Bao Dao Taiwanese Kitchen - Braised pork over rice - $12

There's a self serve kiosk to order and pay, then you scan a number barcode and sit down. It was all a really simple procedure and I like the concept. Once I sat down and got situated, the food came out almost instantaneously and looked glamorous. All the rice soaked up the juices of the fatty, succulent pieces of pork; and it was absolutely delectable. Never a boring bite!

She pulses and glows, and sends wafts of pungent perfume drifting down the street to envelop me in her heady musk. Finally ate there last night. Was fresh from the gym, cricket training and no lunch, and was so famished I coulda eaten the eyes out of a dead camel. I was barely coherent by this point. I just needed food, tasty food, and a table full of it. Bao Dao delivered. In spades. Big ones. Cheap ones. Hot, steaming, spicy, delicious ones. You order off a big plastic picture menu, there's a ton of small-sized dishes at ridiculous prices - most everything is between $4 and $7, with sides around $3. So you just point at about a thousand things that look good and 5 minutes later you're heffing in like John Goodman at a buffet. I don't like to blow my own horn (unless I'm alone and something with Mandy Moore is on TV), but I ordered the $hit out of that place. Everything that came was epic, from the pulled pork with sweet peanut rolls to the oily lamb broth to the fried coriander chicken to the suuuuper spicy dumplings with pickled cucumber to the pork sauce rice with century egg. Guh. Getting giddy just thinking about it. So go. Try. The Taiwanese girl is waiting. She wants you inside her.

However, at tasting the dumplings and the pancake, tasted exceptionally flavoursome (to my surprise tbh). The service was I guess you could say.... the typical asian restaurant service haha. So I wasn't expecting anything much, so no hard feelings there. Unfortunately, I was feeling quite full that day and couldn't eat too much. So I'll probably come back another day to fully satisfy myself.

Lucky for me, one of my friends had recommended this Taiwanese Dumpling restaurant. Having never ordered here before, the group of friends I was dining with ordered a variety of dishes that included a mix of 20 dumplings, fried vegetable noodles and two other items that were circled in the menu, indicating it was one of the restaurant's specials. These were the shallot pancake and the beef noodle soup, both of which were the favourite items by far I tasted there. The Beef Noodle Soup was very surprising, unlike the Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup, this Taiwanese version had large chunks of beef, that were slow cooked and so tender they melted in your mouth. The soup also had a slight sweet aroma to it, that made it unlike a lot of other noodle soup dishes I've tried before and tasted very delicious. The shallot pancake too was very crispy, had the texture of an oily, flaky, thin pizza bread, although tasted more similar to an indian roti bread with a hint of the onion flavour that the shallots added. This is a good place to visit when you're in a pickle and needing to pick a good restaurant to dine at on Burwood road.

This has now arrived in Sydney on George Street but in a much more glamorous setting than a roadside cart. Given our rules regarding food safety, the ingredients are kept behind a refrigerated glass counter and you order off a sheet of paper. How do Asian countries manage to keep food at ambient temperatures roadside without 'issues' ? Anyhow, the choice of ingredients is quite staggering from meats, vegetables, balls of various fillings, noodles and tofu. The thing to keep in mind is that the bowl isn't very big so you can't load it all up with too much and the big thing to note is that it all adds up very quickly from a $$ perspective. I ended up paying $14.70 (and I don't think I went overboard with my choices either) which is a very expensive bowl of takeout hotpot with noodles. Something similar in Taiwan probably cost me about $3. The browl was very fragnant and as a I had chose mild spicy level, it had a good kick to it. Ingredients are typical hotpot quality but the big bummer for me was the price!

They have a great selection of noodles to choose from which is topped with your choice of ingredients. I was stoked to find out they had the squiggly Nissin noodles plus I was able to add my favourite fish balls and shredded beef, which I frequently order when I'm in Hong Kong or Taiwan. I would definitely categorize it as comfort food.
