We were in Derry for the night and after researching online for a good place to eat, we settled on…read morethe Custom House Restaurant. We tried to make a booking, however were told booking reservations were full and it would be better to simply show up when we wanted a table but to be prepared to wait. We arrived at 8pm and were told it would be a half hour wait. We settled into the bar and ordered some drinks (Strawberry Vanilla Collins mocktail and the raspberry ripple cocktail were DELICIOUS!). After only waiting for ten minutes we were led to a lovely table upstairs in the restaurant. The menu is vast with plenty of options and the server ran me through all the gluten free options. I ordered the Chorizo Chicken without the chorizo, gluten free and no onions.... naturally the server got a little confused and it still came out with the chorizo, but it was easy enough to push to the side. The chicken was delicious and tender. Others in the group had the duck which was a special of the evening and the salmon both of which were delicious. The side dishes of the garlic potatoes, the potato dauphinoise and the vegetables all accompanied the dishes wonderfully. The service was quite slow and we ended up waiting an hour for our food to come out, though they were extremely busy. We were super hungry by the time the food reached the table but it was worth the wait. The servers did check on us to make sure everything was okay a number of times. The dessert menu was good, a few gluten free options, and we all ended up getting the lemon posset. It was delicious but incredibly sweet and creamy. I couldn't finish it as it was like eating creamy sugar but others polished them down (and then finished mine to boot!) The restaurant had wonderful views of the river and later in the evening there was some wonderful live music in the bar area which we paused to listen to on the way out. I'd certainly recommend the Custom House.

Tried this place on a recent visit to the lovely city of Derry with my wife and have to say it was…read morevery nice indeed. The place has seemingly retained a lot of the original features (ceiling mouldings etc) of when it was a Custom House and this makes for really tasteful surroundings. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed yet still had a nice buzz about it. The service was very good with the waiting staff attentive without being obtrusive or overbearing. The food was very good too, all excellently presented and cooked supremely well. For the record: Starters Soup of the day (wife enjoyed) Salt and chilli squid (lovely but could have done with more chilli for my taste) Mains Spiced Chorizo Chicken (wife thought this was really good) Roast Stuffed Irish Quail (first time I have ever had quail and have got to say it was fantastic) Deserts Too stuffed to follow up with a desert. Wine Passed on the wine. The list could have been more extensive - surprised how often a good St Emillion is missing from a wine list these days. To sum up, a very nice restaurant, lovely decor, nice atmosphere, very good food and pretty reasonably priced considering what I envisage its target to be.

Our lunch in Browns in Town was a feast that probably could have tied us over until the next day…read more The meal was so filling that I felt I would need a wheelbarrow to be led away. But the food we ordered was worth feeling so full because it was wicked good. Located on Strand Road in downtown Derry, outside the City Walls, Browns in Town has a modern interior with brown wood walls in the primary dining area and a little postmodern-styled lounge in the front entrance. The vibes are fairly relaxed where you don't feel you have to dress up outside of jeans and a shirt to enjoy a meal. The food per our experience is certainly that of comfort and quality. One aspect my wife and I loved about Browns in Town, and many of the restaurants we visited in Northern Ireland and the Republic, is that on the menu we know which dishes are celiac friendly or have a celiac option, and note all the allergens present -- e.g., gluten, shellfish, dairy, eggs, nuts, etc. My wife is celiac, so this allowed us to choose this restaurant since it offers many gluten-free options -- and not just salad. Both of us ordered the local seafood chowder (I had the gluten version, while she had the celiac option), which was creamy, buttery, and delicious, loaded with a variety of seafood caught in the area and served with homemade bread. The Mushroom & Black Garlic Risotto was out of this world, with the pine nuts and parmesan providing a nice balance with primary ingredients -- also luscious and rich. The chefs cooked the risotto to perfection. I probably was fine just ordering that, as the black garlic chips (fries to us Americans) were overkill, but I couldn't help myself being at a restaurant for the first time in a city I have never visited before. My wife had the beer-battered cod in the gluten-free option and incredibly tasty, especially when combined with the mushy peas and tartar sauce. We didn't even attempt to order dessert because we were full to the point of being in a food coma. Fortunately, we had a lot of walking around ahead of us, which helped work off our meal a little. But I would absolutely return to enjoy some of the other fares they have on the menu.
