On a trip away with work in Dorchester I stumbled across this little hole-in-the-wall. You go in…read moreand it looks tiny, largely, because it is tiny. I was taken downstairs - where the main seating area and instantly liked the atmosphere. It is a well decorated and lit cavern - as the name suggest. But unlike the name suggests it is very small. Not small cramped, but small cosy. One thing I especially liked about this was that they stock delicious local ale - I had a lovely ale called 'piddle' to which the waitress joked 'piddle in a bottle'. This amused her more than it did me in fairness. The food was delicious, I had a crab and salmon pasta that was really delicious. They also brought free bread with oils, olives and (oddly) radish. I like free stuff so this got them points with me. If I could complain about one thing it's that the service was not quite perfect. They clearly had a new girl starting and it was strange to hear her being told off for cutting me too much bread - "he's just by himself you'll ruin his appetite with that much bread" I heard across the small restaurant. This was more funny than it was rude, but perhaps I was slightly annoyed at the motherly implication that I can't manage my own appetite ,which I have been doing successfully for almost 2 decades now! Best part of all this, my beer and delicious main course cost only £15. I'd recommend this place highly. I went on a Thursday night and loved the atmosphere, so I imagine on a Friday or Saturday night it would be excellent.

This has been a fav place for birthdays and romantic dates for years, still never fails to impress…read more Good quality ingredients make the delicious Italian/Sicilian meals delicious. And if you're lucky you might get to see a flash of the hot blooded chef's anger, always makes for good entertainment. Still doing well against all the mainstream competition it now has to fight customers over. Great value for money, yes it's a little more than your bog standard Italian... but this is far from standard food! You will need to book on weekends and you should know that this place is all downstairs in a cavern, so you need to be OK with enclosed areas. It's snug and private, great for couples, or book out the whole cavern and have a big party! The owners will no doubt party with you till the wee hours!

Sienna located on Dorchester High Street is a small 16 seater 1 Michelin star restaurant in Dorset…read more The current chef owner is a former Masterchef semi-finalist who took over the restaurant in April 2015. During a recent trip to Dorset we decided to drop by for lunch. To start we opted for the scallops and sweetbread. The broth in the scallop starter was overly salty. The accompanying shiitake mushrooms were rehydrated. Normally the stem is discarded being tough and chewy, however at Sienna the shiitake mushrooms were served with the stem. For mains we ordered the iberico pork and halibut. Both mains were again extremely salty and unappetising. Plating of both mains was uncreative no different from simple high street pub food. The sweetbread starter served with watermelon, peas and girolles was the only dish that we enjoyed. The flavours went well and presentation was closer to the level one would expect from a Michelin rated restaurant. Given a mostly disappointing meal we decided to skip dessert. If the dishes we tried are a true representation of the best that the new chef can produce, it will be interesting to see whether Sienna will retain their one Michelin star.

If ever a place deserved 5 stars, it'll be this place. In a town so devoid of decent places to eat,…read moreSienna continues to set the benchmark for good food. The restaurant itself is a bit of an oddity - awarded 3 AA rosettes last year, but only seating about 18 or so covers (and that's cosy) I still can't work out how a place like this functions. I guess because it's run by a very charming husband and wife team there's good quality control. You'll never be short of good service and if you go for a three course meal, expect the works. Petit fours, homemade bread, everything. As you'd expect for a restaurant of this standard you choose from a set menu which, if I remember correctly is £20 for a two course lunch and around £30 for a three course dinner. Considering the extras you get when you eat here, I think the prices are very reasonable, so expect the works and perfection I hate to pigeon hole a place, but this is reserved as a special place for me. Somewhere you'd take the girlfriend or someone you're trying to impress - or if you're in town on business with an expense account. Again, they'll hate me for saying this, but don't come here if you're in a rush. Food this good has to be savored.
