you, like antidepressants, this will probably work fine for you. If you have more serious medication needs I recommend looking elsewhere, as they will not take you seriously.
