The Terminus occupies a lonely stretch of Victoria Street in the midst of what I like to call the 'future projects' construction zone in Abbotsford. It's actually a stone's throw from the river and there's a great park just down the end of the street -- though I dare say said construction zone will have ruined that. The pub is a cracker of a building, all green and dilapidated and grimy looking. Inside is a warren of little rooms and spots to rest your weary legs. There's an ace garden area out the back. All the furniture, and the decor in general, is falling apart at the seams and at times I wonder whether the pub may be on its last legs. I popped down for lunch the other day to find it closed in the middle of the arvo, which sent a shock wave through my body. It is the kind of place that will open, or not, depending on extraneous circumstances. The food here is standard pub fodder, the beer is cod and the staff are friendly as hell. But it's the character and one-of-a-kind-ness of this place that keeps me interested. There are fewer and fewer of these un-renovated old girls in Melbourne and very few in this part of town. It's got a long history... I'd be sad to see it go. read more

The newly refurbished Terminus Hotel on Victoria St is "bigger on the inside" and has many areas in which to congregate. There is a front bar sort of dining area with milk bar style booths and larger tables for groups. There is also a garden area for the smoking minority. Then there is a 1st floor area with comfy chairs and couches. This variety of areas contributes to the higher rating, as to the food... We went there for a team lunch and the service was quick, the food good even though a little expensive.I had a pie floater which sat, rather than floated, on a platform of green peas and mash and was a little under heated. One thing to note if you are dining with a group of people is that they don't split bills. Why on earth you would put in a new hospitality point of sale system that doesn't allow split bills is beyond me. It means that the house gets more in tips or something but it suggest that doing the best by the customer is not as important as convenience for the staff. * Steps down off that soap box now* The selection of beers is good and, if you are a fan of Carlton Drought, its very fresh from the tap as they get a feed direct from the brewery. There is also a selection of Victorian craft beers if you want to broaden your tastes. Terminus Hotel is quite odd. At first glance, I saw an incredibly bored bouncer. There was quiet music playing in the background and barely anyone in the joint. My mind immediately jumped to the 1 star review I was going to write later... until I saw the other side of Terminus Hotel. Step outside, you're immediately met with banging music, great people, and fun times to be had. Now, it actually becomes a good thing that the inside is so quiet - you can switch back and forth depending on whether you want to party or sit down and chill out. Terminus Hotel's weird dual-personality seriously threw me off, but I guess it just goes to show that you shouldn't automatically hate a place at first glance. I didn't know this place before the apparent recent refurb but I'm glad I know it now. A nightmare tram journey to get there, thanks to peak hour traffic, paid off when I ordered three house wines and was charged $9 - excuse me? Bargain happy hour prices right there. The vibe was nice. The multi-level beer garden is a delight on a warm night and the staff were friendly. In the aid of 'lining the stomach' we ordered some wedges and cauliflower croquettes for the table. Both were delicious and came out super fast considering how busy it was on a Friday night. I wouldn't come out of my to visit but I had such a great time that I would certainly hit it up again when I'm in the area. read more

This place has changed. Once a great local dive that had great live music and that comfortable but 'dirty' decor. It was cool. It's now a really beautifully renovated bar, with a great beer garden full of self-important hipster excrement. If you were thinking 'the termi is back!' And wanted to check it out - don't. You'll be disappointed and might end up getting hipster germs all over your nice jeans. I wish they would go back to Brunswick where they can pretend to do things, like work. read more

This place has basically become my new local. I had heard some not so great things from friends & was a bit iffy about what I might discover but decided to walk in with a fresh mind & I am super happy I did. I will say, if you are sitting there going " yes the old termi is back up & running" then do not bother because it has changed. The outside and front bar still have that grungy pub feel but that ends there. I was amazed to walk in & explore only to discover bar after bar after bar, I think there is 6 bars in total, um hello! Happy hour on Friday's brings $6 pints of all tap beers between 5 - 7, only half of the second top section is smoking, which is heaven on earth for us none smokers who actually enjoy sitting outside, amazing I know! The staff also walk around advising people as such because the smokers pay absolutely no attention to the rules. The staff were all very helpful, friendly & could crack a good joke. The over all crowd vibe is good & I would reccomend popping in & checking out the reno's one Friday after work. read more

Outside, it still retains some of the 'charm' of the old Terminus, but inside it's a different pub altogether. Well, immediately inside the front door might not strike you as hugely different, but a few more steps in and its clear the focus is in the multi-level beer garden out the back - that's where the people are at. The younger crowd has taken to this place with aplomb since its re-birth, and I can see it being even more popular come summer. We were there for an afternoon drink, and so things were pretty civil, but I can see it getting pretty rowdy into the night. Tap beer selection is pretty minimal and stock-standard, and could do with some sprucing up to make more interesting. Food however was a notch above most pub fare, and came out really fast. I quite liked the dinginess and locals-only charm of Terminus Mark 1, but at least they haven't removed all the character and the changes do inject a bit more life in the old girl. (With all the old Melbourne dingy pubs getting a make-over one by one, you have to wonder where the old barflys have all been pushed onto now, poor old chaps!) read more

Sadly my first visit to The Terminus did nothing for me. Looking like a classic old pub, you walk in to a modern interior, but thankfully not your sterile gastro pub look like too many old to new pubs seem to adopt. There also looks to be an interesting outdoor area, however being one of those classic Melbourne Spring nights (ie single digits and freezing!) we chose to remain indoors. So fit out - tick! We had come for the star of the night - Steak Night (Tuesday and Thursdays). $18 Porterhouse (a miniature version of their normal Porterhouse on the menu) with fries, your choice of sauce and "salad". The salad was a coleslaw type mix that might excite others, but for me, I was really needing some crisp green leaves to counteract a heavy steak and fried potato. Had the coleslaw salad been the only downfall I would have been happy, but sadly, the steak followed suit. I chose mine with the mushroom sauce and colour wise it looked like it was cooked as I asked, however it was so chewy and sinewy there wasn't too much else to taste and the sauce was also rather underwhelming. My hands actually had indents from me gripping the fork and knife so hard to be able to cut through this piece of meat. Having to work so hard for ones meal is not my idea of a fun night, even if the arm workout builds those guns... The service was so so, but not great enough for me to give them any more than one star - an example of which being when our plates were collected, we weren't asked how our meals were (which would have allowed me the opportunity to explain the pile of inedible meat leftover) and were dismissively asked if we wanted dessert from a sniffling waitress. All in all, a rather disappointing meal. I will likely venture back to the Terminus to investigate it's outdoor area and enjoy a drink in the sun when it warms up, but can't see me ordering food again. read more

This place is all about character. It's a mish-mash of decor and the walls and rooms don't seem to match up. The staff are friendly and beer is nice and cold. We go here on Thursdays because they have steak, chips,salad and a pint all for $14. The steak, chips and salad are only $7, but you have to have the pint as well. The only thing I don't know is if there are four of you do you only need to buy one pint. Now let's talk about how delicious the food is. Seriously, I was so skeptical of a $ steak but I have to say it is yum!!!! And it has mushroom gravy on it as well. The salad is fresh and tasty with a nice dressing. Now I feel like a meal there!!!!!!!!!! The only thing I hate is of course when eating outside out the back of the place you have to put up with the smokers. read more

Watch your bar tab carefully. I had crazy amounts of extra drinks added onto my bar tab and the cost was double what I had over the night. Shady as! They should call this bar 'Shady Buttheads'. Decor was nice, but I'm also pretty certain the went above capactiy. There was a line to get upstairs, and when you finally got to the end of the line, they took my phone number in order to let me know when I could go up. All just smells like greed to me. read more

I now understand the meaning of the word serendipity. I had typed 'The Terminus Hotel' into Google Maps and instead of taking me to the one in Clifton Hill, it took me to this pub. I never knew that there was a Terminus Hotel on Victoria Road, so not only did I put it onto my to do list, but pretty much bumped it up to the top (namely because I thought I had already had a beer at each of the pubs on Victoria Road). I suspect the reason that I didn't know about it was because it was being renovated, and I must say they have done an awesome job. My favourite part was the beer garden - it had two levels. Then again all of my favourite pubs have awesome beer gardens. Okay, it was a little crowded, but not so crowded as to make it nigh impossible to find a seat (or move about, as I experienced when I was in London). Mind you, that was probably because I was there on a Thursday night. This is one pub that I definitely want to return to, simply so I can have a meal. read more

Will and Tom were absolute legends, best service I've ever had and knew an extensive amount about alcohol and food pairing.

They have great beer on tap. The burgers are good, but not amazing. There were tons of kids here on the two Friday nights I visited (six months apart) and considering the fact that I spend five days a week with children, I have to say I wasn't really in the mood to drink my beer in a converted child care center. People, Friday night is for Ms. D to get blotto, not to trip over a five year old building blocks on the floor. I get paid to deal with that shit in the afternoon, and it's night time now, kay? What a crazy surprise! On the outside this pub looks like it's falling apart- inside is a gorgeous space with lots of plants and a great vibe. We ordered the charcuterie board, cheese encrusted cauliflower and bread and dips. The food was amazing- the cauliflower disappeared first! Service was good, drinks were great and they have Carlton beer delivered fresh from the brewery which apparently tastes better- I'm not really a beer girl so didn't try it. This is not what I would call a gastro pub. It's certainly not refined enough to be called as such. Really quite disappointing. The food was good. No complaints there but it was the service that let it down. Staff just didn't care and were not attentive. At times they were rude and snooty. Once we were seated it took around 20 mins before they wanted to take our food order and they hadn't asked for a drinks order. We continually had to keep asking for more drinks even though it was clear bottles and glasses were empty. Lost profits. Wouldn't care if I never went back. read more

This pub is close to our work and the Quest where we put many of our overseas suppliers so it is an easy fit to take them there for dinner. Unfortunately only about 20% of the times we have eaten there has the food been barely edible. The atmosphere and decor is great but the food is terrible in general and tonight I reached an all time low when I risked having their "Reuben" thinking wrongly that it was hardly possible to stuff up such a simple iconic dish.... It had a weird turkish type of bun and a hint of fatty silverside with a few strands of cabbage and sweet gherkin type stuff with some sort of plastic cheese to glue the bits together. Frankly this was bad enough that even after a tiring day and being in a position where we wanted to "entertain" a supplier from Korea in a location close to our office, I have to document how disappointing it was. Given the competition in the Richmond and Abbotsford area, I don't know how they can get away for so long with such awful food. Good looks and charm will only get you so far! read more
