We were looking for something a cut above the paces where we have been dining during our time in Rome and tried this place based on guidebook recommendations. But wife found it precious (and kvetched and kvetched about this and that), but the other adults rather liked it. The meal began with some extras from the chef -- some interesting crackers created by the chef some long and skinny breadsticks; small macaroons with pumpkin sauce on top; a cracker with red beet sauce; and a small piece of pork belly, all very flavorful. From the menu we got a cheese assortment that was easily the best cheese plate we have had in three weeks in Italy (our daughter-in-law cadged a wedge of it to take home for an extra 25 euros, plus we got the name a of the producer and a suggestion that we look for it them in Mercato Trionfale tomorrow morning). The younger grandchildren got pasta with red sauce and cheese and oil, their go-tos, which were made available though not on the menu. I had some capelletti with a sauce made of rabbit, and beef made with liquefied arugula and squash pieces. (the largest of the menu dishes). Three of us had risotto and grandson Abe, who does not like mushrooms, bravely tried it and it turned out to be ok because the mushrooms were powdered and sprinkled on top (the risotto was a bit crunchy; my wife insisted that it was undercooked, consistent with her generally negative view, but we assumed that this texture was intended). Sam had the duck breast which he liked although the portion was small. The wine list ran very expensive but we found a bottle we could afford and had two of them. The restaurant was just okay. Prices were pretty high considering how small the portions were. Our dinners took a while to come out and none of the food was hot. Nothing we had was bad, but at the same time nothing was delicious or exceptional. The service was pretty good and the wine was also good (as all Italian wine is), and also nothing was terrible so 3 stars seems fair. She greeted us with warmth and affection (she is Napolitana), and offered us delicious fresh meals: Slow cooked pork filet in a light teriyaki sauce and Jerusalem artichokes; Breast of goose with mango chutney; grilled octopus in a light creme sauce with cool dried raspberries. An excellent and hidden-away treasure near the Vatican! First, our server was attentive with a dry sense of humor, but gave us excellent wine recommendations and had a candid conversation about his travels around Europe. This was a rare encounter as obvious tourists (not just the humor- also the respect), and refreshing. Second, the food! €10 pasta is quite common around Rome, but here it was actually worth it. We waited 15-20 minutes for the food to come out, but the pasta was freshly made and the sauce was to die for (particularly the pistachio one). And, the waiter gave us free appetizers (delicious quiche) while we waited. The seafood salad was freshly tossed, the risotto was light and good, everything was served beautifully. This was the best meal that I had in Italy. Everything was prepared perfectly and all of the dishes were beautifully presented. I'm really glad that we found this place. It can be easy to miss! I ordered the tasting menu and was very happy with everything that came out. The portions were huge! It was more like two full meals with a starter and dessert. I had to be careful and not eat all of the pasta because I knew I still had the beef dish coming. I also kept sampling my fiancé dish which was spaghetti with tomatoes, chili oil, and some other delicious ingredients. He helped me finish the huge serving of beef that we both couldn't get enough of! We somehow made room for our rich and delicious chocolate desserts. On top of all that- the prices were very good. First this is a very well kept secret, and it should not be! When in Rome, I had two nights to explore all of the magnificent food, and ended up in this restaurant two nights in a row!!! The owner is very nice and friendly, and the staff is as well. The food and wine was SPECTACULAR! on your next trip please visit. We were able to try about the entire menu, had six family members to pass food around. Their specialty was Italian seafood's, and I rocked it out with the chefs four course meal the first night. Not as good as its reviews The owner waited on us and was a delight, but unfortunately our meals did not measure up to the hype. I ordered my filet mignon medium rare and received it medium well done (not pink or juicy at all). My wife's filet of veal was exactly the same situation. If you don't get the meat done right, you can't expect a good review. My only advice would be for potential diners to try and review the menu before you decide to go here. I depended on Yelp reviews without doing so and now regret my decision. Practically nothing on the menu was recognizable. Kinda like an artistic chef trying to get creative with all sorts of bizarre combinations. My wife and I stayed in Milan, Venice, Firenze and Rome. The best meal - and service - we had, hands down, was our last night in Rome at Taverna Angelica. Hidden around the corner from the Vatican, we discovered this amazing spot. We arrived just before opening time (around 8:00 pm) but the owner, Mariella, accommodated us. We had some house sparkling wine and (well-priced and delicious) and had a great time speaking with our server and Mariella. Our server was skilled, attentive and friendly, and Mariella was caring and gracious. THE FOOD! Our food was DELICIOUS and artfully presented, not overly priced, and super fresh. Perfect. What happened??? 3 years ago I visited and this was,by far, my favorite restaurant in Rome. So when my wife and I went back to Rome in January, Taverna Angelica was on my must eat list. I was surprised when we arrived that the restaurant was empty, until I got my food. What a disappointment. The Risotto I remembered so well was gone, replaced by an awful, salty concoction resembling Risotto. I started with a vegetable tart and Prosecco, and then had a cheese ravioli that was hands down the best pasta I've ever had. It's hard to even know where to begin to express how phenomenal this place is. From the moment we walked in the staff was amazing....top of the line...exceptional! Our waiter made menu and wine recommendations that weren't what we would have ordered ourselves. The wine he suggested was cheaper than what we had initially requested and as he explained his reasons it became clear he was very knowledgeable on the topic. And boy was he right. It was so so good. He recommended the octopus which.. was.. beyond.. description.. hands down the best tasting meal of our lives. We also had the gnocchi which excellent. Desert was incredible too. This place is beyond words you simply have to go there and have the best meal of your life as well! Additionally he gave us a recommendation for a pizza place later in the week...which was also incredible! Usually when I read one-star reviews, I roll my eyes because the reviewer comes off as a total snob, but bear with me. I have your stomach and wallet in mind. We had just arrived in Rome and had a heck of time finding parking - which is no surprise - and as you might guess, we were hungry and tired. A quick look on Trip Advisor and a double check on Yelp pointed us to this spot, which was conveniently within walking distance. We stop by to see the menu, which seems pricey but the reviews were good, and step in. First indication that we were making a mistake was that no one was there. We sit down and order a bottle of wine that our waiter recommended, which was good and decently priced (€22). We pick and appetizer and two pasta dishes, ordering all at once which I now regret. The appetizer, phillo dough "crackers" with a mint, feta, & spinach purée and a balsamic reduction drizzle, was all over the place in terms of flavor and really bad. It was super salty (lots of salt plus salty feta is harsh on the taste buds), the balsamic was mostly what I'm guessing to be honey, and there was wayyy too much mint. It ended up being extremely salty, sweet, and minty all at once. Two bites and we could eat any more. Okay, so we stack our plates on the edge of the table to say not so subtlety that we didn't like it and were done (otherwise, as is the Italian way, they won't approach you until your food is gone or you ask them). Fingers crossed that the main courses will be a home run and we can put this all behind us. Pasta and risotto come out and look promising, but it was all looks. The crispy bacon pasta (really American, I know, but I'd been eating traditional Italian dishes of each region for the past two weeks so I caved for the bacon) was even saltier than the appetizer. Guys, the bacon is salty so there's really no reason to salt the pasta heavily, if at all. The risotto was under cooked, watery, and over all tasted like it was one of the boxed rice meals you would find at a grocery store. I can usually chow through a meal even when it's not that good, but overly salty is something I can't get past. Safe to say we choked down a few bites of each before throwing in the napkin and asking for the check. Here's where I get annoyed. In most restaurants, the waiter will pick up on your dissatisfaction and inquire as to what didn't meet your expectations and ways that they might remedy your disappointment. Even more impressive is when the owner approaches the table as a sincere gesture. The owner was there, but all he did was speak angrily with the waiter within earshot of our table. To make things more weird, it seemed that they were talking about us based on a few phrases that I picked up on; that's speculation on my part, but angry conversations within earshot of your guests is generally a bad business practice. When we ask for the check (€58 by the way), the waiter obviously recognizes that we didn't find the food up to snuff, but he goes and rings up the bill anyway. Once that's been delivered and I've signed, the waiter then asks if we didn't like it to which we say it was way over salted. To be fair, I should haven't let it get to that point, but it felts strange to be up in arms over a meal in a country that isn't my own. If I spoke the language fluently, then I might have been more inclined. It's not clear to me how this restaurant got so many good reviews, but all I can say is that there are countless other restaurants around Italy that deserve your patronage way more. Do yourself a favor and drive an hour or two or take a train to one of the hill towns (Cortona stands out in my mind) where you can find charming, little mom & pop trattorias that serve amazing home cooked meals and treat you as if you were family. read more
