Amazing fragrance making class! We walked in knowing nothing and walked out feeling like part time perfumers with full-time egos. The instructor/owner was fantastic! She was friendly, very patient and extremely knowledgeable and we really appreciated her feedback and advice. The space was clean, open, filled with light and the vibe was comfortable. This studio was very personalized and tucked away into downtown Catonsville (a city west of Baltimore, Maryland). My fiancee and I went for date night, and we were so excited to try our hands into perfume/cologne making. We signed up for the course, and went up to this studio to find out how to make our own signature scent. With scaffolded instructions , a patient host/instructor, and a relaxing vibe to help with "lab work", the night was spent well. The class was easy to find on Eventbrite, and this establishment also hosts other forms of art parties and DIY courses. I took the perfume and cologne making class at M.I.Y. The founder and instructor, O'Laura, was very kind and patient. Everyone had their own apron to wear and got to choose which oils to incorporate into our perfume. O'Laura did an excellent job giving us a brief synopsis on the history of perfumes, but also broke down the 3 layers of scents. The top notes are usually lighter and floral. The middle notes are the "heart" of the scent and tend to be fruitier. And the base notes are the musky, earthy, woody notes that tend to linger in the room after the perfume is sprayed. This really helped me in choosing which oils to include in my perfume. She walked us through balancing the amount of oils to add. In the end, she did play a game with our table of 12 people or so, which I ended up winning and getting a coupon to use at M.I.Y, as well as a heart-shaped pen. M.I.Y also offers a candle making class, which you can walk in for and do not need an appointment in advance. They also sell other products, such as reed diffusers, candles, wax melts, room sprays, and more. The hostess shared the history behind their work, making the experience feel even more special. Our workshop was hosted by one of the owners, who was warm, knowledgeable, and engaging. This is a beautiful black-owned craft-making studio that offers a wide variety of fun and creative classes such as sip and paint, candle making, room spray crafting, body butter making, crochet, and more. The co-owner of the studio hosted the perfume-making class, and she was absolutely amazing. Not only was she warm and welcoming, but she also took the time to share history about the materials we were using and the origins of body perfumes. It really added a special touch to the experience! One is for anyone to come and the other is geared towards couples where they offer charcuterie and play R&B music to set the scene. So you can choose to come here with a friend or your boo. I came here with a group of church friends and we had a blast here! Our girl was super helpful when it came to the blending scents which was the hardest part believe it or not! But ask in all we had a blast creating our candles. We were offered refreshments and pretzels which was a great addition to the activity. I definitely will be back to do some perfume making!! I had a blast making candles! This place is truly a gem. The vibes were high, the instruction was great, and the hospitality was on point. My BFF and I were joined together with a married couple throughout the candle making process. Our host O'Laura was funny, engaging, and a pleasure to work with. There are so many selections to scent your candle as well as to color your candle. Everything was included in the price. We were also offered a drink and a small snack during this process. While waiting for our candles to cool down we engaged in some trivia and word scramble games. I even won a prize! It was a great time. I would do this again with family/friends or even solo. The space is super cute with murals on the wall by a local artist. In addition to candle making you can make your own body butter, perfume, lotions, and they even have karaoke events! My initial impression of this business was welcoming, the person giving the class stated she didn't expect the large turn out and it became apparent as the class progressed as it began to feel rushed. Furthermore it made me feel like i was back in Ms Green's 9th grade art class after I was berated for ''not paying attention". As far as the perfume there weren't many to choose from given the size of the class and the amount of alcohol added made the sillage nonexistent. She was friendly, helpful, informative & we learned a lot of interesting facts. They provide wine and snacks. Class went at a good pace, easy to follow along, got to pick top, mid, & bass note fragrances to add to our candles & then got to choose a color for the candle as well. While we waited for our candles to harden (takes about 1 hr 10 mins) we played a game & were given some convo starters, which was thoughtful of them. I have been looking for some summer fun activities for my 6 year old daughter. I recently booked a candle making class with M.I.Y. Candle, and she absolutely loved it! M.I.Y. Candle Co. is brand new to Catonsville. The shop itself is conveniently located, and so cute! I was able to drop her off, which was great because I had almost 2 hours free to run a few errands. My daughter was so thrilled to pick out the colors and scents for her own custom candle. She had so much fun with the whole process! Snacks, games, and activities were provided during down time while the candle cured. The staff was super friendly and patient, making sure she had a great experience. When she came home with her finished candle, I was actually really impressed - it smells wonderful and looks beautiful! She even named it :) This is such a fantastic activity for kids, birthday parties, etc., I highly recommend it to other parents. It's also perfect for adults who enjoy a bit of crafty fun. I'll be back with some friends to make my own! There's also a custom perfume option and art classes/workshops. We'll definitely be coming back for more adventures! read more
