The cheeses and cured meats are half the price and often much nicer than those sold in Irish supermarkets, as they are imported from the continent where they know a thing or two more than us Irish about such things. The chocolate is great (rich, creamy and cheap) and they sell a mean bag of "luxury" muesli which is packed with nuts and fruit unlike the flaky bokes of oats with the odd wizened raisin that you pay a fortune for elsewhere. Beer is cheap and reasonably good, there's a few nice bottles of wine to be found if you can get a recommendation from someone in the know (I've had some terrible plonk from here too), but the spirits should be avoided at all costs. Do not take this warning lightly! This Lidl is big and has an underground carpark.

The shop is also conveniently located just around the corner from both O'Connell Street and Dorset Street so it's very central. Under Irish consumer pricing regulations, the selling price of goods offered to consumers must be clearly displayed on or near the product. I asked a female member of staff how much the seeds cost. Instead of simply answering my question, she told me, in a very patronising and dismissive tone, "Go to the checkout, they will tell you there." Not even a "please" or any attempt to be helpful. This is not just about one interaction, it is the consistently rude and arrogant attitude of the staff. Basic politeness costs nothing. The cakes here so scrumptious and so handy for getting a reasonably priced cake iced with a personal message. I also love their pastries, for something that is produced "en masse" they are tasty. Unfortunately, I think the golden years of Superquinn under the regin of Fergal Quinn are long gone, I loved their bonus points and the general atmosphere in the shop of 10 years ago. Alas, the customer is no longer treated regally here but they do stock a wide range of goods and although generally thought of as much more expensive than other stores, I haven't necessarily found this to be the case.

The bread, the food, the alcohol, the toys, etc. how much cheaper everything was! I was in there for about an hour and could not believe that here in America we spend so much more on food than what is really needed. The convenience of having so many grocery stores everywhere was also great. What was interesting is that you walk through a barrier with a security guard do your shopping, and then you go to an automated checkout. To walk out of the barrier you have to scan your receipt. It's pretty convenient and I see now here in America Safeway specially in some areas they have come to the same exact process. Well, I walked in there to get coffee, I ended up getting a baguette cheese, meat, cream, cream cheese, coffee, smoked salmon, and a few other items and let me tell you it was delicious. The workers there are not that friendly, and if you want to buy alcohol, you have to do it at 10:30 AM. The store was very clean compared to some stores here in America and there was a lot to choose from.

The grab-and-go food was pretty well picked over this afternoon but I found a sandwich triangle as well as some candies (some of which might survive the journey and go into my suitcase home) and a very inexpensive bottle of sparkling water.
