The facilities were super nice, the mats were clean and in great shape (despite the street construction which necessitated the front of the building be boarded up, so you may need to enter through the back). It got to be too many kids and not enough instructors or adequate supervision for their summer program. My kids got to a point where they dreaded going to class, which is when I knew it was time to stop going. We took them to several other Gracie Barra locations but they didn't enjoy the instructors so I thought we were done with Jiu Jitsu until we found Total Jui Jitsu. To our surprise, we found that a lot of the coaches and families also left Gracie Barra in Burbank for the same reasons and so my boys knew a lot of the kids in the class. Great kids and wonderful families. The Total Jui Jitsu coaches aren't yellers, which creates a really chill environment and there is serious focus on good form, respect, and execution. All the things I expect and they over-deliver in each and every class. They won't allow kids to get distracted and ensure they are truly learning the techniques the right way. If they see a child performing the moves incorrectly, they immediately step in to coach and correct so the kids don't injure themselves or others. The kids really respond to the coaches' positive and encouraging approach and I can definitely see it in my boys faces after class; they beam with pride. I am so thrilled that they were able to rekindle the love of Jui Jitsu. It's located in the same plaza as Monstera tea. If you navigate to the address there is no entrance to the parking lot from that street. Rather, look for Monstera Tea and park there and walk to Legacy at the corner end of the shopping center. The plaza is across the street from Aurora which is hard to miss. We were initially given a price, but just a few days later, when we went to sign up, the price had increased by $30/month. Not a huge deal, but I would have appreciated more transparency upfront. It was a surprise to us; I doubt if they were planning anything in the next couple days that the person in charge wouldn't know. You don't just walk around giving random numbers to your new potential guests. Again, no big deal, we get it. The bigger issue was their cancellation/refund policy. We paid nearly $200 upfront for an entire month but, due to personal reasons, never attended even a single day. We notified them and were asked to send an email to cancel, which we did. We were then told that because the payment had already been made, they would keep the entire amount and only offer to hold the funds for future use. We clearly stated we will no longer be members. EVER. We weren't even asking for a full refund--just a reasonable prorated refund, especially since no services were rendered. I also spoke with "Zhanet,"who asked me to send the emails and said she would look into it. She initially seemed concerned about the situation and was surprised no refund was processed, but unfortunately, I never received any follow-up. I understand they are expanding and doing construction, but that shouldn't come at the expense of transparency and reasonable customer service. There are other establishments nearby that offer more flexible options, and in hindsight, I wish I had shopped around. That said, Lucine, the instructor, was very sweet and professional. This review is strictly about how the business handled the financial/cancellation situation.
