I will be in the minority here but I really did not like the Tate Modern at all. It felt like an above ground concrete bunker, it would have been cold even without the breeze rushing through the main concourse. I found nothing welcoming about the structures themselves. Navigation was futile. I did not find one employee there for directions. I'm not at all shy about asking strangers for help but this was just beyond. The art was mostly mediocre at best. It's great that so much has been spent to encourage the arts, but it felt more like student exhibitions. In fact if you want to see stellar student exhibitors go to the Hammer Museum in Westwood, Los Angeles, California Hated the curating. I'm a huge fan of the SF and NYC MoMA's. This just fell so far below the mark for me. read more

Yet another free museum in London - I feel like a broken record in saying this over and over again, but it really is crazy how many different museums you can go to in London without having to pay anything. The Tate Modern, as its name suggests, is a modern art museum. Modern art is a little hit or miss for me, but like all museums, there's going to be something here for everyone, and you'll be able to find something that you will enjoy in its vast collections. The floors are arranged thematically, taking you through an artist's relationship with society, work in the studio, materials, etc. And they've generally got good plaques explaining what each thing is displaying. A cool new addition from the last time I was here is the Switch House, which is an extension of the museum with 3 more floors of art collections. Also, since the Switch House is 10 floors, you can go all the way to the top, which is a viewing level that grants you a pretty nice view of London - when facing the Thames as you get off onto the floor, you can see the Millennium Bridge and St Paul's right in front of you, and to the left and right there's a nice view of London from the south. read more

Amazing displays, open late, and best of all: free. I had a transcendent experience at Tate Modern. It was on my list of places to visit, but when i actually visited I just accidentally stumbled upon it and decided to check it out. It was rainy and cloudy evening and I scurried across the Millennium bridge trying to find shelter. I was very happy to find that the museum was free and open late, so with the rain outside it was the perfect way to spend the evening. Inside, I was greeted by a very large hall, with young people lying down on their backs, immersed by the sounds and visuals of the Philippe Parreno Anywhen display. I lied down and stayed there for at least 30 min, though I was so relaxed and immersed I could have stayed for ages. As I made my way through the several floors of displays, I found a great deal of very interesting modern art. A lot of it videos and other appropriate modern media. There was even an interactive Q&A session with one of the artists right on site. I had a great time and saw lots of very thought-provoking works. Wandering though a modern art museum on a rainy night just made sense. If you have any interest in art it is definitely worth a visit. read more

Tate Modern is one of the top modern and contemporary art galleries in the world and a must-see for all artists and art historians. To reach the gallery, you must cross the uber-modern Millennium Bridge. Looking to the left, one's gaze pans across the River Thames over to the Tower Bridge, off in the distance. Seeing this 19th century suspension bridge is a reminder of the beginning of the modern art era as one is about to engage with some of the most salient works of the 20th century (see photo http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz_photos/QXOrompG3b2o7g6P4ePb5w?select=n33fswcRdneEBg3iSpPCOQ). Although it looks like you are about to enter an industrial era power station, this mundane building is an art gallery. This is not the main entrance, but it offers easy access to the gallery and the most lovely view. The gallery is arranged logically and thoughtfully on 7, easy to navigate, levels. There is a restaurant and bar on level 7, as well as a casual cafe on level 2. There are toilets with nappy-changing stations on each level, as well as facilities that are wheelchair accessible. Wifi is available in select areas and the gallery shop is not to be missed. Tate Modern is a collection of international art featuring works of the Fauvist, Surrealist, Abstract Expressionist, and Minimalist movements. You will also find works that, while categorized into lesser movements, are in some way in dialogue with the major movements. If you happen upon a gallery wall that reads to the effect that cubism was the first style to proffer art that is simultaneously abstract and realist, just go with it. As illogical as this may seem, artists and art historians can bore you with the details as to why this is so. I will spare you the explanation here. I recommend taking a look at works by the Italian Futurists and English Vorticists, as well as works from the contemporary collection. You will no doubt recognize the very pedestrian post war pop art of Warhol and Lichtenstein, however you might not have experienced a Rothko room. Be sure to check that out. Tate Modern displays their Rothko's expressly as the artist intended them to be viewed. Some artists' works can be found in more than one area, for example Kasimir Malevich, so you may want to consult their extraordinary website prior to your visit. Tate Modern embodies a gallery designed with the viewing public in mind. If anything disastrous ever happens to MoMA in New York or Centre Pompidou in Paris, Tate Modern would rank as my favorite 20th century art collection in the world. It's fabulous and, like all of the national galleries, there is no fee for admission, although there is a fee charged for special exhibitions. Carpe diem! read more

I love the Tate Modern, mainly because I like modern art, but also because I love the actual building. It's a fabulous idea to turn an industrial site into somewhere to display modern art. At first I wasn't certain that some of my favourites from the Tate wouldn't be dwarfed by the scale - however the staging of both permanent and special exhibitions is done really well and the size of the turbine hall means that some superb large scale installations can be shown. I also have a bit of a family history with the Tate - my dad used to work there back in the day when he was at the central electricity generating board (pre nationalisation) - so it's always evocative to walk into the serene turbine hall and imagine the huge noisy turbines! It's free entry to the permanent exhibitions, with additional paid tickets for special exhibitions, luckily I get entry as part of my employer's corporate membership so I get to visit everything. Having recently visited with a friend and her son, the Tate is inspirational for all sorts of people at all ages. I'd highly recommend, especially to while away some hours on a wet Sunday afternoon, the scones and tea in the cafe are amazing too! 2016 will be a year of change with areas being refurbished and the new tower with 10 floors of extra space.... read more

It's free, how can you give it a bad review?! Anyway, I love the Tate Modern. I came here by myself on a rainy day in London fully expecting the place to be just as dreary inside as the weather was outside. I was so wrong. I walked into the large 1st floor almost warehouse area, and it was pitch black. I saw many people sort of hanging out on the floor and I honestly wasn't sure what was going on. I was about to go upstairs to a more lit area when the light show started. I realized this was one of their exhibits! The nice thing about the Tate is that they really go from contemporary to a much older style and contain artwork from many different cultures and different movements. I am by no means an art connoisseur but thoroughly enjoyed their Asian inspired exhibits. I even saw the artist who created one of the special exhibits there that day! I think it would honestly take you more than 3 hours to get through everything thoroughly. I ended up taking about 2 because I skipped through some of the exhibits and only went to find those that I was very interested in. I feel like there's a lot of art here, and it is totally worth checking out! read more

So there are two Tate museums. This Modern version focuses on 19th-20th centuries sculptures and paintings from mostly British people. And the cool thing is that it is FREE admission here and at the Tate Britain. But if you have the London Pass, you get the audio guide for free. This place is huge. They have 7 floors of exhibits. But they only have 3 or 4 floors dedicated to their permanent collections and the rest are reserved for the temporary and pay exhibits. But I was surprised that it wasn't just British artists are being represented here. A lot of my favorite impressionists artists' paintings are here as well including Picasso and Matisse. But the focus here is modern stuff including contemporary art where you look at it and you wonder sometimes "you've got to be kidding?!?...this is art" kind of thing. But you don't normally say that, although you think that. But I'm here to actually say it since some of you don't normally say it. But overall, it's a great experience coming here. They have a great collection and their bookstore is huge too. read more

On raining days and holidays there's nothing more I love doing than taking a wander down the Thames and ending up in the Tate. I love walking in to the main hall to see what mad giant exhibt is using up the space. My favourites in the past included the giant slide and the giant crack, clearly I'm a fan of small things made big! The exhibitions themselves are always very interesting but importantly also very accessible. Even though this is a modern art museum, I never feel intimidated by my lack of arty knowledge or bored by endless displays of one artists sketch book. Exhibits like the street art display reflect the Tate's attempts to attract a diverse audience and I believe they acheive this very well. Walk around the Tate for more than five minutes and you will come across more nationalities and age groups than in any other London tourist attraction. The gift shop is worth a particular mention for its great range of affordable books and toys, as is the top floor restaurant which offers some of the best views of London. Even if you loathe modern art, it's still worth wandering up here to take in some great views. I would recommend the Tate to tourists and Londoners alike- it really is one of the city's best assets. read more

I love a good modern art museum, and Tate Modern is a great one. London is one of the most expensive cities in the world, but one of its best attractions is free. How can you not make a visit? The museum is actually quite manageable, and you can explore the entire collection in just a few hours. The four main galleries are arranged thematically in a way that was educational for an art ignoramus like me. I like that each gallery is introduced by two juxtaposed pieces, along with detailed explanations of how they represent what you're about to see. The organization is smart and informative, and the artwork thought-provoking. The building itself is also an attraction, and I enjoy both the architecture and the view from the top floor facing directly across from St. Paul's. Even if you're not into modern art, the Tate Modern is worth seeing just for these assets. I was lucky enough to stop by the museum on the opening day of Ai Weiwei's "Sunflower Seeds" exhibit. I understand that it has since been closed to public interaction, but I would still recommend taking a look. One hundred million sunflower seeds made of hand-painted porcelain fill the large space of Turbine Hall like pebbles making up a beach. Each one looks real even up close, and there are one hundred million of them. It's a miraculous work of art, and interacting with it was a highlight of my visit. I sat in it, lay down in it, scooped up seeds, and hundreds of others did the same. I didn't go into the special exhibit as I'm not too keen on Gauguin and it cost money. I don't feel like I missed out, though, and I had a splendid time at the Tate Modern. It is one museum that I'm certain to visit again. read more

Five star world class art around every corner. Not only is the Tate Modern full of great art but the main galleries are free, not something you normally find with modern art. In fact I'm not sure where else in the world you can find a free Museum. The structure is spacious and the cafe is very inviting. The view of the building from the outside is impressive, it's as gorgeous building. Inside the layout makes you feel sort of small. The view from the upper floors is also very nice, take time to stop and enjoy it. It;s a hard thing to be in a hurry here, but in actuality the free areas don't take a long time to check out. If you pay for the special exhibits the galleries are large and can take a bit more time to check out. T\I found that the gift shop here at the Tate Modern is amazing. The art supplies and kids section is wonderful. It's a great place to pick up some gifts. read more

It's certainly hard to beat free isnt it? we made a bit of a donation anyways and made our way through the first few levels and the views from the top restaurant. Bill viola, Richard Serra, Picasso, Francis Bacon, and many of my other favorites are tucked throughout. It's a much larger space than what it needs in it's contents. Saw an exhibit that looked like piles of crap on the floor. Best is going up to the observation deck on a clear day for great views of the city. My first experience at the Tate Modern was Olafur Eliasson's 2003 installation, The Weather Project, in 2003, with its yellow lights, semicircular screen, mirrored ceiling, and pumped-in mist. I visited shortly after it opened and before it made headlines in the United States. To see folks lounging and basking in front of the orange glow was pleasantly haunting. For me, Mr. Eliasson excelled in his ability to marry his installation to the overwhelming space and it had a deep and satisfying effect on me -- much like Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 'The Gates' installation in New York City's Central Park did for me a few years later. Indeed, I remember that there were so many calls to make The Weather Project a permanent exhibit and I agreed. However, I'm glad the massive Turbine Hall was later turned over to other artists. I've found the rest of the art on display at Tate Modern to be a hit-or-miss affair, but I can appreciate the chances the museum takes for its visitors and I wouldn't think of passing up any opportunity to visit when I'm in town. If only more large structures in the United States could be taken over and converted to culture in the way the Tate Modern has done. (The grain elevators in Buffalo, New York, come to mind.) I guess I can dream. read more

I just love the Tate Modern. In comparing some of the greatest modern art galleries I've been to, this is my favourite - not only because I have fond memories of visiting as a young teenager only days after its opening in 2000. As a free gallery, it houses some of the greatest modern art pieces of all time by artists such as Picasso, van Gogh, Monet, Rothko, Mondrian to name a few. The turbine hall, which is seen when entering from the side of the gallery, not the riverside entrance, is in itself an exhibition grounds, having hosted some great artists such as Ai Wei Wei's sunflower seeds, Louise Bourgeois' large spider sculpture and Doris Salcedo's crack (it's a sculpture). The Tate's longer term displays (collection displays) always tackle modern issues - as of this review being written the topics are 'making traces', 'citizens and states', 'material worlds' and 'media networks'. Temporary exhibitions have included works by Roy Lichtenstein, L. S. Lowry and Mondrian. The gallery is excellent for children, the turbine hall offers lots of free space, and on each floor there are comfy seats for both children and adult alike. The gallery generously offers free good wifi. For food and drinks, there is a cafe on the first floor (riverside level), on the third floor and a restaurant on the sixth floor. If you do grab a coffee on the third floor cafe do check out the view from the balcony!! The gallery has shops on the first floor (riverside entrance), first and second floors. The shops sell fun toys/art books for children as well as descriptive and biographical books on artists and art in general. The Tate souvenirs are also available. From June 2016, an extension to the tate will open - housing eleven floors of additional modern art. The Tate is classy, diverse and rich in what it offers - it is a must see and you will not be disappointed. 6/5 if I could. read more

Kudos to the Tate for treating its visitors as humans :). Restrooms were available (free!), maps and courteous information helpers were available. There were great free exhibits we could wander through, including works from well known artists. The cafe wasn't over priced and had both omnivore and vegetarian options. It was a comfortable experience where I felt I could relax and connect with the exhibits and not feel like I had to "move along" or that I was intruding in some posh persons space. I definitely left a donation in the coffer on the way out. read more

I am always a bit sceptical about modern art and the Tate modern has it all, and I mean it ALL. From bits of air conditioning vent and blobs of cement to Andy Warhol. I went to check out their new extension Switch House. The collections on display are mostly media and videos with a lot spaces with soft carpet and pillows to relax on. If you can I would highly recommend joining one of the free guided tours. The guides are very passionate about the art and I found it helped to get insight to some of the more interesting pieces. Before you leave your MUST visit the viewing platform on level 10 of the Switch House. I was there at night and it was an amazing outlook of the city. read more

There really isn't a substitute for the Tate Modern. I love MoMA, but for installations the Tate Modern sometimes wins curatorially. I mean, whether it's an amazing Diane Arbus show, which is sublime and dignified in its restraint, or something mind-blowing in the Turbine. It does its part. The architecture defines the space, and the sequence in which it is consumed by any viewer. Every step is part of how you hear and find yourself amidst a plethora of paintings, and objects. The staff are very helpful, and if you are London and don't go... you've made a mistake. read more

I found Tate Modern to be overwhelming in all the best ways. Situated on the Thames, the views out the back are phenomenal. I do believe my entire experience was enhanced because I had never been to London at the time, but I still think back with amazement at my trip to the Tate in October 2007. Doris Salcedo's Shibboleth installation had just opened and that was of course the first thing that stood out. Rarely, if ever, could you walk into a revered museum to find the first floor completely severed. A subterranean chasm as they called it, engulfed the first floor by stretching the fracture throughout the entire space. You could look down into it and it was a truly phenomenal way of transforming a space in a minimal, but monumental way. The architecture and layout of Tate Modern were excellent as well. This museum is navigable with ease and there are plenty of spots to take a rest along the way. While I was there I also got to see the Louise Bourgeois retrospective which was expansive and eye-opening. While I was particularly taken with the cells, the exhibition spanned her entire career and it was a great exploration of her diverse talent. Tate Modern is aggressively programmed, educational and always in context. Of all the things I saw, one thing still stays in mind all the time. There was a tiny alcove dedicated to photographer Francesca Woodman and it completely blew my mind. The tragic story behind her life is for you to find out, but the photographs were unforgettable and capped a day at a museum that exceeded all my expectations. I hope I get to return here one day, but for now I will continue to measure all museum experiences against this one. read more

One of my favorite museums to visit for its location and collection. It's always a pleasant walk from the Blackfriars tube stop, walking across the bridge and along the river. They have a lovely collection of impressionism paintings to current works. For those not so familiar with the artwork, each (if not all) works include a little information placard next to each piece, as well as a more detailed introduction and back story to the room you're in as you enter it. Their shop has an extensive collection of art book from every disciplne, making it impossible to leave without buying something. read more

I have finally cracked it! One of the things that I really find off-putting when visiting any Museum is the masses of crowds. This has always been the reason why i would walk in and right back out of many London key attractions. I know I know I should not take this as a negative but sometimes just sometimes it would be nice to walk around without having your personal space invaded by strangers (she says when being a regular underground user). Anyway, now here is how I have managed to manage this adversity... go in the evenings and even better weekday evenings. There are less crowds and even less tourists. I had been dragged on this particular evening to look at the Mona Hatoum exhibition which was beyond anything i could imagine. A complete stimulation of all your senses. read more

What a wacky cool museum. First off everything in London is huge so this place had 7 levels. My group didn't even get through them all. But we got to see some really cool stuff and big name artist. There were Dali's, Monet's, Warhol, and the like. My favorite was the radio tower. Very abstract and thought provoking. What you need to know is to plan at least a half a days time here for the full experience. There are too many floors for an hour. read more

Things I didn't like... - confusion on where to enter the museum...is it up? down? elevator? escalator? very confusing. - I couldn't find a map...anywhere. Things I liked.... - The permanent collection - The way it was spaced out and arranged - I thought it was tasteful and interesting. - The price (free! unless you're at a special exhibit). Get the audio guide. Start at the top floor and work your way down to the bottom. It took us about 4.5 hours with lunch at the beginning and afternoon tea in the middle of our trip. Don't rush through this museum. Amazing views from the balconies. Rothko music on the audio guide ads something special. Some of the video/film installations are 75+ minutes long - so if you want to see everything you might need more than 4 hours. read more

The Georgia O'Keefe exhibition is really worth a visit - especially with the 241 offer available by showing our train tickets. It was busy but we could still read the blurbs and stand and stare. Such a variety of styles - such an interesting woman. If you're interested it's worth looking up the Alan Yentob programme on O'Keefe available on i-player....made me want to go back to see the exhibition all over again! read more

I am no art expert but was pleasantly surprised with this gallery and went in with an open mind. The Tate Modern is on the other side of St Paul's Cathedral, situated over the Millennium Bridge. It's at a convenient location so if you're in the area, you might as well drop by since the museum is free. The walk along the bridge to get to Tate Modern has a great view of the London skyline and Thames River. The gallery has over 4 floors - most exhibits are free with the exception of one or two where you pay as you enter. If you are interested in modern art, you can easily spend 2-4 hours without running out of things to see. However, if you're just curious about art (like I was), you can probably get about 1 -2 hours' worth of enjoyment. We had a stroll around the free displays, and it was an interesting hour or so. There was a good mix of modern art - paints, pictures, media art, and sculptures. Some were classic, some were disturbing with adult content, some were abstract. They were all intriguing to see. Glad I visited, but wouldn't rush back next time I'm in London. read more

Note that I'm not a big fan of art. When I've stepped into art museums in the past, I'm usually overwhelmed by an aesthetic headache after a short while and must leave the building to regain my senses. That said, after being talked into coming to the Tate Modern with some travelling colleagues, I still give this museum 5-stars for the following observations: 1.) Its free. Hard to complain about anything when there is no investment asked of me - at least monetarily. There is a voluntary donation bin at the entrance where they ask for a modest £4 donation. 2.) Its in the middle of everything. One doesn't have to go out of the way to visit the Tate Modern as its essentially convenient to and within any path to any other tourist site in London. It sits on the South Bank of the Thames adjacent to the Globe Theater and directly across the Millennium bridge (a site unto itself) from St. Paul's Cathedral. If nothing else, its a nice place to catch your breath and take a break from the weather. The 2nd floor balcony also offers a very nice view of the London skyline. 3.) Its historic. While much of the art I observed in my brief jog through the museum was more confusing than inspiring or beautiful (at least to my novice eye), there are some historic pieces in the building. Monet's Waterlilies and a couple of Picasso's adorn the walls. Not a lot of places in the world where one can see something of that magnitude. 4.) Its different - uniquely London. When I go vacation, I want to see/experience something different. When I travel, I want to see/experience the local culture that makes up that destination. Isn't that the point? The Tate Modern is quintessentially a London/UK experience. All in all, a great investment of one's touring time. read more

I came on a Friday evening after a LONG flight from San Francisco. I spent a good 2 hrs here, and I have to say, it's one of my favorite museums in London. The balcony views are amazing, even when it's cloudy. Admission is free except for special exhibits. The museum is located along the Southbank and is within walking distance from Southwark of Black Friars station. It's also close the Cathedral, Globe, and Eye, so try and see all in one day. read more

Pros: - modern attraction compared to the more traditional touristy places If you visit London and choose to visit Bankside, the route I took was 1) tour St. Paul's Cathedral 2) walk the Millennium Bridge and then 3) view the Tate Modern. All are within walking distance of each other. Contemporary art is usually not my cup of tea, but I enjoyed the Tate Modern. We paid for a multimedia guide, which was easy to use and had some fun facts about select pieces of art that weren't written in the description (wish there was information about more pieces of art!). The works I enjoyed the most were structural pieces and anything that was great inspiration for architecture/interior design/furniture. My dad who's an artist, absolutely loved this place. We set aside 2 hours to walk through the museum, but it wasn't enough time for him to walk through all the exhibits. All in all, doesn't hurt to check it out, it's free! read more

The Tate now ranks among my absolute favorite art museums (along with the museum of modern art in Moscow). There's almost a whole floor dedicated to Surrealism! The curation and segway from movement to movement was interesting and thought-provoking! Fantastic sculpture, 2D, and video pieces were spread throughout. Big name Picassos and some of the best art store gift shops I've seen sweeten the deal. And... the Tate is free except for special exhibitions although a donation is suggested. Great views of the Thames from the cafe on the third floor. read more

Try as I do, I just don't get modern art. Really, what is it? I watched a guy almost step on a shoebox in the middle of the floor and we both looked at each other and laughed because that was one of the pieces. This museum is in a great location right on the river by the Globe and across Millennium Bridge from St. Paul's. Find some time to work in a stop here and have a go at the art on display here. There were some odd films playing and some really beautiful Dalis, Picassos, Pollocks and Warhols. I still think the MOMA is the modern art museum that all others will be judged by. But, the Tate has a very impressive collection. read more

My favourite place in London! Tate Modern is all about contemporary art - any kind of art; paintings, photos, videos, sculptures, immersive stuff. Here you will find one of the bigest collections of contemporary art from popular as well as new artists from all over the world. After June's new opening of the Switch House, the collections are now split between the old and the new building. The buidings by themselves are quite impressive having the brutalist architecture trend. Stunning views of St Paul Cathedral and Thames if you choose to sit for a coffee or food at the 6th floor of the old building (cheap prices here!) or stunning 360 views of London if you choose the 10th floor of the new building (no shop here - just balcony). If you choose the 10th floor, be aware; there are lifts going straight to the top, don't take the wrong lift going just to the middle of the building. A whole day is not enough to explore the place. Despite being quite open spaces and not over-stuffed with art objects all over the place, still there are a lot to explore either in the permanent or the temporary collections or even the really well equiped with modern art's books & items 2 x ground floor shops. read more
