The Good: -The shul…read moreis beautiful and well-maintained. -There is an active Reform/Conservative congregation and it never fails to make minyan (always full on Shabbat mornings). -The rabbi and cantors are great, thoughtful, skilled, and friendly. -Active event planning for both secular and religious activities. Things like Shabbatinis and Shir Shabbat, but also playdates for kids with the Rabbi and outdoor movie nights for kids. -They have a really nice outdoor garden where people volunteer to farm veggies and fruits. -Members usually get invites to study groups and guest speakers. The Bad: -The congregation is clique-ish and can make gerim and other newcomers feel unwelcome/ignored. -This is not too much of a bad thing, but it is a little difficult to reach using public transit.

When we moved to Salt Lake City just before High Holidays in 2013, our first move was to join the…read moremain synagogue in town, Kol Ami. It was a nice shul, but as nearly-empty-nesters, we had a hard time getting to know the other congregants. So we found Chavurah B'Yachad (CBY), a small, lay-led group that was a lot smaller and friendlier. With no clergy (besides the rabbi who flies in to lead us through Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur) or religious school, it was a very different experience than a traditional synagogue, but it met our needs perfectly. Reconstructionism, if you're not familiar, is an engaging blend of traditional teachings, prayers, and tunes, with a philosophy that encourages social justice and a fresh approach to thinking about ritual and why we are Jews. They have one Shabbat service a month, preceded by a vegetarian potluck dinner (we rent space at Kol Ami), with different activities like discussion groups, community service, holiday parties and Torah study at people's homes. The music will make you feel like you're at summer camp again. I was board president for a couple of years and no one ever complained -- I think that pretty much says it all.

We have been attending this church for nearly a year and absolutely love it. This is not your…read more"typical" church, let alone typical Baptist Church. This church is welcoming and affirming to the LGBTQ+ community. This church is also open to questions and wondering. The congregation has some of the friendliest people I've met and we have potlucks and workshops often. If you have religious trauma or are looking for a church that walks the talk of caring for others, I encourage you to check us out!
