We had walked past it on numerous occasions before realising that there is a restaurant inside the shop. I thought it was just an ice cream kiosk that had a couple of tables and chairs outside for anyone wanting a coffee. The shop is very nicely presented inside; the exterior frontage doesn't do this justice. I think the shop would benefit from a change to the windows/entrance area of the shop - in order to "show" the tourists what the shop is all about. After all, it's a classy little joint! Their card says that they are: "Specialists in coffee, artisan ice-cream, cakes & pastries. All homemade on the premises. Hot & cold snacks to eat in or take away" This isn't a greasy spoon cafe, run of the mill chippy; in fact they don't even do chips. It's a very pleasant restaurant which has a continental feel to it. I enjoyed it here! We visited at lunch time and had a couple of light snacks. Cheese & Tomato omelette, salad & spicy wedges and also a hot beef panini with salad. All of the food was excellent, very fresh and well presented. Good quality food at reasonable prices. Enjoy! Oh, and if you want a beer/lager - then they also serve that!

The drab, tired exterior and bland simple furnishings do nothing to enthuse and warm you to the restaurant. However, the Bengal Lancer is a wolf in sheep's clothing. The Maitre D' and second waiter are very welcoming, friendly, pleasant and attentive to your requests. The food is excellent amongst the best I have tasted; including all the Bradford and Manchester curry houses that I have tried. We started with a couple of fresh poppadoms each, followed by onion bhaji and mixed kebab starters. The service was good, the plates were nice and warm and a dish/plate warmer was placed in the centre of the table. Both starters arrived sizzling on a metal platter and were served at the table excellent. Both starters were of good quality and the restaurant was now beginning to sit favourably with us and transform our original impression. A large pickle (3 dishes) tray and mint yoghurt sauce was presented with the poppadoms and starters this was complimentary and was warmly welcomed fantastic! We didn't have long to wait for our main course Chicken Korma, Garlic Chili Chicken Korai, Pilau Rice and 2 Tandoori Roti's. The Roti's were sublime, probably the best that I have ever sampled. My friend commented that her Korma WAS the best that she has ever had and that the rice was also nicely cooked. My Garlic Chili Chicken arrived steaming hot in its Korai dish and had an exquisite aroma. I waited a couple of minutes for it to cool, before diving in with my Roti curry heaven! The dish was intricately spiced with fresh green chilies and was top class. The chef is worth his weight in gold. As others have mentioned, they do not have an alcohol license. They do however sell a wide range of soft drinks and bottled water. They were quite willing and happy for us to have a jug of ordinary water and didn't charge for this. They are also more than happy for you to bring your own wine/beer/lager to accompany your meal. The Bengal Lancer is a great Indian restaurant and I would strongly suggest that you try it, should you happen to be in the area. We are back off there on Friday, in order to try a couple more of their dishes. I am sure that we will not be disappointed.

But don't be put off just ask the waiter's when ordering you want it hotter or spicier and they will try and help you out. The staff are pleasant and helpful and although there are no other options in the area you could do worse than here. Prices are also good. They don't have a drinks licence but you are welcome to bring your own drinks and there is no corkage charge so it makes a cheap enjoyable evening.

How do I give this a rating? - the content of the "review" is merely information of the fact that there is a "market" and of its operating hours. I'll score it a 3 - maybe the council should build a new proper indoor market for the traders? This current offering has a very amateurish look to it. Better facilities may attract more traders and thus shoppers.

Suggest you get some training done before you give someone food poisoning. Shame because the previous owners did a decent job. They were busy and not very well organised. The main guy seemed to be having to do everything - nice chap, very friendly! We had a doner kebab and a kofta kebab with 2 portions of chips. The meats were cold by the time we got them home - even though it's only 5 mins up the road. One portion of chips is enough for 2 people - we ended up feeding one bag to the seagulls the next day. The salad was nice and fresh. I'd give them a second chance.
