I came here for a street fest before Christmas and it was OK. It wasn't as good as it had been before the pandemic. They had a ton of food trucks, which isn't really needed because it's Telegraph Ave in Berkeley, near the college, so they have plenty of food. Also, there were a couple of categories of gifts that were overrepresented - soap makers, clothing, and crystals. Gone were the days when I would go from stand to stand and feel pulled by the newness of all that was sold. But now, it just seemed a bit - meh. I don't know if I would return, because there doesn't seem to be a reason to do so. read more

When I wasn't at work I spent my free time either alone or with friends hanging out in the bookstores, head shops, bars and restaurants on Telegraph Avenue. It's great to walk along day or night. There were some strange high times spent here that I will remember always. One night a guy passed me saying he was going to the Magic Theater. He invited me to join him, naturally I ignored him. Telegraph Avenue is one of the main streets in Berkeley, CA. At the northern terminus of Telegraph, is the U.C. Berkeley campus. In contrast, the southern terminus is near Ogawa Plaza in downtown Oakland. In the middle section, that is, from Ashby Avenue on southwards to the Route 580 overpass, one finds one of the least attractive and most dirty parts of all California. For many students at U.C. Berkeley, Telegraph provides a land-of-enchantment, where finds the legendary Moe's book store, with its facinating collection of books that concern art, photography, history, music, and literature, where the literature includes Julia "the Bubble Lady" Vinograd's poetry books. CUISINE. On Telegraph, one finds intriguing cuisine from many lands, for example, Ethiopia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, India, Vietnam, and Germany. By "German cuisine" I am referring of course to Top Dog, with a selection of sausages that includes bratwurst, bockwurst, kielbasa (Pollish), calabrese (Italian), and hot links (Lousiana). Regarding Ethiopian cuisine, we find Finfine located at 2556 Telegraph Avenue. At this address, we find a charming enclosed courtyard with a dozen restaurants and shops. RIOTS AND PASTORALE ACTIVITIES ON TELEGRAPH. My experiences with Telegraph Avenue began in September 1969, as a student at U.C. My very first record album purchase was from "Discount Price Records" on Telegraph, and the album contained Bela Bartok's Divertimento for Strings. At that time, I did some street photography, and I've posted some of my black'n'white photographs here. The photos include anti-war riots and accompanying mayhem, provided by the courtesy of mindless children wanting to get into the act. My photos also provide more pastorale images of friendly crowds from days when upper Telegraph Avenue was closed to traffic for the afternoon. THE DAY L.B.J. DIED. My photos include a street person holding up a newspaper. He had just stolen a newspaper from the newspaper stand. By coincidence, I had my camera and I snapped his photo. The street person complained that I'd taken his picture, and so I stated that I was only taking a picture of Shakespeare book store across the street on Telegraph Avenue. I was not sure why the street person had taken the newspaper, and I was not sure why he was so happy about the newspaper. However, about 40 years later, when I decided to get this negative scanned (I'd never printed it in my darkroom at home), I realized that the street person was in a happy state because the headlines proclaimed that L.B.J. had died. Eh. I remember hearing about how avant-garde, weird, and, um, Berkeley this street was when I moved to the Bay Area. I've never been a true local - I've lived in San Rafael and Concord - but I've now been here enough to feel like I know this street. It's kinda, well, sorta . . . how do you describe it? I guess it's trying to live up to its past, or a reputation that it has. It has a run-down feel; "funky" doesn't really describe it. Now, I've put in my share of time in Amoeba Records and Cody's Books, and found some real finds in both. I still haven't eaten at Blondie's. But Haight Street in SF has a better feel to it, and Speedway in Venice is off the charts with its weirdness. All three places have their unsavory characters, but only Telegraph Ave. gets a little . . . creepy. Very much NOT a good place for a young woman walking alone. Sure, you can take all this in stride, but for what? Might as well save your time and effort and go somewhere else to hang out. read more

When I went to UC Berkeley I had the misfortune of stumbling onto this little place called Telegraph. This place reminds of me a Super hippy, run-down, version of the 3rd street promenade in Santa Monica but without the charm. I think what the city of Berkeley does is take some of the inhabitants of the T-Loin (Hi Jeena E!) and dropped them onto Telegraph as permanent residents. Shops, stores, Hippies, free stickers and stamps galore. It's not my cup of tea but I guess it's worth checkin out for those one-timers in Berkeley. read more

Telegraph is always bustling with eccentric and eclectic Berkeley activities and peoples. It was even voted "the best place to people watch" by the San Francisco Chronicle. It's filled with some of the best music stores in the country, some great used clothing stores, excellent new and used bookstores and countless restaurants and cafes, some of which double as popular music venues. You'll also find lively street performers and vendors selling tie die clothing, jewelry, pottery, and various other arts and crafts. Telegraph's north end leads directly into UC Berkeley's Sproul Plaza. Telegraph is a must-see neighborhood if you're exploring the treasures of Berkeley and want to catch a glimpse of what gives the city its wonderfully eccentric reputation. read more

I like Telegraph despite it's overratedness. There are lots of cool stores and places to eat on this street, and it leads right onto campus. It's local flavor is very distinct right down to the entitled homeless people. I've never felt so offended at some of the homeless here: Homeless guy: "Hey! Can I have your leftovers?" Me: No...(Because it was take out) Homeless guy: Well fuck YOU!!!!! Me: ...... I remember a particularly lovely day when a homeless guy followed behind me and a friend and ranted about how we were lesbians and such, and then went to a garbage can and started flinging garbage behind his back. Telegraph Ave. definitely has Westwood Blvd beat in terms of personality! There is such much character (and crazy people) here I was never once bored while walking down this street. I got a few pairs of earrings from a local vendor and he was really nice and patient while I picked out my goodies. He overheard me talking to my cousins about how I was getting the earrings as a gift so he threw in a cool little pouch! I wish UCLA had something like this. As an ignorant, naive, straight edge (quiet about it though) little rudey mod punk (I was conflicted).. Telegraph was my first drug. The Berkeley Hat store is a place I have been shopping for almost 20 years. Ameoba... was there opening day. (Okay this is a review... I think it was the first week but doesn't have the impact. I just want to be honest so you trust the veracity of my reviews en toto, but some are like a fish story and over time things shift and get fuzzy. I promise to not lie about anything important... like bacon, or toast.) The music stores were like a dictionary of pop culture... my eyes would memorize album covers and people and genres and I found so many new things that I never thought would be part of my life... worthless lp's, stupid tshirts, bad posters. Thank you for that. It isn't that they are bad, but it might have been my adolescent tastes. This place was surreal... when we could get my skater friend's VW shitbus started, we would come here to spend the day.... then end up at Gilman or Berkeley Square. So wonderful.... As a Berkeley native I have always loved Telegraph. Although some are turned off by the urban vibe, thats part of the reason why I love it... its home. It was the "cool" place to go on middle school half-days, it was the place to go to for insense & CDs back in the day, piercings at Zebra, and moreeee. Lots of memories walking up and down Telegraph. Yea, there are homeless people, and trash on the sidewalk, and sketchy looking vendors...but thats what makes the Bay Area, Berkeley...and Telegraph unique! read more

With apologies to Tsada K., I've never really liked Telegraph. OK, I wasn't terribly familiar with it before 2004, but I think I've seen (and smelled) enough to know what it was like back then, and although it was probably more authentic, I can't say I really would have liked it better. But I'm reviewing it now, and I think most non-Berkeley students would agree that it basically sucks. And it doesn't even suck interestingly. Maybe my problem is that I've walked down Telegraph far more often than I've actually shopped, eaten, had my hair cut, or experienced a 32-year-long acid trip on Telegraph; but I'm always just trying to get to Bancroft so I can cross the street and get to work. If I had my druthers, my office hours would be in a building closer to North Gate so that I could park and/or run to get food north of campus rather than anywhere near Telegraph. read more

Telegraph Avenue has everything: rich history, bustling cafes, unique locally-owned shops, token alt-corporate chain shops (American Apparel, Chipotle, etc...), talented buskers, talentless buskers, unmedicated wanderers, rich vagabond kids with dogs, licensed street vendors, unlicensed street vendors, smoke shops, independent record stores, indescribable book stores, and lots of happy, happy faces. People want to complain about the incessant spare change hustling and the sharp stench of various bodily fluids wafting from the sidewalks, but they're only telling you part of the story. Store owners, street vendors, and local residents all take a lot of abuse from pushy street kids, but Telegraph Avenue is still awesome in spite of its unresolved dysfunction. Litmus test: I bring all my out of town visitors there first and they have a great time. read more

My dad took me to Telegraph when I was a kid and thus my love for trendy, lively streets began. I love the atmosphere of college students, mixed with hippy bums, cute boutiques and awesome smelling restaurants. They have neat street vendors selling the usual jewelry and handmade items. Its a nice place to waste time at which is exactly what I did last weekend. Its also a great place to go if your really hungry, just let your nose do the picking. Parking actually wasnt horrible. Telegraph Avenue was my home for three years. I lived at Telegraph & Durant and then at Telegraph & Haste. I loved Telegraph b/c you never knew what to expect when you'd walk down the street. The vendors selling amber jewelry, the homeless guys holding signs that said "Spare change for pot?", the skateboarders en route to class, running into your old roommate. Plus, I loved many of the restaurants along Telegraph: Naan N Curry, Smart Alec's, Intermezzo, Raleigh's - all great Berkeley eats. Telegraph is an experience. This review is for the TELEGRAPH AVENUE HOLIDAY CRAFTS FAIR: You have to give street artists 10 stars for their creativity, perseverance, stamina and faith in mankind. I admire them all for having the talent to create the beautiful jewelry, artwork, pottery, chimes, toys, mobiles, clothing, paintings, drawings and everything else that is made with such painstaking love and care. There is something very warm and fuzzy (for lack of a better term coming to my head) about meeting the artist who created the items that are on display. All of them greeted us with a smile as we walked by their booths or paused to browse. A friend of ours has her ceramics on display and we try to buy something from her at each craft fair we attend. We'd probably buy something from her even if she weren't a friend because her work is so beautiful. Viva street artists! read more

Oakland ruined a great street with confusing lanes, parking, parklets, forests of white dividers, we don't shop or eat there anymore. Tried going to Marufuku Ramen yesterday but such an unpleasant experience we left. Don't see how businesses that rely on car traffic can accept this. Is it successful for them? Pretty girls inside in the summer, washing nights away with warm drink and thoughts of indecent first times, each time. Outside, cheap frat boys checking their winter watches at 4:20 on the corner of Durant, quickly deciding between the dirty hippie and the dirty narc. The cracks in the sidewalk from Reagan's torrid ass held together by Crumb's spitten gum and the endless repetition of the old crushing the new. May you always shine through the nuclear age. I understand you're going yuppie sometimes, but that's ok. I understand your protests and bums these days are more bearers of me-too angst than meaningful criers of oppression, but that's ok too. Ah...Telegraph Avenue -- a mere shell of what it once was. Where it once was a bustling shithole with many an interesting place to shop, browse, or watch the peoples...now it is just a shithole. Over the past 20 years or so, I've seen the degradation of this area -- and I'm not talking about the University's decision to develop a chunk of People's Park (that was needed just as a form of "hairball removal"). Once upon a time, Telegraph Avenue boasted a minimum of 3 excellent book stores, 2 decent comic book shops, 4 very good music stores (yes, I DO count "$.99 Records"), and a host of other non-chain shops and places to eat. Now we're left with two music stores (yes...Amoeba DOES rock, but that's not the point I'm trying to make), a comic shop (I think there might be a second one hiding around a corner), one LESS bookstore, and an assload of chain shops. As for vestiges of a bygone hippie era, you've pretty much got the dude that sells all the bumper stickers that promote the legalization of pot and reminders to "subvert the dominant paradigm," a bunch of smelly jewelry sellers, Annapurna, and Russ, the dude that's been selling the same Grateful Dead-inspired ceramics since before I learned to masturbate. Where Telegraph has a LOT to offer folks, I still can't seem to get away from the fact that it had -- objectively -- FAR more to offer many years ago. read more

One of the most unique shopping districts in the entire Bay Area. Lots of local small businesses that you just won't find elsewhere. Sure there are homeless people, there are homeless people everywhere nowadays, just look at San Francisco. The street still retains a lot of that special time that was the 70s & before. And much of that is slowly disappearing, catch it while you can. This one's a toughie. It's a strictly love-or-hate street, no in-betweens. If you really, really want to love it and give it five stars, live here for two years; it takes growing into. Bonus points for those who've lived in Santa Cruz or San Francisco. First, what goods can you find here? Food. Gourmets rejoice: there's plenty, PLENTY here to tickle your taste buds endlessly. From Korean to Italian, Japanese to all-out American, down to pizza and sandwiches, you'll have to visit multiple times to try them all, or risk busting your gut eating everything imaginable. Coffee lovers can get their dose of local flavor in Café Mediterranean, Intermezzo and Peet's (hey, it's local). Shopping. Those with a penchant for funky hats can stop by the Hat Shop, or support local vendors by buying handknit hats from a well-stocked stall on the sidewalk. Bear Basics will satisfy T-shirt fanatics with their T-Shirt Orgy section, and Wet Seal rounds out the latest in street fashion. Want novelty jewelry? The sidewalk stalls sell everything from earrings to necklaces, and those wishing to express themselves with body art will find a great henna artist. Now if you're not the type who likes sidewalk vendors who wear tie-dyes and look a little, um, scruffy, you might be quick to note the bad side of Telegraph, like: Filth. My brother can't come here, or anywhere in Berkeley, without repeating how filthy the place is, 50,000 times. Yes, the sidewalks can be littered with trash in some spots, but I expect that anywhere where there's a lot of tourists and generally people from many different locales. Those who complain about the smell of gross bodily fluids - nowhere on Telegraph have I smelled such foulness. I've smelled worse in San Francisco. Transients. I don't have anything against them, but I understand some people do. For the most part, most of the transients that I've come upon are pretty open-minded and won't bother you at all. If you can't give them change, just shake your head and apologize, and most will let it pass. Some even say "have a nice day", and not sarcastically either. Yes, you'll run into the occasional ranter or heckler; I've got my share of catcalls and curses. Yes, they can contribute to the local *ahem* flavor by not showering for many years, but seriously, I've encountered good-natured, well-dressed middle-class people who smell just as bad. Key note: if you just don't like transients, then no, Telegraph won't be your street. But then I suppose the Mission in the City won't be either. Declining local flavor. I can swear there was no Quizno's or Chipotle or Jamba Juice twenty years ago. They're not bad, but slowly more chain shops are opening up on the street, and I fear it will completely lose its local flavor another twenty years from now. The music stores Amoeba and Rasputin are losing customers to digital downloads, with the only appeal being vintage albums, vinyls, and out-of-print CDs. Bookstores like Shakespeare Co. and Moe's are going down slowly, having to go up against online stores like Amazon (Cody's Books closed about a year ago). But change is change. We'll see how it goes... Early-sleeper business hours. Good luck finding a bar open beyond midnight. I frequented this street much too often during my college years, and I must say, it has its local pizazz. Maybe not as much as it used to, but it shouts "Berkeley!" and I hope it still does in years to come. With the occasional music festival in People's Park, street festivals with vendors selling exotic jewelry and accessories, and lively vibe from tourists, students and transients alike, Telegraph Avenue can still make outsiders think of Berkeley as "Berzerkley", and that, I think, is a good thing. read more

On the weekends, I look for a destination for myself and the kids where we can see and do a variety of things within walking distance of wherever I park the car. So far, that has included Palo Alto (University Ave + Stamford), Valencia Street (+ Dolores Park) and now here. We parked, we shopped at fabulous bookstores, we wandered around Cal, and could have spent many more hours there. My kids were fascinated by the "diversity" of humanity along the street, what they were selling, singing, and yelling about. As you get closer to the Bancroft end, you get more conventional retail for the kids at Cal. There's a sandwich shop which gave my kids free drinks, although sadly, I can't remember their name. read more

I do, oh do not want to sound so cliche, but when in Rome.... Granted, I've been a visitor to Berkeley since I was a little girl in pigtails and performing at the annual Jr. Bach Festival. And I remember my family taking a jaunt off of the old UC Berkeley campus and right onto Telegraph for our rewarding $2 slice of Blondie's Pizza. Now, as an adult, most of my time has been spent still wandering on and off Telegraph, into Cafe Intermezzo for their huge and weedy looking salads but I adore their marinated tofu sandwiches. Or off to Blue Nile for tasty fingerfood. I love how the bums here don't bug the hell out of you, like the more citified bums on SF. I've actually had several become militant when I walk right by the stark raving mad bums. I love the small tables set up with fares, especially the sterling silver stuff. Cheaper than the SF vendors and not like the one Asian vendor that was selling beads/sterling rings trying to charge me tax. Ya, right. Loser. I love Berkeley and Telegraph street.........neverending moments of fascination, imagination, and occasional sidesteps of turd deposits. read more

Cody's closing says it all. They had been around forever, yet finally said "this street has just become too disgusting - enough is enough". The one thing I really don't get is why anyone goes here to eat. How does walking down one block of this cesspool, with all the piss and B.O. and rotting trash, not kill your appetite? At least it sometimes has a vibrant atmosphere, particularly on weekdays between classes, but this street is such a lost cause that I avoid taking out-of-town visitors here because I don't want them thinking "thank G*d I don't live in Berkeley like he does". read more

Seriously, no, I cannot spare change for pot OR spare pot for a change. I've seen two kids from my high school panhandling on Telegraph...and I grew up in Marin. These were not po' kids from broken homes who had no choice. These kids were slumming it. One girl was just trying to get to Seattle; I asked her why, and she was like, "Why not, man?...So, can you spare any change?" Girl, please. Go ask your mom for some money. When I lived at Haste and Dana, I went to great lengths (aka just walking on Dana) to avoid using Telegraph as my route to school because it would always make me angry. But then, I also used to get really angry about students trying to hand me fliers for whatever student government meaningless election was going on, so I might have had some rage issues from living in an apartment that got almost no natural light. Fliers are only kind of annoying. Telegraph is allotted one star for being the home of Amoeba and Moe's, the only reasons I ever go over there. And I do find Hari Krishnas entertaining for some reason. read more

Oh Berkeley, How I miss you! Telegraph is one of the many things that make UC Berkeley soooo wonderful. I love the eccentric and funky people that walk these streets. I remember the Jokemon (the man who would tell jokes if you threw him a quarter) and Michael (the sweet homeless man in btwn Telegraph and Bancroft). Every day, I would steal a banana out of the cafeteria to share with him. I remember when I first started school, I was very timid and paranoid about the people on these streets, but now I just love these radical hippy artists. Even the runaway high school drop out --pot heads camped out on the side of the street gave me the comfort I needed away from home. We went here in high school to get rare records and when I was old enough to go here whenever. I did. I've spent so many hours here. Exploring the counter culture. Talking to hobos, punks, hippies, commies, you name it. I hit this place up 2-3 times a week when I was in college. It's the place to be in your early 20s. But now I haven't been to Berkeley for over a year. With music on the internet, books that can be bought on amazon, avoiding collectors realm, etc.. I just have no desire to go here anymore. Maybe I am too old, maybe I am slowly settling in my yupster role, but it's just not as exciting anymore. I don't want to be flirted with, I don't want to be heckled by hobos. Berkeley isn't the same when you're almost 30. It's hard for me to take the people who work on this street(here's looking at you hipsters) seriously. I know I am still young and stuff. But I am not giving you my change or money for weed. I can't even hang out with the whole "revolutionary" crowd. Maybe part of taking care of a home...getting my life in order. Summary based on actually living here instead of just passing through. Tele has its ups and downs. The city had the right general idea, in a way, but the wrong execution, when it tried to spray a plastic coating on the sidewalk years ago so the slime could be washed off more easily. There are better cheap restaurants fairly close by (north of Univ on Shattuck) and you can avoid the jerks more easily, including the out of town predators, by just avoiding the whole scene. read more

I'm bored. It's just getting dirtier and dirtier here. Worse than Haight Street. Sadly reminds me of Pacific Ave in Santa Cruz (ahhh I miss you Santa Cruz), but in the not flattering way.
