Conveniently located. Affordable rates. Stairs and elevator are a bit dirty, but because of the other factors, I'd recommend.

TL;DR - Normally I don't review parking garages, but it was impossible to find street parking on Free Parking Sundays so I had to swallow my pride. We were in Berkeley for about 2 hours and paid $1. The south side of campus, where the student union is located, has street parking if you search hard enough. On sundays, it's free. But if you're like me, and you've circled the block thrice and you even got there early to give yourself enough time to find parking, and you've FINALLY given in... go to this garage. The prices were reasonable. Considering that the paid street parking is about $3.25 an hour, you'll be getting a deal by just a setting yourself up in the garage. I took the stairs down and we found a cool mural. I did take a few IG pics... and it was easy to pay. You have to pay before leaving or risk being that dork that makees everyone wait.

Small sign near pedestrian entrance back into the garage was even ripped so you couldn't clearly see!

The big sign for hours of operation said the garage closed at midnight, but apparently they had amended hours and closed at 11pm, leaving us stranded without a car after our concert at the Greek an hour from home! Check this crappy signage photo. So we had to catch a Lyft home and drive back the next day to pay an overnight fee and get the car!

Very little space between cars, even when both are properly parked between lines!

This place is the bane of my existence... ugh. I seriously resent the fact that anyone can make money simply by being in the position to own a building in downtown Berkeley and hire a buncha lackeys who do nothing other than sit in a box and take your money all day. Hand over fist, it seems. Man, wish I had millions to invest in a parking structure... They've changed management in the last year. Sadly, it was just around the time that I came to realize that some of the goofballs who worked behind the window are actually pretty okay folks. It looks like the whole gang got sacked or shuffled elsewhere. But at least they were replaced by ladies who smile radiantly, even as they're telling you that you have no choice but to fork over the maximum daily fee of $20 for losing your parking ticket, even though it's 9PM on a Tuesday and you just punched in less than two hours ago. Keep a close watch on that ticket! If you're sticking around for more than 2 hours, parking is not very cost efficient unless you get it validated. Fortunately, there are many places that validate, but there are a surprising number of downtown businesses that do not. They get bonus points for implementing the "Early Bird" special. Monday through Friday, go in before 9 AM, get out before 6 PM, and it's $8 flat, no need to validate. Evening $4 flat rate is also helpful. Sometimes this is the only sure-fire parking spot when you're running late... you just have to be willing to pay for it. Some of the spots are ridiculously tight, but as long as you're careful, you'll be all right. If you have any doubt, make sure you get a picture of the car that parked next to you. Or go up another level, and see if you can find a less congested area. This extra bit of caution could very well save your car a few nicks and scratches... if you care about that sort of thing.

    1st hour free. Nice.

Awesome that the first hour is free, but I returned to a gigantic truck squeezed in to what could be argued is less than a compact parking space...next to my car. But the whole garage feels like that- as you ascend, it just seems smaller and smaller. It did to me anyways...

It's a cramped little parking garage, but one free hour is always nice!! Right in the middle of busy Berkeley.

Misleading sign saying "1st hour free". If that's not true after 8 pm, then have it say "...before 8 pm" rather than tricking people.

They changes their rates and I found out the hard way. Don't park for more than 4 hours or you will need a loan to get your car out.

It's not just your ordinary parking structure it's a Berkeley parking structure. It seriously has its own culture within the parking lot. You can feel the hipster vintage vibes seeping through the cement walls, air was very hipster and vintage. It was like being in a different world but in Berkeley. Stepping out of the car I was so confused as I felt I was instantly thrown back into the 70s with all the vintage energy i was receiving from this parking structure. A burst of cold air rushed in and reminding me I was not in the 70s but in Berkeley 2021. It's cold so dress accordingly!!! I never do :( On a serious note, your typical parking structure that leads to like the main road with shops, food and clothes!! I seriously love the architecture of the parking structure. Since I lived in Los Angeles I always dread parking structures ---- they give me nightmares but this wasn't so bad probably because we found parking mega easy! We felt safe, the car was still there and walking distance to main areas. I recommend giving this parking structure a shot :) it's not just an ordinary parking structure it's a BERKELEY parking structure, according to the dude xD

I only saw one payment machine by the pedestrian entrance by the north portion of the garage and had to wait a moment while the person ahead of me paid. The single machine only accepted credit cards. Don't lose your ticket or you'll have to pay the maximum daily payment regardless of time spent. You scan the ticket on the way out to get the gate arm to raise. I didn't see any suspicious people or encounter pools of urine or trash. Whoever runs this garage is doing an adequate job of keeping homeless people out of it. Overall I found it to be just fine getting in and out of the garage on my midweek all-day campus visit. Bottom line I would use this garage again if I had an all-day campus event to attend. I just recently learned that Stadium Parking, which is beneath Maxwell Family Field, is where they suggest that all general visitors park. Really? All the way up here? To visit campus? That's crazy! It's the closest parking to Memorial Stadium, but I'm sure it's ridiculously expensive to park here for football games, if it's not reserved outright for season ticket holders and/or other rich alumni. It's technically the closest parking to the Greek Theatre, which I normally just trudge up the hill from Downtown Berkeley to, but when I brought my dad to the Greek to see Elvis Costello, I knew the hill would be too much for him, so we parked here. Yes, it's expensive, but it's not a ghastly kind of expensive. If you do park here, remember that you're still in Berkeley, even if you are on campus. What I mean is that you shouldn't assume that there's any kind of added security just because it's a paid parking structure way up the hill on a college campus. Thieves be thievin', and they'd like nothing more than to break your car window just to see whether that small bag you left on the backseat contains anything of value whatsoever.

Basically, it's $3/hr until your 4th hour, which is $25. These parking garage levels are quite complex because their names start with a number and then letter (e.g. 4E), which is why I had a hard time looking for my car since I only relied on just the parking level rather than its name. Be careful not to park overnight and then the next day. Some reviewers said that they can't go to their cars since they arrived outside of hours of operation and ended up paying way more most likely because their cars are parked the next day and that parking rates are enforced. I highly advise you to read the signs carefully and leave the garage before this garage closes. Overall, this is a convenient parking garage to go to if you plan to stay for more than 4 hours.

I was with a friend who had trouble climbing stairs so this presented a huge problem. My first review was pretty direct. I called out the City of Berkeley for ADA issues since the elevators were out of service and there was no signage on the elevators. Later, I did reach out to Kevin Phan, Project Manager, City of Berkeley but to be honest his response was a cut and paste job that he had probably sent to hundreds of other concerned Berkeley residents. I was not impressed. Later, Noah Budnick, Senior Management Analyst, City of Berkeley emailed me with a personal apology and a response that was well written and genuine. Noah gets my vote for employee of the month award for his sincere note. Center Street Parking Garage is one of the best garage's I've used in the Bay Area. . (I used to work in the City and know most of the public Garages in Downtown.) It's safe, well lit and reasonably priced if you arrive after 5:00pm. Matt says If you are in Berkeley attending the Freight and Salvage or the Greek Theater this garage is a great option.
