I've shopped here before and have even purchased a large rattan sailboat from your store, so I was genuinely surprised by how I was treated during this visit. I was shopping with my husband and his parents while carrying my own woven pineapple basket that I purchased in Mexico. Before long, I noticed an employee lingering around me. Then another employee approached and asked if I'd like them to take my bag to the front while I continued shopping, apparently assuming it was something I'd picked up in the store. I explained that it was my personal bag and, because I already felt like I was being watched, I even offered to open it so she could see for herself. She quickly changed course and complimented the bag, but by then I already felt embarrassed. Later, while waiting upstairs for my family, another employee came upstairs and appeared to be keeping an eye on me again. Whether that was the intention or not, it left me feeling uncomfortable for the rest of my visit. Ironically, I wasn't exactly surrounded by priceless antiques. Much of the merchandise resembles what you'd find in a thrift store, just with significantly higher price tags. Yet I was made to feel as though I was attempting to walk out with something. I understand that stores need to be mindful of theft, but making assumptions about customers isn't good customer service. I came in to browse and hopefully buy something. Instead, I left feeling embarrassed, unwelcome, and like I had to prove I wasn't stealing. That's not an experience I'll be repeating. read more

I LOVE this antique store. I went twice in the last month, about two weeks apart and they already had different things. Some of the booths were familiar but it appears they change out pretty regularly or the sellers update their booths frequently. I purchased several Christmas and birthday gifts from here (vintage cherub boxes, a Chinese waist tag, earrings, necklace, brass work I turned into an ornament, etc.) and everyone who received one of the items I found was ecstatic. Highly recommend if you're looking to shop for a loved one or maybe need that special treasure for your home. The staff are very nice and helpful. Probably one of my favorite antique shops in all of Charleston! Definitely make sure to stop in if you're passing by on James Island. Absolutely due to their vast variety and amount of items they carry. Almost every visit is an exploration of time periods, styles, and mystique. A true treasure hunt! You can find everything from classic silverware to German Linens, pottery, glassware, smalls, and Jewelry. I believe individual booths offer some sales throughout the year with a revolving selection of freshly pick vintage and antique items. Make sure stop in often as their inventory is always changing. The best place to go after visiting Charleston to get a real antique souvenir. It is HUGE. The staff was so fun and nice too. You could tell they loved being "at work". North Charleston also has some prime little food spots nearby. This is def the up and coming part of their hood. Really loved our visit here and spent a couple hours looking through the place. A decent antiques and what-not shop. The building is larger than it appears, and part of it was being worked on (I think it was lighting upgrades.) Parking is easy, getting out of parking is a challenge (spots are close to the street, you back out into traffic.) Great variety of antiques and collectables. You can spend several hours here at a slow pace or rush through in 90-120 minutes. As a shotgun antiquer just following my wife around, I found enough to capture my interest. Would stop in again, and might buy more if I were not hundreds of miles from home. read more

I was so excited to have a day off and visit as I usually work during business hours. First off. This place is larger than it appears from the outside. Parking can be tricky to maneuver when you're leaving your spot. Be careful. LOTS of silver items, if you are into that. There are also non antique items sprinkled throughout the store. Despite having a love of antiques, and a wide variety. I left empty handed. This place is soooo overpriced. I saw a side table priced at $30,000. Yes, THIRTY THOUSAND BONES. It was gorgeous but there's no way a middle class person like myself could afford that. Really disappointed with the prices. read more

First a disclaimer. The owner is the assistant musical director at Bethel United Methodist Church here in Charleston. Her mother, who is in the choir there, taught me Sunday school a few years ago. With that background, you would think that I would give a glowing review. Yes, you are absolutely right! I think a lot of this place but it is not because I know the owner. If you're going to go into this place you will need to spend at least an hour to thoroughly look through every one of the various vendors' booths and spaces to find just that exact thing that you were wanting. When I moved into my new house there were a couple of things which I needed and so off I went and spent a dollar or two before I was over with my spending and shopping. Whether you are looking for something from the 1920s or 1930s or something even more remote and more antique this is the place to find it. Whether it is bric-a-brac, tchotchkes or anything else of value and of uniqueness, here is the place for you to wander around and find exactly what you were looking for. Perhaps I set myself up for it, with all the enthusiasm and optimism in ushering in the juicy, ripe possibility of 2010, or my own delusions in matters of the dark side of the human spirit, but my optimism and hope for a beautiful tomorrow suffered a crushing blow on a worn bench in this shop in early January. Amidst the columns and rows of antiques, tchotchkes, and memorabilia, I came across a heavy metal ring that was sculptural and aesthetically intriguing Its intended purpose wasn't readily apparent, but as a metal, sculptural *thing*, it looked kind of cool. I traced its edges with my finger while calling my beau over to check it out. We're partial to industrial, found object type décor and are always on the lookout for unusual pieces to introduce into our space. I tried to pick it up. It was surprisingly heavy and required both hands. Even still, I could barely lift it. And that's when I saw it: "Slave collar. $300." I recoiled, horrified at unwittingly handling it. I had an instant vision of a man wearing it under the hot sun and tears welled in my eyes, burning hotter than fire. I couldn't even bring myself to say something to the very nice women* working the store. And I regret it. My reaction was so visceral, I lost the opportunity to learn, maybe even to teach. Even more distressing to my internal dialogue: "who would buy it?" I don't believe in sanitizing history or whitewashing painful legacies. There is historical and educational value in maintaining some of these relics. That's why we have museums. Call me a raving Yankee, but I'm suspicious of collectors of Jim Crow memorabilia. I've always known I'm probably going to encounter the ubiquitous "Mammy" and "Sambo" figurines when I enter any antique or thrift shop, especially in the American South. I've learned to steel myself for that, for the casual racism of the idiots I encounter on a regular basis since moving here. But there's just no steeling yourself for a torture device. I can conceive of no circumstances, no "background story," no justification for its presence in my hands. Sometimes, I still think back to how heavy that thing was. And it makes me want to napalm this planet. I feel relatively comfortable in stating that the owners of this shop would probably think twice before putting out "collectibles" from the Holocaust. Maybe I'm wrong on this front. Maybe they'd be ignorant enough to do that, too. But the fact that they didn't consider how horrifying and painful the history and symbolism of that item is to anyone possessed of a cortex and a history book is not only heartbreaking, but downright appalling. Thanks for the abrupt and unwanted refresher course in Oppressors 101. * I am not making any assertions about the women who were working there that day. I don't know if they were the owners or not. They were nothing but friendly and helpful. Perhaps they don't know about the collar. Perhaps they do. Again, I don't know. Expensive things. I am hunting for a domino set and they did have a few old games, but not this one. The sales lady helped me look briefly until she figured out that they did not have one where she thought they might, and then disappeared to help someone else that was probably more likely to buy something. Helpful enough, and nice enough. I did not really dig the lay out of the old house as some rooms were hard to move around with more than one person in them. For an antique mall of this size, it is incredible well organized. The management has really tried to make every portion of the space 'make sense' and adhere to a theme. It doesn't smell like your typical antique store either - if that kind of thing bothers you! As with any multi-dealer space, it is hard to negotiate on price as the staffers need to connect each person individually which can take a long time, especially when you're in front of an item you eagerly want to take home. I was out for a drive on my way home, taking the scenic route down Maybank Hwy, when what do I see on my left but a huge antique shop calling my name. Without causing an accident, I skidded to a stop and pulled in to the parking lot. After checking in on Yelp (you never know where you'll get a deal or coupon) I went in and began my browsing. They're not joking when they say that this is a mall. With over 60 dealers utilizing this building, they have display cases and rooms all over the place, including upstairs! Owners and staff were very friendly, and I walked around probably for a good hour before deciding on my one take-home find of the day. This can be very dangerous for the non-disciplined as there is so much to choose from. The booth that I purchased from is unfortunately closing at the end of the month because the dealers are retiring at the ripe age of 85. Until then, all items in this booth are 40% off, which includes some very classic and notable books. I'll definitely be back with my wife to browse around. read more

Visited the Terrace Oaks Antique Mall in July, 2011. Was greeted warmly at the door by the nicest ladies who offered us cookies and lemonade! Purchased an art deco ring and English toast rack. Wonderful quality antiques which are very reasonably priced. Plan to spend a lot of time browsing, because there is so much to see! Fantastic finds for lighting, furniture, decorative items. We recently moved into our new home and the previous owners had taken all of the ceiling lights with them. Everything we looked at online (for DAYS) looked too new, cheaply made, or modern. One quick visit to Terrace Oaks and we found three beautiful antique chandeliers at about 2/3 the cost of new. Everyone who visits our home compliments the lights and asks if they were always here. We also found a beautiful framed mirror for our powder room for only $65.
