This is Melbourne's Telstra Icon store. It is a massive unmissable building on the corner of Bourke and Swanston street in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. Two levels of technology from mobile phones of all kinds to home phone services, internet and Foxtel. Telstra can provide it all. They're usually efficient - there is a door greeter who will write down what you are after and find the appropriate staff member to help you out. There are also three desks around - the desk on the bottom floor is for general billing enquiries and pre-paid top ups and activations. Upstairs you'll find more phones and more staff with one desk being dedicated to mobile phone repairs and replacements and more billing enquiries. The final desk in the back corner is dedicated to tech-support such as software upgrades and fixing faulty phones. Now we all may not love Telstra, but having been with them for a few years, i needed to upgrade my handset. I came into the 'flag-ship' store on Swanston Street and well... let's just say i left unimpressed. The store itself is quite nice, wood floors, spacious areas and even an upstairs but if only they had the staff to be able to accommodate the customers. The wait time in this store is pretty ridiculous. I was standing infront of the main counter and waited over 25 minutes for someone to come and assist me. After they got to me they told me that i couldn't upgrade to the handset i wanted and was given a selection of three pretty sub-par phones. I walked out of there and walked 50 meters to the Optus shop, got a brand new state of the art handset and a much better data and call cap. See ya later Telstra! read more

For the sake of being useful, I'm going to divide this review into Telstra as a whole, and then this store specifically. Telstra As A Whole: Admittedly, I had just come to Australia, needed a phone and was recommended Telstra so I don't really have any experience with comparing it to other mobile providers in the area. However, I can testify that I have had no problems with Telstra so far. They have pretty pre-paid rates and I've never had a problem with dropping out or slow service so you probably wouldn't need to worry about that. This Store In Particular: Really good! If you want to buy anything from Telstra, you would want to pick this store. I was received by this young Asian male and he helped me pick out my phone (Android) and explained the process to me and was very helpful about it. You could tell that he knew what he was talking about and warned me about which phones could not be un-locked (for international usage) so I could tell he's not that corporate-scamming type of guy. This store itself is very clean, very large, and cool to just drop by and take a look. Overall, no complaints about Telstra! read more

Needed to switch out a sim due to an incorrect size received. It was frustrating to say the least but was forced to ask a couple of team members in the store before they directed me to the tight person, only to be asked a series of questions why I had this SIM and not the correct one (size). Always busy, though rarely a queue, the Telstra shop on Bourke St is actually a relatively nice place to visit, as far as telco giants go. I walked in the day of the iPhone 5S release, having decided an hour earlier that I actually wanted one. Staff were friendly and excitable, and I was in and out (contract signed, handset collected) in under half an hour. I don't know if a telco can be great, but I've never had much to complain about with Telstra. read more

One of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. They are happy to self a service such as a prepaid phone plan and SIM card for an international phone but they have no clue how to revert the phone back to the US phone number. One of the employees simply walked away after saying he didn't know why it didn't work and left me googling the information on my own. It took me talking to three people to finally be told I need to contact Apple. If you are going to sell a product or be in a service industry, you need to understand your product and industry especially if you are working at a tech bar. You also should probably warn customers that inserting a SIM card may change the configuration of their phone that only Apple can undo. Lastly and most importantly, as a baseline customer service standard, if you don't know the answer, at least attempt to help the customer work it out. Don't walk away. read more

On Sunday 16th July 2017, at around 2 p.m., I walked into the Bourke Street store to ask about what post-paid plans they had for a iPad. The woman at the service desk (who claims to be the manager) asked me for my name as she is about to type it into her own iPad. I tell her that I am inquiring for my wife, and it's not for me. "Is your wife here?' "No, I just need to see what plans you have." "I can't do that without a name." "Why do I need to give you my name when it's not even for me? I just want to see what plans you have and pass on the information to her." "Sir, you're being aggressive." (I was perfectly calm and speaking in low voice). "I'm sorry," I said, "but I am actually not aggressive, not shouting at you and speaking at normal volume. You are asking me for my name, and I told you it was not for me but my wife, and all I want is what plans you have." No information. She keeps on arguing with me, after which I said," Can I speak to the manager?" "I am the manager." "I'm sorry, but do you actually have training in costumer service because you are incredibly rude." "I am no rude." "You are arguing with me instead of just providing the information I am asking or explaining why you can't provide me with the information." We debate a little longer. I asked her for her name so I can put a formal complaint. She turns around and walks away from me. I've dealt with Vodafone, the nice people at the Swanson Street Virgin Mobile store, and the Optus store on Chapel Street. All friendly and professional. This so-called manager on Sundays at the Bourke Street store should never be the face of Telstra at the store. Millions of dollars on advertising, customer ready to do business, and we have to deal with rude and incompetent customer service of this nature - and from the Sunday store manager, not one of the service staff. Let's just say for argument sake that I might have been a difficult customer - guess what, Ms Manager at Bourke Street Telstra store? You are supposed to be the PROFESSIONAL. It's your job. Handle customers with care and respect and you'll get the same in return. Give them information when they ask for prices and plans instead of arguing with them about giving away their names. Hello, privacy? If I am not a Telstra customer yet, I don't need to give you my name and contact details. I have no need to be bombarded by telemarketing calls. Just the information I asked would have been fine so I can pass it on to my wife, and she can make an educated decision. Telstra is now off my list for me, my wife, and I will tell everyone I know to not bother. Telstra has one of the highest levels of complaints through the Telecommunication Ombudsman for nothing. Lots of staff like sand flies walking and hovering around asking if you are ok. When it comes to execution, they are only 50-50. Sometimes you get activated and provisioned correctly, sometimes you don't. Some of the consultants there are very helpful but they are unwilling to compensate for mistakes made. For example, my phone was mistakenly deactivated by Telstra one night, no one could explain what happened, including the technical support and retail staff. My sim was deactivated and reactivated on another sim without my approval. I spent a day without having access to my phone and had to spend up to 3 hours on the phone with them until 11pm at night - nothing could be done. I had to waste my lunch hour to go to a retail outlet to do a SIm Swap. They were apologetic but I was not compensated for wasting 3 hours on the phone, an hour of my lunchtime and the fact that I could not use my phone for 1 day. read more
