MICA - Maryland Institute College of Art is a strong arts college that is often beneath the radar…read morefor many locals. But they have a strong multi-building enclave only a stone's throw from Pennsylvania Station, Baltimore. The MICA store is for the art students. Although stores like Utrecht carry some items, the MICA store has some unique items. The poster art for instance sold at the store features designs from the Globe Poster business which MICA purchased in 2010 when the Globe went out of business. In the pre-social media days when flyers advertised music acts, The Globe Press had clients like Tina Turner, James Grown, The Temptations, etc. who would call in orders. Some of that poster art lives on at the MICA Store. The store also carries some cool books and gifts that I have not seen at a Utrecht's. And of course, like any university, the MICA Store sells cool t-shirts, sweatshirts, stickers, and bags with Maryland Institute College of Art's distinct logo. Definitely an interesting stop for anyone with an interest in art or design.

But I loved the idea of taking the painting somewhere in the neighborhood to be framed. When I walked in, I knew I'd made the right decision. The customer service was incredible - they really walked us through options, pricing, and other details. They explained it might take them a while to get to the project and offered to let us keep the painting at home for a while until they could work on the frame. We ended up going with something modern, minimalist, and simple, because the painting is busy enough on its own, but they have a really incredible selection of frames to choose from. From modern to traditional, simple to ornate - they have it all. While we made arrangements for the framing (measuring, quote, etc.), I wandered around the shop, which is also a gallery. It has some really incredible art. It's worth stopping into as a gallery as much as a framing store, especially if you have some bare walls at home. They called when our piece was ready, and I couldn't wait to pick it up. Just as promised - it's perfect. I thought the price was extremely fair and reasonable (honestly, I think I'd have paid even more at that chain big box store - you know the one). When I have things to frame in the future, I won't hesitate to take it to Fleckenstein. A great local business.

Terrie is a professional at the highest level of performance, care and attention, and her work is museum quality for serious collectors. These are the scents you'll be choosing from in the class. The candles are made upstairs. You'll see a sign directing you up there, OR somebody will come down and ask you to wait until some people leave. They book back to back, so people are always coming and going. The two employees stayed busy the whole time we were there. I gotta give them props! It's BYOB so make sure you bring something to sip on while you're making candles. They do provide glasses or you can bring your own. Once upstairs you'll choose your vessel (which style of candle do you want to make). Then you'll choose your scent. They had fall scents when we went. You can mix two scents, but they explain the pros and cons of that. AND you can choose your ratio. Then, you can choose a color if you'd like. I won't go into everything because they'll walk you through it. It's pretty straight up. It was a fun experience. You can even title your candle. They'll provide a label and colored pencils. You can place the label on the side or top. Pretty cool. Lastly, you'll have to come back a minimum of 24-hours later. It needs to set. I've had mine home and got around to burning it. I was hoping the scent would be stronger (or that I could at least smell it). Perhaps my mix settled or something. I'll update this review if I find the scent stronger as I burn it. That's the main thing I search for in a candle; one that burns as strong as it smells. Still, it was something different to do.
