The orientation is about 30 minutes, after that the fun begins! During the AM shift, I helped load grocery carts filled with food for families and organized a cabinet. I also helped caseworkers with interpreting in Mandarin in person and over the phone. Definitely a great experience and great organization to help. They are truly helping those in need. Free street parking. About a 10 minutes walk from Allen station. Remember to wear sneakers and comfy clothes.

It's incredible how much food they distribute and how many families they help. I see on their social media how they give holiday gifts to children in need, help with back to school supplies and vouchers, dental cleanings, vet clinics, mobile showers and so much more. Many of the people who work here are volunteers, and even the paid staff don't earn much - I know of some who have been past clients wanting to give back. I have seen the faces of gratitude of some of the clients who come here for help. Whenever I come here I have a renewed sense of faith in human kindness and generosity, seeing the impact this organization has and the generosity of so many volunteers and donors, trying to help those who need it most. I'm sad reading the negative review. I also imagine people are quicker to complain on yelp even for free services than to show their appreciation. I also understand it must be truly frustrating for people who are hungry and/or struggling to survive to have patience when things don't go smoothly as life is already so difficult to bear. But I truly believe that the people working at Foothill Unity are doing their best within the constraints or limited resources they have and that they are also dealing with tough and stressful situations all day. I think it is unrealistic to expect a charity that is dependent on volunteers and has limited resources to be a well-oiled machine. In my interactions with those who work there, I believe they are doing the best they can, and I am inspired by all the amazing things they do.

If any of my fellow Yelpers are thinking of getting more involved in your communities & want to do…read moresome good, LA Food Bank is a great place to volunteer. I have volunteered here a few times and I must say I love it! The staff here are very friendly, shout out to Lucy, Carlos, & Jerry! The directions are clear, the workload isn't too excessive & we get breaks in between shifts. LA Food Bank also provides coffee, water, & light snacks. One of the rules while volunteering here that some may have an issue with is that you can't wear headphones/earbuds while on the assembly line, but there's music playing in the background & their selection of music is very good. It's mixed genres which I like a little of all music so this is right up my alley. I love that at the end of a volunteer shift they provide us with the numbers of how many pounds of food we helped sort through, or how many food kits we put together, etc. It's honestly just a good vibe here & it feels good to get involved and help others.

When I sign up with some friends from Heal the Bay as a group, we get to come to this location. There is still some remodeling happening. I think we do great work here as the kits we help make on the 14th is 3,853 kits. We are going back in December. Who wants to join us?
