The camp is closing this year. But it was a wonderful experience. The Grandparent's camp was very fun for the adults and kids!

I am posting this review as a parent so that other families can ask informed questions before…read moresending their children to Camp Mohaven. My daughter worked at the camp during the summer of 2026. During that time, I received reports that rodents were being trapped day after day in camp living areas and that more than twenty rodents had reportedly been captured over a period of days. Based on descriptions I received, I believe that many of the rodents appeared to be deer mice. I was concerned enough about the infestation that I personally paid for rodent traps to be purchased and delivered from a local Walmart to assist with the problem. Among the reports that particularly concerned me was an allegation that a counselor awoke during the night to find a mouse on their body while sleeping. I was also informed that rodents were being repeatedly trapped in cabins and residential facilities used by campers and staff. These reports suggest a problem extending beyond the occasional mouse that might be expected in a rural environment. My concern is not that wildlife exists in the woods. Campers expect to encounter nature. My concern is the possibility of ongoing rodent activity in places where children and staff sleep, store belongings, and spend substantial amounts of time. I am also concerned about the potential impact on sanitation and food safety if rodents are present in or near occupied facilities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises avoiding exposure to rodents and their urine and feces. Rodent infestations can be associated with diseases such as leptospirosis, salmonellosis, and, in rare cases, hantavirus exposure linked to deer mice. Rodents can also carry ticks that may contribute to the spread of illnesses such as Lyme disease. I encourage parents to ask Pastor Joe Ottinger and camp leadership specific questions: * How many rodents have been trapped in camp buildings during the past 30 days? * In which cabins, staff housing units, or dining facilities have rodents been found? * Have any campers or staff reported rodents in sleeping quarters, and what actions were taken? * Have rodent droppings, urine, or nests been found in occupied buildings? * Has any food been discarded due to actual or suspected rodent contamination? * Has Knox Public Health been notified or conducted any recent inspection related to the reported rodent activity? * What specific steps have been taken to prevent rodents from entering cabins and other occupied facilities? Parents deserve clear answers so they can make informed decisions about their children's health and safety. Every family can decide for itself what level of risk it is comfortable accepting for its child. Given the rodent activity at Camp Mohaven and the need for ongoing trapping efforts, I believe parents should be provided with complete information about the conditions at camp and the steps being taken to address them. Transparency allows families to make informed decisions based on their own expectations regarding health and safety. When hundreds of children are attending camp throughout the summer, parents deserve clear communication about any significant health and safety concerns.

But what really stood out to me was the overall experience: everything felt intentional, welcoming, and well cared for. The food is a highlight in its own right. You'll find a mix of traditional fare alongside some great local favorites, and it's clear they put thought into making meals both satisfying and enjoyable. On top of that, the staff is incredibly friendly and approachable--they go out of their way to make you feel at home. The camp director, Jon Casbohm, does a fantastic job leading the place, and it shows in both the culture and the quality of the experience. Even the camp store is impressive, stocked with sweatshirts, caps, mugs, and even some heavily discounted gear that's actually worth picking up. There's no shortage of things to do either. From horseback riding and zip lines to paintball and team-building activities, there's something for everyone. The water options are especially fun, with a giant swim area, a pond, and even a pool complete with a lazy river. A majority of the cabins have been renovated and are in great shape, and the house that another reviewer mentioned has also been updated, which really adds to the overall comfort. Skyview Ranch does a great job balancing adventure, relaxation, and quality, making it a place you'll want to come back to.

Don't let them put you on the bottom floor of the ranch house in the winter! The house is old and…read morethey obviously haven't updated the heating system. The upstairs controls the thermostat for downstairs so all you get on the bottom floor is a radiator that malfunctions and turns off in the middle of a 17 degree night. Every room was freezing. This place isn't equipped for all the winter retreats they hold. I can't believe people have gone here more than once. We had a fairly significant injury when a girl's horse ran her right into a low branch and pushed her off. She thought she dislocated her thumb so our youth pastor went to the first aid station to get a wrap. What a disappointing surprise when he found an empty room which looked like someone was squatting in it. Our youth pastor called and texted the guy in charge of the weekend (as requested by said guy in charge) because he thought maybe the retreat center would like to know. It's 3 days later and still no response. Our youth pastor was also seemingly avoided by Guy in Charge. Ok... And the food. Ugh. No vegetarian options unless you want to only eat cooked vegetables and salad all weekend. My husband tried the burger they were offering for lunch but the bun was so stale it was crunchy outside and inside- like a cracker. The pork offered for dinner was full of fat and gristle. 5 hours of free time and no staff around meant kids just had free reign and we the chaperones couldn't keep an eye on them all. All the summer activities on the lake (zip line, swing, trampoline) were out still on a semi-frozen lake. This proved too tempting for a couple 6th graders. Why wasn't that stuff put away. A broken sled on their "snake hill." so they're not currently using that because no snow and broken sled. No one actually made an announcement about this or put up something to keep people away from it. Just a camp full of danger. And as for the God part- the reason we went. Meh. The speaker had to fill an hour so it was just a lot of rambling and it was theologically questionable at best. Why did the camp tell him to fill so much time? 90 minutes of chapel plus 30 minutes of break out sessions with your own youth group for a bunch of teens. Are you kidding? Especially when the speaker has nothing to say. Too long. Anyway. This is getting too long. So TL:DR not impressed. This place will make you sick with how freezing it is and how late they require you to stay awake. Chapel itself didn't end till 10:00 and then evening activities would start. The people running the show were nice and creative but they had no idea what they were doing.
