I'm appalled just thinking about the expirience I had at the Andrew Late , I mean Andrew Fate , I mean Andrew gate , I mean Andrew Tate art museum. When I took a single step into the museum I was splashed in the face with Andrew Tates semen when I had my mouth open. I asked why the worker did that and they replied "It's just apart of the experience". I continued and at the cafe they had Andrew Tate came on the mike and said here's our band lemonade mouth. the music was good but the band went crazy. The guitarist kept taking swigs of my drink and saying "your okay with mono right?" I'm not And in top of that the drummer spit in my eyes IT BuRNED. then to top it of it all I had a HEART ATTACK due to my heart problems. Every one turned and asked around who knows cpr . Andrew Tate responded "I do" then when people were demanding he save me he said "no". And his reason was that he's not gay. Overall it was fucking sick I loved it. read more

Interesting space, granted. Good gift shop w/ lots of fun books. While we didn't see all the art, what we did see wasn't to my taste/ liking. Highlight was the light/ sound art show in the boiler hall. Spent most of our time in the Switch. The view from 10th floor is quite nice, but forget about using elevators anywhere between 9-5. There are elevators that serve only 1-4 also, but again, not super convenient to use. read more

Tate Modern has a spectacular view of the Thames River and Millennium Bridge. It houses various international modern and contemporary artworks. It appeared to have a younger crowd. Some of the piece were actually interesting. The paintings, sculptures and compilations were mostly thought provoking works of abstract art. The gallery is free / give-what-you-can. Not a bad way to spend an hour. read more

I love the Tate Modern so much! While the collection isn't vast, it's great and what's on display changes quite often. The Tate Modern can be tackled in less than an hour (but art lovers like myself will probably want to allow a bit more time to peruse the facility). You can easily hop inside and take a peek at just a few works and be in and out in less than 15 minutes. The museum has free admission to the main gallery areas (films, special exhibitions and events have an admission fee), but it's polite to drop a few pounds in the collection boxes located around the museum. I was surprised to find some American abstract expressionist artists' work featured, including a breathtaking Jackson Pollock hanging right next to a Lee Krasner (come on art nerds, I know you are as giddy about this as I am)! The other big boys are here too, from Joan Miro, Edward Degas and Ashille Gorky to Franz Kline, Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney. There's an exceptional exhibition space for up and coming modern artists too. I've found new works to admire during each and every visit I've made here. Make sure you leave a little time to browse the fantastic museum gift shop. The view from the shop's tall glass windows is worthy of a photo stop. The Jubilee station is the closest Tube stop for the museum. Honestly, how can you beat a museum that's FREE and open to the public? If you're in London, you have no excuse. The Tate Modern is the sort of place that makes you swell inside and think "Isn't London a ridiculously lovely city?" It's the kind of museum that'll allow epiphanies like the one I had there once passing by a steel sculpture: That looks like a Richard Serra. That IS a Richard Serra! A trip to the Tate makes the Contemporary Art and Lesbian Art and Theory classes I took in undergrad come alive. (And makes me wish I'd taken more art history when I had the chance!) Best of all, admission is free so you can browse at your leisure, and as often as you want. The Tate Modern is among my favorite museums in the world. It's one of the best ways you can spend a few hours in London. read more

I've always wanted to visit this museum and I can finally check it off my list. I love that a lot of the museums in London are FREE! Donations are happily accepted of course. How cool is it that all people of different ages and backgrounds are encouraged to experience art & culture?! There were some lovely, funky, creepy installations/paintings/art - just what I was hoping for. The weirder the better. I hope they finish the front swings area soon. It was mostly blocked off when we visited. The multiple gift shops on the different floors of the museum are great. They carry a bunch of postcards. I liked the pillows featuring currently displayed art. Be prepared to have your bags searched at all the entrances. We visited the Borough Market first thing in the morning to eat and then we walked to the Tate Modern. It's not far. Halfway through our museum visit, I took a nap on the grass lawn by the river. Bring a jacket or a picnic blanket to lie on. Wish they had better maintained grass out there, but it was still nice. A mix of working adults, teenagers, and parents with small kids were all out on the grass. There were beer and snack bars outside. The museum was part of a great day in the city. read more

I consider myself an "artsy person" and have a large appreciation for many different types of art. With that said, this museum, while internationally acclaimed, will stretch your limits of "art" to the maximum. I love the building. It's so unique in its airy-ness and little nooks. If you need a break, be sure to snag a seat on the top floor, which has large comfy chairs. There is a lot here that is free - but beware that there will be special exhibits that cost more money - but I really had a hard time connecting with the vast majority of the art here. Maybe it was just and off season for me. Of course you should visit this museum, but just beware that it is very challenging and might not be particularly "rewarding" or, in my experience, thought provoking. read more

This is a very large museum. It contains international and modern contemporary art exhibitions it has free displays and events daily. Don't skimp on the map if you have never been here before and didn't come to see something specific. If you want to just browse around that can be a very helpful purchase. You may want to take multiple trips here or take a midday break if you want to appreciate everything here. Also, take advantage of the observation deck on a nice day, this is a lovely place to take in some of the London scenery at a high viewpoint. I can't say too much about the exhibitions as these do change regularly and I don't want this review to fall irrelevant. But I trust that as time goes on all of the exhibitions will be of the same quality and attraction as they always are. read more

The Tate Modern is my new favorite that I wish I knew about earlier. Located in the Southwest end of town, the Tate is a museum with a new, refreshing flavor. I can't lie, sometimes I'm not exactly thrilled to go to history museums but the Tate puts a spin on the classic museum. I don't recall being bored for even the slightest second. After you're done roaming the exhibitions, head to the fourth floor and over the bridge to access the Tate's rooftop terrace. Here's where the fun happens. Take the elevator up to the top floor for 360 views of South London. The view is stunning and is best enjoyed with a cup of tea or a wine in hand from their cafe. The museum is free to enter so this view is too. Money Saving Tip: If you're 16 - 25, sign up for the Tate Collective to get £5 admission into exhibitions and 20% of all food & drink. YAS! read more

Outstanding spaces and very interesting Art! We were there on a weekday around 11 am or so. Tate Modern has fabulous spaces starting with the huge Atrium on both sides of which were exhibits on many floors. Plus one side of the building had a viewing deck on the 10th floor from where you could see 360 degrees around London. Thames River, St.Paul's Cathedral, etc. Will definteley be back again. Fantastic experience!! read more

A short walk over the Millennium Bridge from Cannon Street or Mansion House, or if you're daring a short walk from Southwark, the Tate Modern requires a certain amount of waking to get there. Once you're in, some of the exhibits halls are free and some are not. Absolutely pony up the £3.50 for the audio tour guide. Unless you've got a masters degree in Art, there's no other way to know that the 9 tiles in the abstract piece Mediteraneé represent the sun and the sand and the ground and the sky. Although if you stare at it long enough, who knows what you will decide it means. The displays and exhibits tend to change, with some famous artists collected works coming and going every couple of months. If you're up to spending a few quid for one of those exhibitions, you'll want to check the Tate website for a schedule. Otherwise, the free exhibits are just fine for a couple of hours and I think are just as good. read more

Still my favorite museum in the U.K. I always thought there was something about the California Academy of Sciences that reminded me of the Tate but I think I might be wrong about my first impression. This revisit was focused on Mark Rothko. His painting for the Four Seasons remain thought provoking and dark as ever. Tate current exhibits focused on three Chinese artists. Unusual. One of which is Cao Fei's film on Chinese workers, Whose Utopia (google it). It was captivating. On the fourth floor, you get a spectacular view of the bridge crossing River Thames. There is an area where you can do your art work and get saved on flickr, projected onto the screen and get a digital copy after. Don't let your inner artist go unnoticed. As a traveler, Tate Modern and MoMa have greater in common than its younger sibling, SFMOMA, which is much more cramped in its original setting, before the remodeling. But I have untrained eyes. So I could be wrong. Both Tate and MoMa offer modern and contemporary art. It has a lot of great exhibits. I saw some rotations that I saw in the SFMOMA and then in MOMA and now they are in display at Tate. I like the history behind the building. The location is superb. I remember when I first discovered it one year after visiting the farmer's market nearby. I did not know that I had stumbled onto a treasure trove. I was still puzzled by why it reminded me of California Academy of Sciences in the Golden Gate Park. But then it dawned on me that it has a very airy feel to it. Both places had that. And of course GGP is very European. And at the time when I had become a member to CAS, right after its reopening, I had just returned from UK and I was clinging onto anything and everything that reminded me of Tate Modern. Do not miss. he first impression of Tate Modern is wow, what an amazing building with its graham cracker exterior and upswept walls. I immediately went to the shop and bought an introduction to the Tate book, then off to coffee to read about what I was going to see. My first planned stop was Dali's Metamorphosis of Narcissus, Matisse's 'Snail', and a Picasso, etc. The special exhibition by the textile artist Magdalena Abakanowicz distracted me on my way to Dali. Abakanowicz's art is breathtaking. Walking through her 'forest' of giant hanging three dimensional tapestries was as if I was in a herd of silent, calm, woolly mammoths. Next, I went in search of Dali & Matisse with no success. A dosen informed me that the book was outdated and those paintings were 'not on display'. In fact, as far as I could tell, most of the works of art in the book were 'not on display'. WHY? This is very disappointing ; why not exhibit them? There is certainly enough wall space, as many of the rooms have stretches of bare white walls. Many of the modern works of art displayed are white, gray, or brown, and/or have a social/political theme. This is good, but where is the beauty and joy of art? One of several exceptions was the Cecilia Vicuña: Brain Forest Quipu, which gave off a feeling of space and connection. Changing what art is exhibited keeps visitors up on the latest artists, styles, and themes, but equally important is making sure that timeless masterpieces are always available for new visitors (me) and returnees wanting to visit their favorite piece. Please, TATE MODERN, update your guide book and give us the chance to see the wonderful masterpieces currently hidden away. read more

Super cool art museum with so many famous and not so famous artists. Called a modern museum, there are still quite a few pieces I would not consider "modern." We try to always take in a museum or two when traveling, Tate Modern was definitely a good one to expose my girls to. Not sure they were old enough to fully appreciate the works right in front of them. However, that said, I'm glad we went, we all enjoyed it tremendously. read more

I'm with Yee Gan as in I've never quite adapted that gene for modern art interpretation and appreciation... at times, it's more like being a voyeur through a psychedelic roller-coaster, or a walk down sensory overload lane....free museum save special exhibits, across the river from St Paul's by way of the pedestrian Millennium Bridge. Regardless, I was here with time to kill waiting for a tour to begin across the way at Shakespeare's Globe, and this ultra-chic and stark exterior and interior was expansive and intriguing. I wandered the floors that were free and perused the marvelously diverse gift and bookstore. Glad I saw it and appreciated the diversion. Best part is the very convenient Tate boat whisking one down the Thames and over to the Tate Britain, which I took in after the Globe. read more

The art scene being what it is back in LA, I wasn't too keen on spending my days in London looking at more art. I've heard such things about this gallery, however, that curiosity got the better of me. Plus, it's free, so what the hell? Upon walking down the stairs and through the tunnel on Thames Path, I felt like I really was in another place. The area is lovely, and the leisurely pace at which people spend their time in the small park nearby and gazing at the weird pieces of art really brought me into the moment of being there and enjoying where I was. It's no wonder, as this being one of London's busiest hubs, the Tate Modern offers a little oasis of peace in the midst of the city. There are even ice cream and doughnut vendors nearby. The gallery itself is pretty big, and offers many different rooms showcasing different artists of varying degrees of popularity. The featured artist galleries aren't free, but for a few pounds you can indulge in all that art to your heart's content. Just don't take any pictures. The rest of the galleries are free, however, and there are a few cafes and gift shops along the lower levels so you can have a little something to remember your trip. read more

Big Disconnect between ratings here and Tripadvisor, this is not a 4 star spot. It does have the BEST view of London for free, though. Horrible staff, decent museum. So, following up my comment on the coca cola london eye experience, instead of paying 60 pounds for that rip off, go to the Tate which is free, and then go to the top of the Tate and you can view the entire London Skyline for free with less crowds. Visited last September with my now ex and I was constantly told I couldn't use my Joby Gorilla pod which really annoyed me. Why let someone in a museum with a camera and complain about a tripod? It's important for the observation deck... but anyway, don't go for the museum, go for the view. read more

I was disappointed with the Tate Modern. If you compare it to the National Gallery or the Portrait Museum there are not very many quality pieces of art given the massive two buildings. I did appreciate the Munch, Picasso, Matisse, and Dali works there is not much else worth seeing. The best thing is that the museum is free. I highly recommend the National Gallery as a better use of your time. read more

What a unique and beautiful experience walking through the different exhibits at the Tate Modern. Such a modern environment and different from any museum you will go to. The modern art is real and rare. Artists don't hide anything and make known their place in the world. As much as I love old art history it is important to see the artists present today in museums. Aside from "feminist activist artists" Guerrilla Girls, not a single modern or contemporary artist here resonated with me. Most exhibits featured abstract art which is beyond my comprehension. Guerrilla Girls' art consisted of statements, written in black & white boldface, challenging society, "the system," & the art community to rethink moral standards. I need things spelled out for me; I need words, which is probably why I was drawn to this particular collection. The rooms at Tate Modern are large & mostly bare, the space is airy & cool. There are chairs & benches scattered around for those needing a break from being on their feet. Admission is free, however, there is a fee for special exhibits. Worth a wander 'round. For me, it was a stopover on the way to my final destination, Shakespeare's Globe Theater. read more

This was overall a great museum. Some of the exhibits are free while others can be viewed at a small charge. I would recommend only seeing a few exhibits at a time here since the museum is huge! The museum is open fairly late so this makes for a great end of day adventure! read more

This is a good option if it's a rainy day in London (which it probably is). I've come here many times when it's pouring and don't feel like walking around outside. You can enter by the river or by the Millennium pedestrian bridge. Admission is free which is nice and there are many exhibits. There's actually two separate buildings and you can go to each building via the bridge (4th floor and ground floor). If you go to the top of the highest building, you get a nice view of London for free instead of going on the overpriced London Eye. I'm from NYC and I have to say it's a nicer modern art museum than the MOMA. read more

This was my first time going to the Tate Museum but it certainly won't be my last. I loved many of the exhibits on display and enjoyed the interactive ones as well. A fun feature I like are the swings on the lower level. That's when you really see people let loose and have fun. The building itself is a work of art in my opinion. I love the architecture of it and how intricate certain parts are. If I remember correctly, the building used to be some sort of old factory or warehouse that had been converted to a museum. read more

My favorite modern building in all of London-- a true palace of and for the people. The most welcoming entrance, incredible use of found space, light, airy and of course: a feast for the art lover. Another city, and another art gallery, but Tate Modern is one of the best for modern and contemporary art, and exhibiting an array of work. The building itself is split in two, with varying themes and access on each level - greater access for paid members, but plenty to see for free. One of the first exhibitions I saw was Louise Nevelson, which really caught my attention. Nevelson was a New York Sculptor and developed pieces in this exhibition from the late 50s onwards. The two pieces in particular were "An American Tribute to the British People 1960-4" and "Black Wall 1959". Very similar pieces, which use wood from crates, old timber, and furniture, and constructed and arranged into a towering formation. The first painted gold and resembles the tone of a large church organ, in my perspective, and the other black, and also contained random objects within the boxes stacked up. The paint gave the pieces a unified look, which adds to their statements. They both have quite a simplistic design, but had a distinguished impact on me. Following, I visited the "Explore Materials and Objects" exhibition, with the main piece being Marcel Duchamps "Fountain" (1917) - the urinal! This display has a collection of various materials and artists' work using a variety of different materials, and visitors can see how the differences impact on art. Continuing with materials, another display is "A View from Tokyo: Between Man and Matter", a selection of materials (wood and concrete) close to their basic form with minimal manipulation, and arranged and placed against walls, which, for me, comments on the connection between nature and humanity. Another display focuses on Media Networks, and has collections by Andy Warhol and the Guerila Girls, but what caught my attention the most was collection "Painting and Mass Media", especially paintings by Wilhelm Sasnal, who painted in 2011 three paintings of images that circulated in the media soon after the death of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. One was of the corpse and a group of people standing over gazing down upon it, another was a close up of a crowd with (some with cameras) gazing down upon what is presumed (as it is out of picture) Gaddafi's corpse. The figures in the paintings are almost shadow-like with minimal blurred features and a red tint overlaps the images - quite harrowing, but comments on current society, where events like this can be captured and shared around the world so easily by modern technology. I quite like this display as a whole, other artists' work were quite thought provoking, and really interesting to see. Finally, I visited the Artist Rooms: Louise Bourgois, a Parisian born in 1911, who uses sculptors and drawings to revisit memories and her life again and again. One of the joys of Tate Modern, is that it will always have new displays and something new to see, so visitors can return to discover new wonders time and time again. read more

Must see in London if you have an interest in modern art. Exhibits range from full-room installments, interactive pieces, performance art, and early modern art. Warning- if you are not into modern art, this probably isn't the place for you. It is not a classic art museum- there is digital art, pornographic performance art, and testicle jokes. If you go in with an open mind, ready to expand your definition of art, this will be an unforgettable experience. There is a community room in one of the upper levels- when I was there, there was a featured exhibit on Dale Farm. Travelers were there to explain what happened at Dale Farm and share art installations, it was truly moving. Pro tip: on the 10th floor of the right-side building (when you are looking at the Tate Modern with your back to the river) there is a panoramic viewing deck with amazing views of the city read more

This was our first official stop on vacation to the United Kingdom. The Tate Modern is located right after you get off the Millennium Bridge and adjacent to the Globe. When we got to the Tate Modern, we were able to check in our luggage so we didn't have to cart it around while we walked through the museum. It was very safe and secure and I didn't feel like my luggage was going to be stolen. For a free attraction in London, this is definitely a good one. The building is HUGE with a ton of different exhibits. We spent a little over an hour and only went through two exhibits. If you wanted to tour all the free exhibits you should budget a few hours to walk through everything. I'm not the biggest fan of modern art, but I can appreciate it. If that is not your cup of tea I would probably pass on it. I enjoyed the Tate Modern and it was a good start to the vacation. read more

The first thing you will notice when you enter is a giant metal ball swinging back and forth and then lots of two and three seater swings. Super random, but so much fun. Every last Friday of the month, there is the Uniglo Tate Lates where you can experience after-hours art, music, film and workshops. At the moment, there is the amazing "fog sculpture" by the Japanese artist, Fujiko Nakaya, part of the BMW Tate Live Exhibition: Ten Days Six Nights, until 2 April 2017. An immersive art where you can walk right into the middle of it, the shape of which changes according to the weather and nature! The workshop this Friday was finger knitting billed as Knit & Natter With I Make Knots. What a brilliant idea and workshop where people of all ages, all nationalities, male or female just get finger knitting, sitting on floors, stairs wherever there is an available space. Great atmosphere, great fun and laughter, a very enjoyable evening. Afterwards, you can enjoy the all night 241 cocktails and dance the night away with DJ's playing their set in the cafes. While there, remember the beautiful views from the viewing terrace, at the top of Switch House, use the dedicated lift on Level 0. read more

I was surprised with myself that I was disappointed with Tate Modern. I loved my postmoderism art history class in college and since then (almost a decade ago) have been looking forward to one day being able to visit the day. I think that maybe the covid logistics of attempting to even enter the museum didn't help the experience get off to a great start. If you are planning a trip anyway check in with all museums to ensure you have been able to accommodate their new check in process - even at free museums. We planned ahead for this but there were some technical errors that caused us a delay in getting into the building, and unfortunately a lot of their staff didn't have a lot of guidance to give us or the multiple groups of individuals attempting to fix their digital tickets that weren't working. Maybe my experience was flawed because I had built up this visit for so long, I just thought that there would be more art on display. So review the exhibition list for the time you plan to visit so you can determine if you'd like to see another museum instead. read more

Huge modern and contemporary art museum near the Thames in London. There was a Rauschenberg exhibition when I went which was the main reason I decided to visit. But I'm glad I did. The layout is a little confusing, there are two separate buildings, Boiler House and Switch House and navigating between the two seems odd (to me, anyway). I felt there it was more weighted toward contemporary art (later 20th century). There is a decent café, but was told by a number of colleagues the restaurant at the top floor is very good. Admission is free, but they encourage you to contribute (as well you should if you can afford it!) Definitely worth the visit, especially if you're a fan of contemporary works. read more

I will be in the minority here but I really did not like the Tate Modern at all. It felt like an above ground concrete bunker, it would have been cold even without the breeze rushing through the main concourse. I found nothing welcoming about the structures themselves. Navigation was futile. I did not find one employee there for directions. I'm not at all shy about asking strangers for help but this was just beyond. The art was mostly mediocre at best. It's great that so much has been spent to encourage the arts, but it felt more like student exhibitions. In fact if you want to see stellar student exhibitors go to the Hammer Museum in Westwood, Los Angeles, California Hated the curating. I'm a huge fan of the SF and NYC MoMA's. This just fell so far below the mark for me. read more
