One of the first things you'll notice is that the waitstaff is dressed in traditional local uniforms, adding a nice cultural touch. However, don't expect overly warm or friendly service--it's efficient, but can feel a bit touristy, though perhaps slightly less so than at Schweizerhaus.
We went for the classic cured and crispy grilled pork knuckle (Stelze), which is available in three sizes. It's a rich and hearty dish, so if you're dining solo or not super hungry, the smallest size is perfectly sufficient. The pork knuckle was expertly cooked--crispy on the outside with tender, flavorful meat inside. However, be warned: sides such as horseradish and mustard are not included and require an extra charge, which feels a bit like a ripoff. While the taste was excellent, the nickel-and-dime approach for basic condiments was disappointing.
We also tried the Slovakian Kraut soup (cabbage soup with bacon, paprika, and sour cream), which was delicious and comforting. It's a dish I always order when visiting and I highly recommend it. However, you won't find the full range of dishes that are offered at Schweizerhaus, so the menu is somewhat limited and different.
Overall, Kolarik im Prater is a great alternative if you're looking for a more modern, less busy experience with the same iconic Viennese dishes. The food is delicious, though the extra charges for sides can feel excessive (hence 1 star less). The atmosphere is nice, and while the service lacks warmth, it's a solid option for a classic meal in a more relaxed setting than its famous sister restaurant.
