Although the congregation is small, people here are eager to greet you with open arms and huge welcoming smiles. They also have a small kids program and my kids just love it. After the service there is always coffee and snacks with an awesome view of the sound and islands. On a separate note... I was asked to volunteer and run a cub scout den. I've been a WEBELOS den leader for 2 years now and it for sure has been a huge learning experience for me. We hold our scout meetings, pack meetings, and some events here at the church. There is a theater room for movies, classrooms, a huge kitchen, and a huge meeting room with beautiful views overlooking the sound. Our scout have plenty of room. And, on another note... This is where the Boy Scouts meet as well. Our troop #71 dates back to the early 1900's. I'm excited for my son to cross over this year and begin his adventure with the Boy Scouts here. It has a traditional service at 8:00am, several Sunday schools at 9:30, a slightly more contemporary service at 10:30, a wonderful Childrens and Teen ministry, and is very active in doing things together in and out of the church throughout the week. This church is also very active in sending teams on trips outside of the US for ministry work and has a very active and positive presence in the Lakewood community. I would say this church is oddly blessed with a wide range of ages and life stages of people who attend, a wonderful team of leadership, and a prime example of being greater then the sum of its parts. In short... though no church will be perfect... I have never before experienced a church as healthy as this one.

Their mission statement says: Rejoice, Renew, & Reach Out in the Name of Jesus, and we/they do it well. Mt Cross celebrates it's 50th year in 2008. There are all sorts of celebrations planned. Each and all of the previous pastors have been invited to come and preach here once again. The congregation's reaction so far has been glorious. Not every pastor is a great preacher, but the sermons these previous pastors have delivered have been uniformly stimulating and thought provoking, not to mention poignant. The congregation's president, Roger Knapp, has a clear vision of service to our community. You might know him as a local teacher, and his otherwise demonstrated organization, humor, and wisdom are serving him well in this position, too. Pastor Dave Steffenson is one of those rare people who make people feel at ease immediately. And his sermons are consistently first quality. If a Sunday goes by without him singing parts of a couple songs as illustration, we feel as though we've missed something. His education and depth of knowledge serve him well in our very diverse congregation. Sunday worship services are held at 8:15 and 11:00 AM from September through May, and at 8:15 and 10:00 AM from June through August. Between services there is a fellowship time with refreshments (and stimulating conversation!) provided. Sunday School hour is held for all (from 3 years old through adults) beginning at 9:45 AM from September through May. Last year Dr. Dan Peterson from PLU gave a series of talks for the adults on Lutheran origins and beliefs. He'll be back this fall (2008) for five Sundays beginning September 28th. I know the place will be "sold out" for his presentations. I wish he had been teaching when I attended PLU in the late 60's! Wednesday evenings (Sept thru May) there will be a supper open to all beginning at 5:30 PM. Afterwards there are various activities planned for all. Did you see (or read) the Chronicles of Narnia, the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe? Well, last year for a number of Wednesdays in a row, we had the whole series of Narnia stories summarized and the allusions explained to us. What a great way to spend a couple of hours on a Wednesday evening. Are you looking for a good, interesting, professionally guided preschool with a Christian overview? Noah's Ark Christian Preschool is becoming the talk of the town! The Vacation Bible School this past summer was WELL ATTENDED yet again. And there are many other educational opportunities for all - children as well as adults. Mount Cross partners in ministry with many other local organizations such as the Families Unlimited Network, the Peace Community Center, the Phoenix Housing Network, Habitat for Humanity, and many others. I went through the RCIA classes and now I am Catholic. This is a beautiful church with an even better group inside. Each person is sweet and very understanding to new people. They have a large focus on their community being aware of changes and way to be involved. When I have had "hard" conversations about my views they are very understanding and willing to listen and take the time to open up and teach me scripture to why the faith is the way it is. Honestly best church I've been to.

Until, I continue to express how I needed my kids to be active in the church. My kids were starting to enjoy the church because there are some real genuine members at the church who truly care about you. The members who are genuine have friendly smiles and warm hugs, and their spirit is in the right place. However, until I got physically assaulted by a church employee on April 6,2025, I see how leaders are not practicing what they try to preach to the congregation. They hide their loved ones' and friends' negative behaviors and not address it properly, or their investigations are not thorough to find the truth. The leaders can not be neutral or fair when it comes to their family or friends, who is not following the biblical principles they preach. Like it's different rules for some people. When I got assaulted, from behind, the church employee's relative knocked my 11 yr old daughter into the wall before they ambushed the meeting. My 17 yr old cousin was attacked by the church employee, who is an adult and her daughter. The head elder just sat there, behind the desk, and did nothing but watched, pretending to look down. He claimed he saw nothing, but he was facilitating the meeting. It was told he said it was mutual a fight, but I dont understand how when I was assaulted from the back. I had to defend myself. Did not know if the attackers had a weapon or what. The leaders were protecting the attackers. I believe the head elder was trying to help them escape before the cops came. The leaders have not completed a written statement for me and my family to get justice because they dont want their family and friend go to jail. The elders mistreated me and my family, especially my uncle. They got in his space and his face and had him escorted out of church because he spoke his mind peacefully, not aggressively. He did nothing wrong to deserve the treatment he got. That would have been a good time for elders to witness, but instead, they treated him , me, and my family like we were nothing. One elder could not stand up and stop the mistreatment when asked. We were born and raised in the church. The leaders do not care about people like me. They look at you and judge you. Yes, there are a few good leaders, especially the ones that baptized my kids. But yet, the leaders involved when I got assaulted still have not stood up for what's right. They can't follow their own teachings. I dont know how they get up there and preach when they dont stand up for what's right. How do they sleep at night, when I can't get the image out of my head of the head elder, staying behind the desk. I regret returning back to Mt. Tacoma and having my kids get baptized there. The leaders are hypocrites and liars, even when they stay silent. They dont know how much the assault traumatized my family, especially me and my kids. The elders stood back and watched, and adults attacked a youth, as well. My son dont want to return. My daughter misses church and was happy to be a jr deaconess but is afraid that the attack will happen again. I dont trust no leaders, especially with my kids. They could not protect me and my family, and they choose to not stand up andHdo whats right by telling the truth. How can anyone think being assaulted is ok and not stand up for justice. If the shoes were on their feet and any other leaders' feet, they would want justice. How can they witness to us when they can do whats right. They all stand behind a lie and thinks it's ok. But I know and pray the Lord reveals the truth. I would love the leaders to take a lie detector test to prove the truth. I need and deserve Justice. My kids have suffered at the hands of the church. I would think the church would care about my kids.

The people here are very genuine, nice and friendly, and very helpful, we (United Church of God) had a funeral service here Saturday, Jan.31st, 2015 for a brethren that had past away, and they were very helpful in having the funeral here, and this church has been very helpful when we have our Tacoma Weekend, and they have there members direct people from our church to the school lot, and there church to where ever (not sure) I will be checking out a service here before ours since it works out pretty good and been impressed with the people here
