I enjoy cooking and baking, but I don't like having to use specialty equipment. And I already have everything I need for my kitchen, so this place didn't interest me too much. However, my mom was on a mission to find molds to make her own Banh Khot (savoury mini Vietnamese pancakes) and she found them at Tap Phong. In fact, they had several different types for her to chose from. Yay! I'm hoping she'll invite me over when she makes some, lol ;) Service is not the nicest, but whatever. Tap Phong Trading Company has been around for years and in my opinion one of the best places to pick up both for home (plates, rice cookers, knives) and restaurants (massive stock pots, commercial grade taikoyaki makers, industrial grade slicers etc..)  No matter what your kitchen needs are they will most likely stock it and if they don't stock it, they most likely can get it for you. The store is packed and aisles are narrow.  Workers are constantly stocking the store so you need to squeeze past them at times. In this day of online shopping, I love coming here as I get to actually see and feel the product before I buy it.  Prices are super reasonable compared to online so for me it's a no brainer to come here to buy. Do note there is no refund for returns but you can exchange your items within 10 days. 4 out of 5 for an old school shopping experience! read more

Even with the pay parking, annoying dt traffic, I have become a fan of Tap Phong. I had enquired via email regarding fushia Chinese teacups and received a response very promptly. The place was huge...I think my mom or any house owner would love to browse around. The prices were excellent as well. They really had everything you'd need in the kitchen. Tap Phong also had a section for 'dead ppl'. The things you burn for the dead, etc. (it's a Chinese thing). I even found some mini Chinese teacups and thought omggggg how cute!!! But they are in the 'death' section... I guess it's meant for the ancesters and not drinking :) I was able to find a few Chinese teasets. They were SOOOO FRUGAL :D The best set was the gold & white dragon & phoenix ($26.99). The traditional fushia longevity set was $19.99 (good price but not that vibrant in colour). I ended up purchasing eight $ 1 fushia teacups for my Chinese tea ceremony. Hoping my bms will break these instead of my real set if they happen to be rushing about. Can't get over how they are only $ 1. The cheapest I found uptown was $ 1.99. I will definitely come back here again ! read more

I purchased some items here for about $50 and it would cost me about $70 in Ottawa. Honestly I could spend all day in here browsing for things I need for my kitchen but that would be way to much fun and would kill my day. I'll be back to purchase more things in the future. I've been shopping at Tap Phong for ages. The large store is located in Chinatown near Kensington market. They have pretty much all the kitchen supplies you need for your kitchen or if you own a business. They have beautiful dishes, containers, strainers, chopping boards, rice cookers, utensils, knives...you name it, they will likely have it. I even got beautiful Chinese ceramic vases from the store. The place is huge with lots of helpers if you need their assistance. Going through the aisles is tight with tons of customers walking through. My latest purchases included stainless steel roasting pans, sheet pans and lasagne pans which are tough to find in the city. I went to Kitchen Stuff Plus and other stores first before venturing off to Tap Phong. It should have been my first stop. Prices were reasonable for the items I bought. read more

On Spadina, in the Chinatown area, you will find this shop. Very much designed like many shops, packed full of stuff! That being said, this is one of the bigger stores in the area. It has a rhyme and reason to the placement of things. I swear, you will figure it out! The only thing is the time it will take you to look through everything. Fortunately, I love this! It feels like a restaurant supply store. Whatever you would need to set your table or start a restaurant - even the plastic trays from cafeterias you can buy here. Not only only in various colours but sizes too! There's a section of bamboo, wicker this and that as well as colourful tea sets. Prices are incredibly cheap! Be careful before you leave the store that your charge is accurate and you have your products! They overcharged me and refused to fix it. I work for a large company we have brought thousands of dollars of business as a food manufacturer for trade shows but will not continue to purchase from them. I bought $250 on this one trip to their store and they refused to fix an error on their part for about $8. I am fine with the $8 my company was overcharged but it was the principle. My chef instructor in Geroge Brown recommends this store to us. So I went to this store right after my first class of Bakery Arts course, and omg, this store is a heaven for me. They have mostly everything I need for my courses, and more. I bought some other things for my home as well. Aisles are quite narrow, items on racks are quite messy... I made the mistake of walking in here one day, thinking that it was just another multi-purpose Dollarama-esque store, but boy was I wrong. I mean, do you really need a package of 100 appetizer picks hand cut into your choice of little umbrellas, seahorses or violins for $2.99? Of course you don't, but you know what? That shit is hella cute, so into your basket they go. Truth is, I can spend hours in here filing through everything they have. Given the chance, I would absolutely love to spend a night in here and probably could by setting up a bed in the gargantuan 100 serving wok in the corner of the store (which by the by is available at the low, low price of $179 in case anyone is interested) Best. TP has been part of the furniture in Chinatown for decades and continues to be the warehouse for both residents and restaurateurs in the area carrying all the goods for cooking with some must-have hardware kicking around for good measure. The service is stellar too, even if your native tongue is only English. Need a soy sauce jar like I did recently? You have many to choose from. In fact I liked the one I was using at the noodle house nearby and sure enough, there it was on the shelf for under $3. Need a commercial deep fryer? They have that too. Plus an interesting array of Japanese knives at the til. I like looking at the electric kitchen appliances they stock. Cool stuff, like a $1500 blender and brands that I didn't realize even made the appliances they had there. The impression I get is that they stock these particular items because they work well and do the job, not because of some contractual obligation to carry them. It's a fun place to window shop, although the aisles are narrow, as you can spot most of the items seen in nearby restaurants. I bought my cast iron wok at TP decades ago and it still is my fav. Got an 8' chef knife(global) for my girlfriend and she absolutely loved it almost got her the 6 but luckily the lady at the counter knew that bigger was better. IF I ever open a family run ASIAN restaurant, this is where I will stock up on kitchen equipment and supplies. I went in here with a specific MISSION and was not disappointed. It did take a couple LAPS to find exactly what I wanted instead of going with a secondary option when I thought it wasn't available. I had lots of TIME which meant 'Kid in a Candy Store' shopping happiness. I started to imagine how I would use each and every item in the shop. At some time I even did more laps to DISCOVER things I normally don't find from places such as Kitchen Stuff Plus or Home Outfitters. It's in a great area of town too nearby both China Town and Kensington Market where you can get inspirations before or after. Tap Phong = Organized Chaos... and I totally get it! One stop shop for cooking and dining supplies (and some bath) if you're hosting a party, moved to a new place or have a chinese restaurant... Or if you just want to throw away everything you have then replace them with the cool stuff you see at Tap Phong. They pretty inexpensive. Don't forget to look up, especially in the take away container aisle... They 'catalogue' all the containers they sell on the top shelf. Best finds: Umbra adjustable (tension) curtain rod Plastic 2oz take away sauce containers with lids Mini dessert spoons Skewers... The nice sturdy kind The aisles are tight and the shelves are full to the brim. It looks chaotic, but they're categorized or just ask someone for help. After getting a cooking class as a gift certificate at a local trade school I was expecting my reasonable cooking gadgets repertoire to carry me through some of the sessions. Yet some things are not meant to be (like the gifts that require one to spend $$$ before they keep on giving :) after the first session I was on the look out for a whole bunch of items. I went through some main stream stores yet some of the items I had to purchase are for professionals so they required a store that sold items that are for pros. Interestingly the college itself recommends this store. This is by no means a glamorous store and its actually quite hard to navigate (I am surprised they pass the safety inspections) but boy they carry the everything including the kitchen sink (pun intended) Prices for some items are good while the brand name items being in the same price range as other stores. The staff is not very helpful and you have to really press them for info. If you don't know what you are looking for you can spend a lot of time here to get the right item. There seems to be a method to the madness as after spending half an hour or so I kind of figured out how this place is organised, yet I will be at a complete loss if I wanted a very specific item without any assistance. The low cost items need to be checked thoroughly as they might fail even before you leave the store. However the cost/performance proposition makes it a place if you are looking for kitchen gear and don't want to spend a fortune. read more

It's like a flea market threw up all the dishware you'd find in a Chinese restaurant. Everywhere you look, floor to ceiling, there's stuff. Lots of...stuff! Glassware, pots, gadgets galore... plastic bowls that I recognize from every ghetto asian noodle house I've ever been to (you know those bowls with that red pattern with the mini swirls). This place has everything you need for a kitchen at reasonable prices. The selection of unboxed dishware is extensive. Plain drinking glasses, latte glasses, shot glasses, tea cups, coffee cups, etc. you get the idea. If you break something, you can always come back and buy a replacement cup! A bonus for clumsy people like me! Note#1: Don't expect a lot of help if you have questions. The staff speak limited English. You might not get too far with words like "ramekin" or even "spatula". But they will do their best to help you. Note#2: Don't get in the way of old Chinese people shopping. Grunting is acceptable instead of "Excuse me". Pushing and shoving is just another way of saying "Sorry, I need to pass." Also, if you are one of those shoppers who has a kid that you push around in a giant stroller, do everyone a favor...find a babysitter. This isn't the place to take them. There are breakable bits everywhere and narrow lanes. Don't take this the wrong way but...your baby isn't cute, you aren't cute, don't get in the way of people who need to get errands done.
