The Good: Taylor's made rights have been around for a long time and I have been there several times to eat in. Do to covid-19 they only offer pick up at the window which they have not done before. This was a great way for the business to adopt to the current situation and serve its customers. I grew up in Marshalltown and Taylor's was always a great place to. It has become a bit pricey but I continue to go there...just not as often. The maid-rites are good, malts are good, great selection of pies for dessert. The staff is friendly. I would recommend Taylor's but, again, it's pricey. read more

Taylor's offers the ever popular loose meat sandwich. So good everytime! The original comes with pickle mustard and onion. But if you must (I wouldn't suggest it). I have ate at Maid-Rite for the better part of 35+ years. My family lived a half a block down the street when I was a kid and we frequently ate here every week. The service is always top notch, food is always fresh and the malts & shakes are so good! My only "issue" is the cheese and ketchup! Neither one belong on a Taylor's Maid-Rite! To start with I have always liked Maid-Rites. I had them as a little kid. As an adult, I lived in the Motherland of Maid-Rites (Muscatine, IA) for over 15 years. I know when they are good and when they are not. I also know that Taylor's lays claim to making the most authentic examples of the original, implying that recipes at various stores allowed the recipe to drift and change, while Taylor's kept the faith. I stopped on my way through while returning to St Louis. It was my chance to experience "the way they are supposed to be". I experienced a true disappointment. I had been drinking soda in the car so decided I would not need anything to drink. Huge mistake. This Maid-Rite was so dry I could barely eat it. Are they somehow trying to pretend this is health food? It had no salt and no moisture, either juice or fat. In fact while I was there, I watched them squeeze all liquid out of the meat in the cooker and return the tasteless, dry meat. For those of you who have Taylor's on your list to try to get a "real" Maid-Rite, save your time. I have had similar experiences at other places, though not this bad. Sometimes the meat is hot but the bun they serve it in is cold..out of the fridge. Lately it seems we're getting less meat and it's almost $5 just for the sandwich. I don't like it when they wipe the counter-leave it wet and then set my spoon in it..gross!. I don't see the workers wearing gloves or washing there hands between dirty dishes and serving food or drinks. Seems a bit unsanitary if your serving to multiple customers. Gloves would be a plus. Some workers seem willy-nilly when they wait on you and you have to ask someone else to ring you up...I never leave a tip..because of those reasons. They don't even try. read more

I have been eating sandwiches at this location since the mid 70's. Their sandwiches are hands down better than the "franchised" locations..i got worried when tornadoes went though town. The sign took a beating but they are still open for business and haven't changed the way they do things. All the way down to the same stools and counter tops. Lol. I get mine with pickles and mustard. I am a traditionalist and stay away from cheese and ketchup. I also order mine moist. There are 3 levels. Dry, moist, and wet..that determines where they pull the loose meat from the cooking basin. Also if you crave them and are away from Iowa. They will ship them to you. Not a cheap deal but worth it. If you have shipped go with them at least moist..they will warm up much better. Don't forget the milk shake while you are there. read more

I find Taylor's Maid-Rite to be one of my favorite places to eat. Some might say it tis too expensive. Well I would tap them on the shoulder and say, "you think there is a price for great quality and great tasting food?" (the obvious answer is no. No you cant) Nice staff and good food, and I LOVE the fact they have added on new shakes/malts to the menu. LOVE THE PEANUT BUTTER SHAKE! I am very happy to recommend Taylor's, without equivocation. Yes, I could be called a"foodie", but if you truly appreciate regional cuisine, then this is a stop to add to your list. Five stars for exceeding my expectations, and for friendly, knowledgeable service, fresh food cooked with care, and a true piece of history, all wrapped in a square of waxed paper. Ask for it "dry" and you could even consider it marginally healthy. It certainly is honest, no additives or fillers, literally cooked right in front of you. Not like the "new" Maidrite franchise shops, which I have only visited twice (shudder....once because I had no choice, and once because I couldn't believe how bad the interstate Maidrite was. I thought I was stuck in a mall food court). I've been to Taylor's enough to know there IS a bathroom, but you gotta know where. I made a point to visit Taylor's Maid Rite in Marshalltown after the recent media uproar over the method they use to produce their loose meat sandwiches. I wanted to make sure that I was able to try the original prep method before they were forced to make any changes. This is a fascinating little place in downtown. It's a time capsule and as I sat there I thought about the generations of people who sat at the very spot I did for Iowa's own invention the tavern/loose meat sandwich. I could just imaging someone like my grandfather stopping here for lunch when he was young and working very hard. This place has tremendous historical and cultural value to the state of Iowa and I was very pleased that I was able to enjoy the atmosphere and very kind service from the employees before any changes were made to the method of making these burgers. The food itself I found to be very plain and what I've expected from other Maid-Rite franchises throughout the state. The milkshake was the best part of my meal. The burgers themselves I found to be somewhat expensive at $3.15 for a cheeseburger. It was a very fascinating and satisfying experience. I would strongly recommend a visit here for it's heritage and very friendly employees. If you're not from Iowa and want to try one of the regional loose-meats you will find no more authentic surroundings than this. read more

While technically a "Maid Rite" this location is not like the other generic Maid Rites around the state thus the reason it goes by Taylor's Maid Rite. The menu is pretty simple: Maid Rite Sandwich, potato chips, shakes, coffee, and soda. Maid Rite sandwiches are served as they have been since the great depression, bun, loose meat, mustard, pickles, and onion, that's it. No ketchup (although I believe recently they added ketchup packets which during my childhood was considered a sin here). So to the guy that was complaining because Taylor's isn't a "Maid Rite", know your history. This place out dates most other Maid Rites by years and because of that they earned the right to play by their rules. Having grown up eating here I find that the franchise "Maid Rites" are worthless compared to Taylor's. read more

What a neat little place! Although I am not a fan of the loose meat Maid Rite sandwich, everyone kept telling me I had to check out Taylor's Maid Rite. I am glad I did. This location has nothing to do with the franchised Maid Rites. The menu was far simpler -- basically, just the original Maid Rite sandwich, sodas and ice cream. The service was great, and the sandwich was fine (just not really my thing). I was even told they do their own meat prep in the basement, so what you have it truly fresh ground beef. It was explained to me that this was the third Maid Rite opened, licensed to the Taylor's in 1928. When the original Maid Rite turned in to a franchise, this location was independent and not part of that deal. In the early 1950s, it moved from the original spot down the road to where it stands today. The interior is very cool and retro, with a three sided counter running around a central serving area. Definitely worth checking out, even if you just stop in for a malt. read more

When we arrived to Marshalltown all the locals said we had to get a Maid-Rite. Well, I just don't get it. I really don't. Maybe because I'm not originally from Iowa or Marshalltown. Made-Rites are a loose meat sandwich. It's basically a sloppy joe without the slop(sauce). I found the sandwich was dry and really lacked any flavor. The sandwich is pretty much the only thing on the menu. It was our first time here and didn't know what to expect. We brought our young son which the seating doesn't accommodate as it is a lunch counter type of seating (which was fine we could get it to go). We looked for menu or a board to see what to order but didn't find one. We were asked what we wanted and explained we didn't know what was available since it was our first time. Well, the lady taking the order said we have made-rites and that's it. We said we will take two and she preceded to ask how we want it. Again not having been there we asked what are our choices? She seemed annoyed but answered. Our food came promptly. Again, the sandwich itself was underwhelming and dry. I wish the service would have been better too. Not a real Maid-Rite. Do not judge other locations by this imposter. Not sure how you can have such poor service for a counter only restaurant that had almost as much staff as patrons. For whatever reason, they wouldn't clean up after people left, until someone else sat down. So, suck it up and have a seat where the last person left part of their meal behind... Good luck getting a drink refill! We had a hard time getting a server to pay enough attention to even ask for them to do it. No fries? I've never been to a Maid-Rite that didn't have them. No seasoning in the meat? The cook said other than salt, no. That is not a Maid-Rite. Use the Maid-Rite app or Loyalty Card? Not here you won't.
